Brilliant!.....this is the first time I've ever hear him play, and he certainly leaves nothing else to be desired!.. he's right up there with all of the very best!...
wow!! love that playing!. i am 35, i love jazz.. i feel alone, all the peole i kno did not like jazz and i just dont kno why?? i work very hard to learn it. this guy sound so cool, thank s for posting it, i love that jazz vocabulary. he sound s a bit like Louis Stewart. Bravo! one of the best 4 sure.
He is one of the best guitarist alive today. He is no copy cat. He is very creative and his lines are beautiful. It is never enough to watch him play. I may be wrong, but he had to have brain surgery, but he recovered from it. That is truly amazing if it was true. I am sure it took much effort. Thank you very much for posting it!
@Queenoftheworldisme Pat Martino was actually the jazz guitarist who underwent surgery for a brain aneurysm...not that that should diminish anything from Howard Alden, who is a beautiful player.
weird tone, but tasty licks... I'd like to see a little more creativity on the harmonic side of things. His parallel 3rd ideas are really cool though :)
And his and licks feel like they're disembarking from the time too much, and he isn't paying very close attention in those moments.
Glad to get turned onto this guy! Does this trio have a record out?

The argument I think comes fro the fact that this is a trio playing. Without a piano laying the foundation of chords it's sometimes hard to find the melody, regardless of how great the bassist and guitarist are. This recording, as great as it is, would sound a million times better with a pianist laying the chords down.
Alden is one of the greatest jazz guitarists on the scene today. Unlike some, i.e. Pat Metheny, he really knows how to swing. His teacher on 7-string guitar was the great George Van Epps. They made several CDs together.
@minor7b5 why insult another great guiatrist in order to compliment one that you prefer. This is what is wrong with guitar players of the amateur variety.
Howard is amazing! hes one of my heros. i wouldn't fault the time here as such, but it does sit a bit funny at points. he seems a bit ahead at points, maybe its deliberate.
I havent heard (blinkythefishieno12w) play but he sounds like he would sound like shit if plays like anything like what falls out of his mouth PERIOD Howard Alden has more passion and skill in his pinky then (blinkythefishieno12w) has in his entire body, now I've said my peace and I'll be getting back to shedding>
what do you know about jazz? H.A. plays perfect time. As a pro jazz guitarist & music teacher I can tell you without reservation that you don't know what you're talking about.
@hooperxxx why is it so important to call someone the best. That is ridiculous. There are many mant great guitarists out there alive. Howard is just one of many who have an A game.
Now that I get the jist of the conversation, I offer my most profound apology.:) Perhaps those of us with some real understanding of the genre shouldn't even bother answering such stupid comments. It just encourages these deadheads to write more drivel.
Jazz separates the men from the boys PERIOD!!! On ALL instruments!!! DON'T LIKE IT!!!!! F-OFF!

This man is probably one of the TOP 5 players in the country... If I tried for another 10 years, I could not even come close !

Great playing, Howard is definitely an awesome player. Always a pleasure to listen and to see him

Why take a beautiful ballad like this and rev it up? Fred Astaire and Joan Leslie's rendition the best.

It is done on purpose. Sometimes jazz musicians play ahead of the beat; sometimes behind.

I listen to Jazz religiously, comprehending it is in my proximity of musical appreciation.
