REALLY!! USE SOME TERMINOLOGY THAT MAKES YOU LIKE AN INSTRUCTOR AND NOT LIKE A 'DUMB AMERICAN'!
@GamerHalo982 Part 2 (ha ha ha extended rant that is really unnecessary...)
My biggest annoyance with this particular video is that the title and the content of the video doesn't, in my opinion, match up to each other. The title suggests that there will be brief but meaningful tips about using katana swords in a safe manner. But instead, it took him a minute to say "be careful and don't hurt anyone" without actually telling the audience how to do so like proper technique, etc.
I can't use a sword for shit. I got one because it looked cool , went hillbilly crazy using it to cut weeds outside and cut the back of my leg on an accident. it sliced me open like cutting through butter.
yes I have tasted the cold fury of the blade, it didn't hurt because it cut me so fast.
Typical american expert WOW!!!! Like the one american food i like this is all WAFFLE!!!! keep pushing out pulp like this and the true essence of sword training will only remain in japan, not such a bad thing if this is where the western world is going. Just ask yourself if you in japan would you see this kind of expert video?
@pupskannake It easily could be. Bokken are actually crazy hard. Sure, bokken won't cut through your torso like a katana would, but it can easily fracture your ribs, puncturing your lungs with bone. It wasn't uncommon for people to die in sparing matches because they took an unfortunate blow with a wooden sword.
I think he knows what he's doing but, come on man... "You definately dont wanna slice your foot open, it may cause permanent damage..." Your powers of perception are frightening...
I get the feeling he is 5'2" or so. These are great safety tips for fighting and training with katanas. wow. The only thing I got out of it is don't swing down on your foot or something. Great stuff guy, good advise if you have shit for brains.
If "often you can take that cut straight down into your foot" you are too green to be using a shinken. In fact, if you're getting any closer than several feet from the floor while making a standing cut at a standing opponent, you're going to school that espouses nonsense and if you want to learn the real thing, look elsewhere. Even koryu rarely get the monouchi lower than a couple degrees off the parallel.
Paired sparring can be done with wooden swords (bokken or mokgum), but to use a chingum/real sword for practise? That's not safe.
Even mentioning that bringing the sword down onto one's foot is off the mark, IMHO. If you make a proper cut and then mess it up, the sword will hit your leg, not your foot, and it won't be 'bad', it'll be fatal...
ok dude first if your gonna learn any form of iaido you need to definately have a live sword. If your gonna spar use a bokken. and second you should never be able to cut your own foot because you should never cross step in the direction your blade is going.
I think the guy in the video means that if you have a live sword and fuck up, there is the possibility you will cut yourself, not everyone is going to be perfect all the time.
If you're training in a real Kenjustu school You are allowed to train only with a wood bokken.A steel edge(blunt or sharp) is allowed to use when your sensei thinks you can handle it and that takes about 7-10 years
Really? So you think that is what they did in the old days? LOL I know way to many beginners with no Martial Arts experience who start out with steel blunts. They get better faster that way also.
You can start beginers on steel blunts and wood. They will learn control. Historically, wood and steel blunts, mostly steel blunts, were used to teach swordmanship. When in free-play(sparring) you make good contact with good edge allighnment. Don't follow through hard or they will have more than a bruise. Control, control, control.
Hey DRUNKnaxi. Using shinai to teach swordsmanship is like trying to teach someone to swim in a kiddie pool. It is to light and does not react like a sword. Even simple actions and techniques are dramatically different. Aluminum is also to light. Use Steel blunts. not Stainless steel. real swords are not made of stainless steel. It is to hard and when it breaks it will hurt you. By live steel do you mean sharp? Don't use sharp for anything other than cutting.
I like how he neglects to mention that the reason the Shinai was adopted for training bouts was because people were getting killed using the Bokken. :P
The foam ones he mentioned could be a good alternative, though I would wonder about how they handle relative to a real metal katana.
Shinai are a crappy tool for sword training. Foam covered boken take the feel out of it. You cant feel pressure through the foam. Bokken are good and steel blunts are best. I don't know of anyone makeing good steel blunt katana with rounded tips though. Good luck. I would recomend wearing a 3w fencing mask for any sword(or knife) training.
Yeah, I know about the Shinai. I took a Kendo class for a while and the balance of the Shinai was whacked out compared to the katana and bokken I have. I stopped going to that class after about 5 sessions.
yes, live steel is available for such purposes. it is aluminum and non-edged. I would not advise an initiate to use such a thing until one has mastered the use of both the shinai and bokken. using the shinai in practice with ones fellows and the bokken used to fully understand the "follow through" of the momentum of live steel. Using a railroad tie upright with an old tire makes for great bokken practice. I do not understand your argument against the use of the shinai, you puzzle me.

I'm not saying that I agree with all of @Dragonfly382's points, but he's right when he says that this man has no business teaching Japanese swordsmanship. It doesn't matter if he's "doing his best" if the instruction he's giving is still incorrect and could lead to someone hurting themselves because they tried to imitate what he was showing.
right right touche. -doesnt touch non-combat sword anymore- well i didnt anyway i have a few of those cheap fantasy swords that i dont use theyre just for display. but yea your right i do remember people telling me that when i bought them
You do have a point there. The purpose of practicing with a unshaped Iaito is to safely practice, but you practice exactly what you would do with your real weapon, or else when you grab the real one there will be hard to break habits. Respecting the weapon is basic on Japanese arts. Even if it doesnt rust, even if it's a pactice weapon it is considered rude and bad ettiquette to touch the blade.
there is nothing wrong with touching a katana.... fk so much ignorance...
its designed to cut through FLESH. touching the blade is absolutely necessary in noto, the myth that you cant touch the blade is BULLSHIT. it was propagated by james williams it just helps the dealers and collectors so they dont have to clean the blade everytime some ignorant redneck puts his grubby fingers all over it.
touching the blade just means it must be cleaned, something you should be doing anyway
I use Korean rather than Japanese terminology, but here goes... Yes, one will touch the kum ding (back) of the sword, and the part used for chiggo (side), but the kumnal (sharp edge) shouldn't be touched except, sometimes, with the very tips of one's fingernails.
Even then, it's not a good idea. To avoid injury and damage to the sword (or your hands), his advice is good: Never touch the metal part of the sword, except when sheathing it, and even tehn stay clear of the sharp edge/kumnal.
uh maxcees... are you kidding me? You believe that because you can hold a real sword you are a great swordsmen, uh.... You are not even close. I have been trainging in the way of the sword many different styles and techniques since I was six years old, I never once thought because I could weild a real blade that I was great, I still learn and I teach what I have learned to others. I believe that you just want to fit in with everyone else here that actually has experiance with a blade and other.
Not that i'm a expert but i know to talk about these things and what pisses me off most is they always pronounce those word fucked up but really fucked but that's just me
Safety!? *Ha* you shouldn't even handle a katana until you're of second degree black belt. Even training with bokuto, safety is not an issue. There's a reason they call it TRAINING. If you can't take a hit from a piece of wood without complaining, then maybe you shouldn't be training in the way of the sword in the first place.
What would the belt you have have anything to do with using a sword? Weapons are not an addendum to empty hand training, they are an art unto themselves. You don't need a black belt or any belt to learn the sword. More dojo nonsense designed to make money, simple propaganda mumbo jumbo BS. Like saying I need to learn to cook before I can drive a car, there is no relation whatsoever.
but then again, my dojo is more passionate then corperate, they actually love to teach and practice ninjutsu compared to these american karate bull crap lame excuse of a martial art. Pure money making dojo's
too bad they wernt more passionate about doing the research,.. or about telling the truth...
ninjutsu died in the 60's with Seiko Fujita,
if you can name a legitimate practitioner tho, im sure the Nihon Kobudo Shinkokai would love to hear about them, dont expect them to be accepted tho, only Koryu are allowed...

non alive blades suck
i use my self always real blades
becous if you don't your bad becous you are scard to cut your self if you ant scard your a good fighter if your don't beleef in your self you always suck
I'm an expert since I use a real blade, even that I hardly know much in Iaido, even though I've managed to cut myself during shibori-noto, I'm an expert?
But experts never miss... yet they use real blades.. Sounds.. flawed..
((spelling ~ for those who does not know, meaning the shaking of blood & re-sheating of the blade.))
its k man this guys on crack, he problably ddoesnt even do kenjutsu or iaido... and he problably ddoesnt even know its takes easily 2 years of every day constant training for your body to learn how to pull a sword out and how to put it in correctly
A belt means nothing, it is arbitrary and totally irrelevant. I have yet to see a belt fly off someones waist and beat their foe. No, belts mean absolutely nothing, zero, zip, nada. The truth is belts area commercial invention so schools can control the rate at which you advance, and in turn make more money off of you, nothing more.
bokken wooden sword or shinai bamboo sword he didnt really say anything but whi gives a shit if hes young my cousins ar 26 and theyr 4th degree black belts
I think the advice this person gives isn't bad at all. Of course, it is always better to train at a school with someone who has plenty of training... BUT... if that is not an option for you, much can be extrapolated from what you see in these "How to" videos. Better than nothing, anyway. Try to chill a bit.
Bokken are not "safe", they are Safer than a live blade but the can still break bones, or worst case scenario kill someone, and Shinai are definately not good if your not wearing padding or armour infact anythong other than a softcore Foam/Rubber bokken is more than likely a very bad idea without going to a legit dojo that teaches correct sword handling technique.
Gee...if I do recall my samurai history correctly....didn't Miyamoto Musashi KILL a guy in a beach side duel after he fashened a bokken from a boat oar. I do believe he beat his face in and KILLED him! NOTE!!! BOKKEN are NOT SAFE TRAINING TOOLS! BE CAREFUL.
I use extremely sharp katanas and I never get hurt and that's because I know what I'm doing

One thing that anyone who's ever sparred with a mock sword(wood, plastic, or otherwise) has felt the pain of is the classic knuckle shot.
Get hit there enough and you'll get used to it.

I have been trainging in the way of the sword many different styles and techniques since I was six years old, I never once thought because I could weild a real blade that I was great, I still learn and I teach what I have learned to others. I believe that you just want to fit in with everyone else here that actually has experiance with a blade and other.

Safety!? *Ha* you shouldn't even handle a katana until you're of second degree black belt. Even training with bokuto, safety is not an issue. There's a reason they call it TRAINING. If you can't take a hit from a piece of wood without complaining, then maybe you shouldn't be training in the way of the sword in the first place.
gimely67 2 years ago
You could take the cut down into your foot? I laughed so hard. But yes I agree, don't handle a real blade until you know how to use it.
xenadon 2 years ago
What would the belt you have have anything to do with using a sword? Weapons are not an addendum to empty hand training, they are an art unto themselves. You don't need a black belt or any belt to learn the sword. More dojo nonsense designed to make money, simple propaganda mumbo jumbo BS. Like saying I need to learn to cook before I can drive a car, there is no relation whatsoever.

yeah im in a martial arts class and im a white belt for 1 and a half months and we already train with swords
ihatefatpeople3000 2 years ago
but then again, my dojo is more passionate then corperate, they actually love to teach and practice ninjutsu compared to these american karate bull crap lame excuse of a martial art. Pure money making dojo's
ihatefatpeople3000 2 years ago
too bad they wernt more passionate about doing the research,.. or about telling the truth...
ninjutsu died in the 60's with Seiko Fujita,
if you can name a legitimate practitioner tho, im sure the Nihon Kobudo Shinkokai would love to hear about them, dont expect them to be accepted tho, only Koryu are allowed...
Creationsofmyown 2 years ago
Im curious about this seiko fujita, the books they taught me in my dojo were about the grandmasters of ninjitsu
ihatefatpeople3000 2 years ago
Good! Finally! Promote safety, now learn to use the sword in a safe manor too!

Een jochie van 21 een expert met de katana ? Laat me niet lachen.
Pas maar op dat de politie er niet achter komt dat jij er eentje hebt, ook al is het een namaak dingetje van de ''Large''.

So by your logic..
Zeithri 3 years ago
its k man this guys on crack, he problably ddoesnt even do kenjutsu or iaido... and he problably ddoesnt even know its takes easily 2 years of every day constant training for your body to learn how to pull a sword out and how to put it in correctly

a belt doesnt mean shit.. its what you know that counts... a belt is for keeping your gi together
kendoman2000 3 years ago
A belt means something.
It means that you may have learned everything there is to learn in the current school you have been in.
Doesn't mean you are justified to use that black belt in a new school just because you got it from one school.
Therefor, Belts mean something.
Even if that something is just to hold your outfit togheter.
Zeithri 3 years ago 3
A belt means nothing, it is arbitrary and totally irrelevant. I have yet to see a belt fly off someones waist and beat their foe. No, belts mean absolutely nothing, zero, zip, nada. The truth is belts area commercial invention so schools can control the rate at which you advance, and in turn make more money off of you, nothing more.

I think the advice this person gives isn't bad at all. Of course, it is always better to train at a school with someone who has plenty of training... BUT... if that is not an option for you, much can be extrapolated from what you see in these "How to" videos. Better than nothing, anyway. Try to chill a bit.

Again, learn kendo for gods sake before you end up working at Mikey deez!
Mrgoogle8 3 years ago

BE CAREFUL.
