  • Was just looking threw some old LAFG videos & rewatched this one b/c I'm starting a SH tank. Curious, any of the garden eels left?

  • hey L, actually, I still have two left.

  • Ground the Aquarium water!

  • there tank raised and yes they love my amphipods and are already eating frozen mysis love your videos thanks for posting all this great stuff to help people in this hobby.

  • Hi, jim i just went to S.D.C today and got 2 tank raised kellogi sea horses and i wanted to know how much should i feed them cuz there eating my amphipods. and will xenia corals sting the horses? thanks

  • hey 14, if they are wild-caught seahorses chances are they may only seek out live foods. have adult brine shrimp and live copepods on hand.

  • Hey man, how is the livestock in this tank doing?

  • hey M, most of the seahorses were sold, i did looose the last two. I still have two of the garden eels.

  • how much did one garden eel cost

  • hey A, around $20

  • Hey jim, I really enjoy your videos, I learn a lot. I'd recommend one thing that you seem to avoid. Like the old saying, Safety First, I agree with that as well. Whenever you add electricity & water, you have a potential fatal combination. I ALWAYS use a G.F.C.I. extension cord at the base of my power outlet/receptacle. You've never said anything about the use of GFCI's in any of your videos. Obvously you've never been electrocuted or shocked when you reach your hand into a tank (yet).

  • hey A, actually i have been shocked as a result of powerheads, submersible pumps and heaters. as good as GFI's are they sometimes are too sensitive and trip at just the wrong time. while I do have GFI's in my Jelliquarium cabinet systems I do not know on may aquarium related product that have it.

  • o hey an can u do a vid about how to setup a seahorse tank/ how to breed seahorses, that would really help thx

  • hey , wat types of seahorses are those, dwarf seahorses??

  • hey X, Hippocampus Erectus, tank raised ( see part 3 of this episode ).

  • how do u feed your garden eels?

  • hey R, i rinse the small pieces of Mysis off in this tank after feeding the other fish. the small pieces float around and move across the bottom where the eels feed on it.

  • how big is that tank

  • hey N, its a 35 hexagon tank

  • @lafishguy don't u need abou 100 to keep any eels?

  • hey N, these are small eels, and as much as I dont promote small tanks I have had these eels in this 35 for almost a year now.

  • I know this is quite an old episode, aand i've probably commented before, but i have let again more quetsions:

    1. Do you know personally the people at Seahorse source? or are you just like another customer to them?

    2. Where'd you get those fake plants from in there? I can't find any that look real!!

    3. how long does a searhose live? I heard from some place that its like 10 year, and others that its only 2 or 3?

  • hey C, i do not know them personally. the plants are custom made. it is possible Seahorses can live for a number of years under good conditions, but most often less.

  • the plants are custom made? i didn't think that was possible! Cool! :)

But i've discovered that the BiOrb plants look fairly realistic, although they're slightly small.

It's a shame about the lifespan. Do you still have all these ones in this tank?

  • C, the plants and seahorses? yes.

  • ah so you've been fairly sucessful with yours then? :)

I hope you get babies :D

  • C, yes I have.

  • great video jim as always. keep moving forward, right on man.

  • Awsome series of videos Jim. Did those horses come from ORA??

I lost my seahorse of almost 5 years a few months ago. I would love to get several more. They are so amazing to keep. The PE mysis makes it so much easier to feed them.

  • hey C, i was surprised to find out ORA inmports their horses from the wild. I am purchasing from Seahorse Source. they provide tank raised horses, and so far I am very pleased with them.

  • hey fishguy. you ever do any freshwater tanks? more specifically any cichlid tanks?

  • hey S, i am not much into FW tanks. i have only two that I service.

  • What brand of food are you using for the seahorses/eels Jim?

  • hey O, Piscine Energetics brand mysis shrimp.

  • What does a Sea horse feel like?

  • hey Z, its boney or semi rigid.

  • may i know if it is salt water or fresh water?

  • take a guess genius

  • hey S, it is saltwater.

  • Did I count 8 or 10 horses. Eitherway thats quite a bit for such a small tank, dont you think? With not that great of a filter system as well. Horses grow like weeds and breed like rabbits. Huge bioload.

  • hey B, it was 10 new horses plus the four Garden Eels, and the two established horses. all are doing well. the tank could benifit from a protein skimmer though as the mysis is so rich..

  • you r right abou the mysis, you r either going to have to make some changes or have a seriously high maintenence tank. If fed correctly and they survive ur horses can triple in size in a couple months, then what? Not to mention the stuff u can introduce to ur tank buy using real sea water and sand. not a good idea with captive bred kinda defeats the purpose, mixing different species of horses is rarely successful as well. sounds to me like a ticking time bomb. surprised to see you do so. goodlu

  • hey B, you guys seem to forget, i am a aquarium maintenance business and not a one-tank venture. all of my tanks here are really just tempoary homes. all 10 of those horses have been sold and a new batch re-ordered.

  • my other post didnt go through. I said that a tank with that mny inhabitants with just a sponge filter and some bioballs(nitrate factory) I cant see being sufficent. Askimmer will help but not solve the problem. After researching the sw hobby for a year I started a tank , a seahorse tank my first people said I was crazy. I have been very succesful. after a year of keeping them I got a male and started to breed(very difficult) I have my 1st brood now, a month old.

  • My set up: 35g hex 20g sump,I custom built it. intank overflow from glassholes 2 return lines 1/2" locline. proclear 75 skimmer 120lbs lr some in the tank most in the sump. 2"sb I built my sump in 3 compartments skimmer, rock, return I have also made the rock section into a trickle filter water flows over a 100 micron pad and trickles to the rock. with a 320gph turnover. overkill? you would think being that all I have is 3 adult horses a watchman, 2 chromis, a firefish and a dragonette ,

  • a sand sifting star about 20 hermits, and 2 feather dusters. corals: 3 gorgonians, 2 zoas, couple shrooms. If I dont change 5 gallons a week and clean the tank it gets outta controll, nitrates rise. probaly due to the fact of the mysis, adult horse have to eat alot I feed my tank about 3 to 4 cubes Thawed and rinsed aday and it all gets eaten by someone,I cant imagine how much you will have to feed. Not trying to be difficult But alot of people see this and think hey thats not hard ican do tht

  • seahorses are one the hardest things to keep in the home aquria. you really have to be on your game, The slightest thing can stress them and lead to disease and eventually death. I think its great what you do, hell, I watched a lot of your vids before I got started (very helpful) But I think you may be being a little cavalier with the horses imho. give dan and abby a call at seahorse source and Im sure they will tell you the same thing. ( very friendly experienced people). Hope it works out.

  • hey B, Seahorse Source is who I am getting the horses from. its our forth order over the last year.

  • I know thats why I said it.

  • hey B, i do have to say, I've not put as much effort, equipment or time as you do and other than cleaning the tank every two weeks the horses and eels have all done well.

  • So far, as I said for the first few weeks or even a month or so you probably be fine. but after that its curtains. I meant to ask you if you were selling them and if that was just a holding tank. I kind of thought it was. just want to make it clear to the people reading whats temporary and whats permanent. So many paople go to lfs and see a horse and take it home with no idea of what lies ahead. I know your way more experienced than me in the hobby I am not contesting that at all.

  • But you even admitted yourself you are new to horses. Tank raised horses definetly make it easier but still difficult. Biggest reason for tank raised is the disease factor, They have not been subjected to alot of stuff so their healthier. However their immunity can not handle certain things, thats why Imo i dont think natural sea wter and sand was a good idea. captive breeding does have its downfall. It is a broad spectrum on how people keep their tanks theres so many different ways to do it.

  • with the same goal in mind. You have to admit that tank would not make it long term. For the people reading this, I am in know way questioning fishguys experience, he would run circles around me and he seems to be a great guy as well. I just had to chime in with my 2cents on the seahorse thing. I dont ever think theres anything wrong with a friendly debate in the saltwater hobby. Thats how we all learn. Wouldnt you agree? I said to a guy when I first got started that I was going to experiment

  • with keeping horses, His reply all of our tanks are experiments. Couldnt be more right. well fishguy keep up the good work and I'll be back! LOL.

  • B, and other than feeding the horses daily I have two service customers that are also enjoying sucsess. I really do think tank-raised horses have made it much easier.

  • hey B, some poeple go to the extreme end of the hobby and others barely 'get their feet wet'. just goes to show there are many approaches to success.

  • Hey Jim, what is the going rate for those sea horses?

  • hey K, $50 to $75 depending on shipping costs and quantity.

  • if the filter is in the tank, what is under the tank??

  • hey G, other than a power strip, nothing below but space.

  • ahh i've been waiting for a seahorse episode for a while now :) Thanks LA.

Are these dwarf seahorses? Or just babies?

  • hey C, they are 3" H. erectus

  • thanks - sorry i found this out by watching this episode in the wrong order :P

    Thanks anyway :D

  • I love it. Great video. Seahorses are awesome and you to look to be very successful with them. Are you happy with Seahorse Source and would you recommend them?

  • key L, yes, i just placed a second order with them yesterday.

  • hey T, every other week a bottle of live copepods is poured into all my seahorse tanks.

  • hey T, thats another video.

  • Could you show some information in a video on how much you feed your fish, how much and what so that can be understood more. There is not much information on the web on how much people should feed and how often.

  • great vid keep them coming :)

  • the seahorses look great seahorse source sell top quality livestock. Great video jim hope all your livestock survive for you in there so you can enjoy them for years to come.

  • first view and comment woop woop!! (and rate)

  • dude really give it up. no one really cares.

  • i know it was a joke

  • hahahhahah.......NOT T_T
