shredding sucks. it takes some skill to shred but not talent. if you can play the blues like bb king then youre good at guitar. if you can turn any heavy metal, rock, pop, hip hop, r&b, etc. song into a fingerpicking arrangement like sungha jung and igor presnyakov then youre good at guitar. if you crazily shred random notes w/o any soul, rhythym, or passion and just play as many notes as you can in a short amount of time you just suck. no i cant play that but i dont want to be able to either.

@GuitarLord3000 I disagree. Ignorant people think that the notes in shredding are random. They are not. They, like all other music, follow modes (phrygian, dorian, aolian, etc). To sweep an arpeggio and then do a scale run from 19 on high E to 12 on the Low E using 16th note triplets is not someone sucking. And not for nothing, ANY skilled metal guitarist can easily play most blues arrangements. They're the fundamentals of a lot of styles. Good guitarists can play a multitude of styles anyhow.

@GuitarLord3000 Being able to play a multitude of styles and techniques make you a good guitarist, not because you play blues or slow. Blues isn't incredibly hard. Most metal guitarist who "aren't good" because they shred can play blues pretty well, and Classical styles and such. Example: Angra - The Shadow Hunter. Stuff like this is too easy to be on a "betcha can't play this."
All I do is just play a bunch of scales, arpeggios, throw in some chromatics, and do that for an hour to get my hand strong enough to even play anything. I'm considered a prodigy I guess, seeing as how I mastered all styles in little time.

shredding sucks. it takes some skill to shred but not talent. if you can play the blues like bb king then youre good at guitar. if you can turn any heavy metal, rock, pop, hip hop, r&b, etc. song into a fingerpicking arrangement like sungha jung and igor presnyakov then youre good at guitar. if you crazily shred random notes w/o any soul, rhythym, or passion and just play as many notes as you can in a short amount of time you just suck. no i cant play that but i dont want to be able to either.

@GuitarLord3000 I disagree. Ignorant people think that the notes in shredding are random. They are not. They, like all other music, follow modes (phrygian, dorian, aolian, etc). To sweep an arpeggio and then do a scale run from 19 on high E to 12 on the Low E using 16th note triplets is not someone sucking. And not for nothing, ANY skilled metal guitarist can easily play most blues arrangements. They're the fundamentals of a lot of styles. Good guitarists can play a multitude of styles anyhow.

My college guitar teacher is a jazz musician who taught me all about jazz that I would need to know on guitar. Anyway He can shred very well. @GuitarLord3000 Being able to play a multitude of styles and techniques make you a good guitarist, not because you play blues or slow. Blues isn't incredibly hard. Most metal guitarist who "aren't good" because they shred can play blues pretty well, and Classical styles and such. Example: Angra - The Shadow Hunter. However you aren't a good guitarist, due to you're more ignorant to a style of guitar playing instead of working on being able to do it.
