This is one of my favourite books. It's the whole point that his life is very boring from a normal perspective, but not from the perspective of a prisoner. His life is incredibly hard and at risk all the time and the smallest things give him a sense of survival and triumph. I like this book because you never feel hard done by or sorry for yourself again after reading this. It is anti-depressant in effect and shows how resilient the human spirit can be under the most difficult circumstances.
Nice comments on Solzhenitsyn's book. I have to wonde though, this footage is about American POWs in Japanese occupied Phillippines in WWII. The conditions were certainly comparable but that was the tropics. I doubt that Bolshevics would have allowed their victims to be buried w/ crosses either.
This paints a bad picture of the book. While it was conveying the wretched life of political prisoners it was also showing the resolve of the Russian people and how socialism and/or legalism can satisfy basic human needs, on a small scale.
I wonder if was easier to fight (for dignity or freedom, etc.) when the enemy was so very clear..the enemy is so serreptitious today, soothing us with comforts and distractions (e.g. television) I believe people today still have courage and want to stand up for what's right, they simply don't know who the enemy is and are far too uneducated to begin to learn
I remember reading this book when I was in High School in the late 1960's. It reminded me that there were evil people in the world, and how important it is to stand up against them, the way Alexander Solzhenitsyn did, by writing the truth. I wonder if he had YouTube, how would that story be told today?
The book was so graphically detailed. When the author talked about the cold it would make me think what the prisoners were going through. Im glad I came across a good book for my English paper.
WTF?! Thats because it is! This is from a movie called The Great Raid! It came out a few years ago! There is a movie for the book but, to the best of my knowledge it hasn't come out on DVD yet. I guess some people couldn't wait.
I just saw part two in HD quality here >> bit.ly\kfFuWR << the ending is really cool!!!

I love this book. So far, I've read it about twice. I think it's time for another re-read when I finally graduate college.

Great film and I wish they would release it - but this seems to be more Japanese prison camp than Siberian Gulag! Never kid a kidder!
