Hate to say it, but this is most definitely one of the few songs Annette does better than Tarja. Her voice just brings such emotion to the song. Not that Tarja's didn't. It's just with Annette, having a purer, less vibrato-y tone, it just hits home a little harder. Furthermore, it's more suited to Annette's range, than most old NW songs. Look to right before Tarja left. They did the same thing. And how was it raped? It's just a bit of a different take on it. Raped would be, can't sing on key for anything/makes gross stylistic choices (E.G. death-gutteraling a song like this).

@MrCarmenJones Hm, I don't think that "they have lost soul". It's difficult to judge something like that, but Anette seems to "feel" what she sings in most of cases (so does Tarja). It's not easy to sing this songs with totaly different type of voice. Anette interpretes it in her own way and, yes, often shows a creativity in it. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. The fact is she's technically worse than Tarja but is still good and IMO she gave a new spirit to some tracks.
@MrCarmenJones Allow me to say something more ;). At the beggining I was thinking like you. But now I see that Anette is quite sensitive person. Her interpretations are not only depend of type of voice, but also of her own ideas. You can like it or not, but for me the soul'd be lost if the new vocalist tried to pretend Tarja. She makes mistakes, but please - open your mind and try to look at Anette as a singer herself, not Tarja's replacement ;). She deverved it.
This is not a song for Anette's voice, as the other ones, which has been written for Tarja. She just cannot sign it like Tarja, she doesn't have that wonderful, opera voice. Think her strong points (like here) are the verses, she has a very subtle, beautiful tone. Her voice may not carry as much on the chorus (on CERTAIN songs), but always brings a different flavor to the perfomance. Living in the present, not the past...She is the vocalist of the mighty Nigthwish. That's it (and there are 4 very gifted musicians up there too).
Annete has a wonderful voice, but it's obvious that there are some songs from Nightwish she cannot perform ,and this is one of them...she literally killed this awesome song....
It doesn't really matter why the hell the end was taken away, but fact is, it was already taken away in Tarja's time, so Anette's voice was not the reason.

I am shocked. Anette did great, this version of the song is beautiful too. It was a very good decision to miss the second part of the song, because it was written for Tarja's voice. I like more and more the old songs by Anette. She is an other colour in the band. And nobody can say, that black is worse than white, can they?

Anette didn`t ruin anything. She wasn`t even around when all the problems with Tarja started. In any case it was the lack of ability from both Tarja and the rest to solve their differences and Tarja was gonna leave NW after what would have been Dark Passion Play with her on board. It would have been the same result. Plus, she has improved so much since her start. If you don`t like it, don`t watch. Some of us like it

I never denied that Tarja has a lovely voice. Hearing her in some songs still brings me to tears, however, so does Anette.
Tarja is not Nightwish - she was merely the face and voice for a while. Tuomas is Nightwish, the constant glorifying of Tarja is getting old - especially since she had little if anything to do with the actual songwriting.
My question for you is if Nightwish died for you in 2005, then why do you visit videos where you know Anette is the vocalist?

No no no... thumbs down me all you want but this is horrible compared to Tarja. I'm all for bands changing their singers and stuff.... some of my favorite bands have gone through multiple singers. But one thing that attracted to me to Nightwish in the first place was the VOICE... although the music was amazing as well. Nightwish had a distinct sound with Tarja. Now it's just like every other female fronted metal band.
I'm a HUGE Anette fan as well, there are loads of songs, that Anette made better. BUT certain songs should never be played without Tarja... Like this :S

wow! WOW! i am like stunned, this is the only song i was so sure was no more after tarja, and to hear it so beautifully done, omg! lol. I was never big on them re-recording songs with annette but after hearing this and her doing ghost love score, i am like aching for an album with annette on these song, they never will do that and that's fine but that would just be so great.
I also think it would be just great! But indeed that will never do it. They had to fill in tons of paper to get an "old song" on Made in Hong Kong dvd, so they didn't do it. I don't understand the world, Tuomas created this songs and still he just can't deceide what to do with it!
Many other bands, when they get a new vocalist, will continue playing songs done with a different vocalist. Stalwarts like Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath feel the rights to perform old songs with different vocalists. Nightwish can easily share those rights and perform whatever they want with Anette.
Hell, I've never heard of a band that refused to play old songs with a new vocalist. They may exist, but those that go along the path of Maiden and friends are more common.
Just few weeks ago I told my friend "I would lov eto hear Anette singing dead Boy's Poem".. but I didn't know they were really planning to play it with her! And now.. this was just great... They MUST play it in summer on Masters Of Rock!

I never denied that Tarja has a lovely voice. Hearing her in some songs still brings me to tears, however, so does Anette.
Tarja is not Nightwish - she was merely the face and voice for a while. Tuomas is Nightwish, the constant glorifying of Tarja is getting old - especially since she had little if anything to do with the actual songwriting.
My question for you is if Nightwish died for you in 2005, then why do you visit videos where you know Anette is the vocalist?

If vocals weren't such a big part of Nightwish's music, maybe it wouldn't matter so much. But the lyrics are an important part of Tuomas' work and it sucks to see the band I love turning into something less good.

why is Tarja still being mentioned? she left the band years ago. Anette has a beautiful voice and a voice full of emotion *plus the personality*. I love this version as well as the old. I seen them perform in Brixton March 09 and Anette was amazing, she sang with soul. Every song was perfect. Best concert i've ever been too. She is doing extremely well, if only people would stop saying crap about her. Nighwish is not a pop band...they are symphonic metal...duh...

Tuomas hates the part " an oceal soul", that's why they don't play it, and when Tarja was the singer, she sang this part just once for a live dvd, or else never. So much the better because Emppu's solo is wonderful!

That was a pretty good performance on Tarja's part, but the Oceansoul part is kind of weak. I wouldn't be surprised if that was actually true that Tuomas didn't like it.

You are being the fanatic Now... I like both singers, and I think both have their qualities and mistakes.
The fact that Tarja isn't a top Classical Soprano doesn't mean she never sung well classical roles.
Her voice is actually very suited for the role of Violetta, and she sung pretty well some arias from that role I think. Of course I think she is better in metal.
And Anette is a good singer too!
Both are great and lovely as person!

No no no... thumbs down me all you want but this is horrible compared to Tarja. I'm all for bands changing their singers and stuff.... some of my favorite bands have gone through multiple singers. But one thing that attracted to me to Nightwish in the first place was the VOICE... although the music was amazing as well. Nightwish had a distinct sound with Tarja. Now it's just like every other female fronted metal band.

I was there, and Anette performs this song incredibly well. She has such power and emotion it's unbelievable.

I also think it would be just great! But indeed that will never do it. They had to fill in tons of paper to get an "old song" on Made in Hong Kong dvd, so they didn't do it. I don't understand the world, Tuomas created this songs and still he just can't deceide what to do with it!

Many other bands, when they get a new vocalist, will continue playing songs done with a different vocalist. Stalwarts like Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath feel the rights to perform old songs with different vocalists. Nightwish can easily share those rights and perform whatever they want with Anette.
Hell, I've never heard of a band that refused to play old songs with a new vocalist. They may exist, but those that go along the path of Maiden and friends are more common.
