I've been thinking about why it was so inconceivable that one would lie down in a bathtub. No idea why the men couldn't fathom it, but I think the women wouldn't have wanted to get their hair wet- in those days, ladies had their hair done once a week, during which the hairdresser would wash their hair and then set it. I don't think they washed it at home from week to week, and would in fact avoid getting it wet and ruining the "set". So that might be why they never reclined in the tub.
Is it safe for me to say I didn't like Dorothy very much. Maybe it's just because I'm such a huge Arlene fan I don't know but she never really got my attention.
(4:07) Daly was the master of interpretive semantics. His clarification of Dorothy's question, which we notice assumes something not entirely correct, stands as an all time classic.
Thanks! These WML clips with more or less outrageous professions are the ones I enjoy the most. Some of the old US celebrities are totally unknown here in Europe!
Xmas Greetings from Finland, and thanks once more!
@cottagechskitty I have read that she did have an addiction to prescription drugs at one time. I've often wondered if the alignment of her jaws didn't somehow interfere with her speech. Anyone know more about this?
Thanx crepehanger47 for posting this classic. It illustrates all the elements that made WML sophisticated entertainment: an amusing contestant, an interesting job, Daly's brilliant, over-literal clarifications not too much info, not too little, Kilgallen playing seriously and to win as she skates close to the garden path's edge. I regard that look she gives Mr. Seymour at 4:37 followed by that coy reprimand as a major DK comic bonanza.
I did not understand what John Daly said at 4:44 in response to Dorothy's comment. His laughter made it nearly impossible for me to make it out. Can you tell me what he said?
Well said! DK always plays to win. This is one of my favourite segments with her. She gets alot of questions in!
Has anyone else noticed she seems to be the only one that actually takes notes while the other penelists are asking questions. I wonder if they all got a pen and paper or if she specifically requested it.. we'll probably never know!
@EDH1712 once on the syndicated version of what's my line arlene answered a letter from a viewer about writing something down during the game. she was asked in such a way as to assume they were cheating in someway she was noticeably irrated. she replied that since the board the person name was written on was removed after it was signed the panel would jot down the person name so they would remember it during the game. so far as dorothy goes do would want to ask the same question another panelist
What's My Line at YouTube, where we can forget all about credit crunches and financial disaster, and, instead, simply wallow in the most wonderful nostalgia.
crepehanger47, thanks once again for posting these great clips.

6:20 What a hoot when the normally urbane, sophisticated John Daly adopts a sort of Brooklyn-ish accent!!!

@Kate8790 Just because you are an Arlene fan doesn't mean you can't like Dorothy. I love both of them!

I suspect that might well be something to do with her job as a journalist.

I suspect you're right :)

Bennett jots down notes sometimes. I've never seen Arlene make a note of anything, but she was sharp enough to keep up.
Dorothy studied her little notes and played the game to the hilt! She played to win. Period.
