Trash or not, it is still someone else's property. It is most often against the/a law to take that stuff. I hate the waste as much as you folks, and have heard that more food falls on the ground and rots than could feed the world for nothing, every year. That's so true about kids in school throwing perfectly good stuff out. When I was in tech school in the Air Force people would throw out whatever didn't fit in their bag or exceeded travel weight limits. When I went to throw stuff out, I'd see brand new irons, towels, shoes, alarm clocks etc. I guess it's best to get stuff from someone that can't wait to get the F#@$ out of a place.

Why dont you take this a step further and use this food to help feed someone that cant eat every night. That maybe dosent have 6000 dollars a year to spend on eating. I live in France and here, when you dont empty your plate at table, it means that it was so good that you ate too much and cant finish it. The problem with this theory is exposure to disease. You have no idea why some people throw things away. The food could have been exposed to dangerous chemicals or bacteria.

You're gambling with your life so to speak as the risk is significantly higher for poisoning than if you commandeered food in a traditional manner.
