dothan is not a bad town very low crime rate and a good place to raise a family i think. i am from indiana but, i have two daughters that live in dothan with their mother. dothan to me is a whole lot safer than where i am at now. i live in canton ohio now and i hate this place. high crime everywhere and no jobs at all. i lived in dothan before and i was about to get hired on at twitchell i was through personel resources making good money. i regret that i left dothan.
I still have family there and I visit from time to time but can't stay no longer than a week or two... Dothan has changed a whole lot and I feel like a stranger when I visit... Dothan was a big part of my life but I would not move back there to live... I've had a great opportunity to see so much of this world thank god... so if you live in Dothan please find a way to get out, and explore this fascinating world we have I promise you want regret it....
Thanks your video was really interesting... I was born and raised in Dothan, AL I moved away from there in 98 for good... It was mostly a black and white city while I was living there, the people were some what nice... But to me there weren't really bad areas In Dothan... I grew up on the Meharis Circle next to Carver Middle School, I had a great childhood and wonderful neighbors and friends that really cared about you... but of course it was the 70's 80's and 90's... @Scumbrkingrat83 Yeah, you and Mocabean are both correct. Dothan definitely sucks ass. I have lived here off and on for the last 32 years. I was a 12 year old Yankee girl from Vermont when my mother moved here(along with the rest of the family)(cos Vt was 2 expensive), AND THESE PEOPLE HATED ME just for being from Vt. and because I had no experience with racism-had only laid eyes on 2 Black people in real life IN MY WHOLE LIFE in Vt....so I got my ass beat on a daily basis.
@Scumbrkingrat83 When I said you don't get out much, I was not implying that Dothan does not suck ass (because indeed it does) I meant I know of worse places but I definitely WOULD NOT have moved here if I had know then what I know now. :)
1:12 is like the most racist shit i done seen dawg. got black folk workin in da field like they happy bout dat shit or something... but that shit ain't like dat no more. dare them bitches to try dat shit now tho.its Dopetown 334 now bitch
@patriotgirl65 us people burning crosses? just going to lump me in with an old southern stereotype? we have a word for that, I think it's called racism. you are victims of your own ignorance
@LowTegra Um, NO, I am not a racist. And it's not my fault that the "old southern stereotype" is TRUE. My family moved me here almost 32 years ago and I was beaten almost everyday of the first 3 years I was here because #1 I was a damn yankee, #2 I didn't have a problem with an entire race of people of whom I had only laid eyes on 2 "in real life" previous to moving here...and THREE because I would NOT use the N word.
This town has always been a KKK strong hold. Everyone knows it.
@czabodeborba My first husband is a local yocal musician here in Dothan...his band's name is "Beer Money"...Back then he was playing with a band called "Almost Country"...Did you ever run into any of those guys? Drifters used to be great...all the musicians in town used to party there after they got done for the night, and we all used to really have fun there...Now there is a "bikini bar" in the back and the place has gone right straight to puking hell. Nasty little hole now.
I'm a California girl and have never had the opportunity to go to Alabama. This was a great video. I love to see past photos and postcards from different areas and learn the local history of them. I do plan to one day go to the rocket and space center in Huntsville. Or so I hope to :)
@ToriSterling Sweetheart, take it from someone who knows...you don't wanna come here. These people here don't like anyone who is not "frum heah", especially those from California and Vermont(where I'm from), and those that are not racist homophobic bigots.
Huntsville area is nice, but only because of the high population of military and NASA people, otherwise, it would be just as bad as the southeast of the state.
Dothan has certainly changed for the worst. It is culture-less with only franchised restuarants, the town is 3/4 slums (commercial & residental), the cost of living is high, without the jobs to support it. I think that Dothan is in a condition that will be difficult to repair without corporations.I wish more effort was put on industry than on Dwtwn re-development. At what point do you stop adding stores & restuarants and start adding people that can afford to support leisurely spending !
Was one of those buildings Moody Hospital? I think I saw Frazier-Ellis, where I was born in 1945 (and later revisited on its closing day). Those shots sure brought back some old memories!
Enjoyed this so much. Put me in a time capsule and send me back to old Dothan. I like it better than the current one. (I confess to being old fashioned!)
Obviously you are on to something. Visit the library of Dothan. There are volumes of pictures of Dothan ranging from the late 1800's to the mid 1950's.
I would market this video Dude, you could make some bucks doing this. You could sell the video to the movie theaters, Alabama Welcome Center, Wiregrass Museum of Art, Landmark Park, the Library, I could go on and on but I'll stop now.
I adore this. I sent it to my grand parents and mom. Thanks for gathering all the pictures of the old places around town. My favorite place of all is the Opera House.
good place to raise a family.

@dhall51 Being a dope town is just as much slavery for the people of your community as was all out slavery.
Until you young Black men get some pride in yourselves and stop killing each other OVER DRUGS, YOU WILL ALWAYS BE SLAVES.
You keep on usin' THAT WORD, like you own it....WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO OWN IT? Don't you realize the sheet wearers are still laughing at you?
GOD DAMMIT GET SOME PRIDE IN YOURSELVES.
STOP KILLING EACH OTHER AND ABANDONING YOUR CHILDREN.
BLACK PRIDE DAMMIT!!!
