I don't want to say anything about Monaco :p it was a bad day for the ICEMAN. Singapore, normal crash. Silverstone? was it the race where Hamilton and many more people spun as well? Sometimes you should go check Kimi when he was on Sauber and on McLaren. Especially 2005 Suzuka. From 17th to first. Kimi was faster driver that Alonso and you CAN NOT argue with that.

Not a fan of Alonso because I don't think he deserved either one of his championships. Kimi was clearly faster AND always overtook Alonso. And I'm a fan of Hamilton as well. He is really fast and always trying to overtake. But I don't care anymore you clearly just care about your Alonso. in any single seater, the mirrors are crap, they vibrate, shake around and they're tiny, and you can only see directly behind you. they're just there to make the car legal.

when you have a car weaving behind you, you'll have no clue what he's doing/where he's going, having your engineer talking to you is a very good substitute for those cruddy mirrors.

and you dont even listen to the whole transmition, just the bits you need to hear.

I was watching the race on Sunday and Martin Brundle himself said that they are useless and you cant see anything from them, just there for regulations. And as for which way they are coming from, f1 cars never really block opponents, take your eye of the road for a second and you're in trouble.

But the whole point is that so the driver knows what they "need" and what they are actually doing at the time, but i agree with you, i think that other than laptimes and whos being quicker than you and where, theres no need to be trying to teach a pro f1 driver how to brake and accelerate, it can be distracting, besides its a freakin engineer not like a driving coach. Unless they are co-drivers from the wrc THEN they may talk lol! those guys know it all!

Hehe, I may have exaggerated a bit. But what engineers actually do say sometimes is stuff like "Push, push, push!" when you're already on the absolute limit and you are perfectly well aware of what you need to do. Especially Rubens' engineer seems to do that a lot.

Well, the F1 drivers know very well what to do, but the relationship between drivers and engineers is very close, they know each other very well I guess.

And not only in F1, but in any other sport or competition things like that happen, something like **go go, you can do it (even harder)** is just an incentive to do it over the limit, in my opinion.

Probably differs from driver to driver and somebody like Barrichello who's engineer is Captain Obivious might want it that way but I certainly can't understand it. When I drive and know I have the chance to catch somebody nobody needs to tell me to push just to motivate me or anything. If you need that you must've had problems in smaller classes without team radio with morale support. And if you don't really need it why have it at all? It's just a distraction.

I'll try to sum it up really simply for you: yes, the team radio is important but shouting in a driver's ear that he needs to push when he's already on the limit like a lot of engineers do doesn't serve a purpose. Btw, your "F1 simulator" argument is flawed since most games use HUD for most relevant information.

@Rosvolainen im with you, even on simulator games, if i talk to someone i fuck up, so i cant even imagine how hard that would be. and i think a simple way to put it to gustavotenis is that a driver is always pushing, unless told otherwise, so a message like that is just irritating. and yes the mirrors only show the sides, but he would have seen him approaching, and when he disappears from the mirrors, he knows he is right behind his, impossible to get behind without being seen.

I was thinking about that when I watched the race last Sunday and Andrea Stella told Alonso something like "We know you try your best but now it's time to show the pace of your talent", or something like that, when he was stuck behind Petrov. It's sort of like he was saying 'We know you think you are doing your best but you are not. Do better!' As if Alonso didn't care as much/more about the title as they did.

@Rosvolainen lol, i had the same thought. final race for the championship! im pretty sure he would be on the limit all the time, even if he was told to back off. there is a good example of kimi running wide and saying to his team "dont talk to me in the middle of a corner", and when its just to say PUSH, it's risking an off for no reason. they should put the mechanics in a pretty fast car for a few laps and keep talking in there ear, then maybe they would understand.

@samiojo Yeah, I too think the problem is that the engineers don't know what it's like to race. The probably feel like they want to be in control of what happens. It's a bit like sports coaches except that most sports coaches have been players themselves, while engineers just do the math etc and can't relate to the psychology of a driver.
