Actually from my hearing and fiddling on the piano I hear the piece in D flat so the progression is simply a D flat major chord to its first inversion then to E flat minor chord with a C flat decorating it to an A flat dom 7. In other words good old I I6 ii V7 I
But well handled and having that bassline with the flat 7 - C flat - to create the eight note scale is a wonderful touch.
The song evolves around an 8 note bassline, which is repeated throughout the whole song (although the specific octave of the bass line does change). The key of the piece, like several other of Wonder's hits, is E♭ Minor, although the bridge of the piece is slightly different. The keyboard part consists of two chords during the chorus and verse: E-flat minor 7th (third inversion) and A-flat 7 (first inversion)
Thanks! This song and "You Can't Hurry Love" were permanently etched in my brain as a little kid growing up in Detroit in the mid 60s. They were always playing as I shopped with my mom or sat in the back of my brother's Galaxie 500, and to this day I feel all these 45-year-old sensations when either song is played. It's like being home again, when Detroit was an awesome place to be.
@TheBrucey1 This drum lick was always referred to as "Motown's Four On The Floor". Definately Jamerson, and if I'm coherant enough tonight, I think it's Benny on drums. Motown typically used two drum kits at once, but this sounds solo.
@northerncrumpet NO THEY DIDN'T. What was wrong with BG for not giving them the recognition they deserved. Didn't he realize the significance they made in creating the Motown Sound?
the guitar almost sounds like it's playing a reggae song

Wonder played the keyboards and drums himself.

Hello I was wondering if there is a way to block out the back up singers and just have the instruments?

i am wondering if there is a difference between am instrumental version of a song & a recording of a song with the vocals taken off. -?-

@godhelpme2009
This is in fact the band track, that the vocalists actually added their vocals to for the eventually released version.
