  • I love Michael Culver in this. He plays his role with subtle humor which is a great foil for Brett's comic extravagance.

  • Holmes Never Married ... I think in the end he went crazy

  • @vampyren1 he never whent crazy he died of cancer at age 75 just to put that out there.

  • @Wildave007 No you just spoiled me to death. :/ Wahhh, I have just began reading the book and now I know how the whole thing will end!!! XD

  • @MyLillteFallenAngel Sorry His death was never mentioned in the books. Only in the unpublished journals.

Still Im so sorry I spoiled it for you. Keep reading, their a wonderful seires.

  • Some nice stuff to see here...Watson's fascination with Holmes's early cases...Watson being left behind, for once, while Holmes catches up with an old uni mate...and Holmes off his skull on coke and Watson trying to cover for him lol.

(I always thought that Musgrave might already be aware of Holmes's junkie habits, since he knew him at uni. And despite what Holmes says, Musgrave seems like a perfectly friendly fellow here, and Holmes certainly seems eager to chat with him).

  • Thanks for uploading man! What a series...more stuff like that should be on TV nowadays...

  • i love the way he says "poise"

  • Watson: splendid air!!

    Homes: COUGH COUGH COOUUUUGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • If I recall correctly, both in the books and in the series it is said that Holmes turned to substance abuse to handle the intolerable boredom between significant cases and the drudgery of everyday life. There was a TV play in which Holmes confronts Sir Arthur Conan Doyle on the issue, based on the story that the author had tired of Holmes and, having failed to kill him on previous occasions, tried to make him unpalatable.

  • I love the odd bickering Holmes and Watson in-between; the thought that Sherlock is only mildly, if at all, irritated by Watson reminding him to tidy up their flat to a point where he dramatically will describe it as "bullying" just brings a smile to my lips.

Also 9.25-10.00 is just too adorable a moment with Holmes' bursts of laughter, and Watson's giggling, while trying to control himself and stay polite to their host.

  • sick,trippy Holmes is so adorable 8:39

  • I've been watching versions of Sherlock Holmes since I was a kid and I still delight in the interplay between Holmes & Watson, no matter the players!! Now I love period drama so I'm settling in for a bit...

  • Just putting it out there to people with taste, have you seen, "Little Ashes?" It is one of the best movies I've ever come across. Everything about it is close to perfect(I cringe a little typing that but. .). The director, the subject, the time, the wardrobe, the photography, etc. It's here on Youtube and on my channe. I wasn't comfortable with the subject at first but it grew on me the more I watched it. One of those movies. I watch the main actors the first time. 2nd all around them.

  • "Spendid air."

    *nasty hack-coughing*

    lol :)

  • he sounded so pleased with himself when he said 'Aluminium Crotch'

  • 8:29 I laughed SO HARD at that part. High Holmes is hilarious and awesome.

  • @bwahahachick Is he high or just messing them around??

  • @catherinespark Oh, he is as high as a kite right there, believe me.

  • @bwahahachick Fair enough!

  • Sherlock is riding high on his drug.. in this scene at 920... loud laughing and extreme expressions... totally bonkers.. but Brett is so good at what he does.

  • very nice, only holmes' laugh is overplayed

  • was Watson and Sherlock Holmes considered middle class or wealthy?

  • @UglyBetty70 I'd say wealthy. It would seem like it

  • Whoa... Watson turned blue...

  • i love jeremy brett playing sherlock, he has some strange accent , anyone knows from which place? he pronouce the R in a very strong way

  • @lorenzothekid

    He was from Berkswell, Warwickshire.

Brett was born with a speech impediment, "rhotacism", that kept him from pronouncing the "R" sound correctly. Corrective surgery as a teenager, followed by years of practising, gave Brett an enviable pronunciation and enunciation. He later claimed that he practised all of his speech exercises daily, whether he was working or not.

  • sherlock holmes was a cocaine addict, not some morphine or heroin crackwhore as show in this movie picture.

  • No he wasn`t ! He used cosaine when ( 20% mixture) he was working and morphium (10% mixture) when he wasn`t. Read the books and you`ll find out(all drugs were injected!) So maybe you are right he was a junkie. But then agaian coke was used in coca-cola until 1933! So ?

  • I always must laugh too when Holmes laugh!!!

  • I love the intro music :)

  • Me, too!

  • "And how is the dear wife?" "I'm not married, Holmes." "How wise!"

  • did people really used get a dressed up for dinner every night?

  • @wadyano it depends on your class/status and means (money). It also depends on the situation at hand, if its a party for instance or they are going out to eat.

  • Comment removed

  • yes they did. it was event, regardless of the particular day. it was called 'evening wear'

  • i love this story. i love the locatios

  • i luv Jeremy ....though i liked the earlier watson ..now who was he.....

  • David Burke

  • Cocaine is a hell of a drug

  • fist laugh of the day

    thanks from Denver CO

I think playing bball with prince may be

the funniest sketch Ive ever seen

  • 8:00 Holmes is wasted. Watson caught him snowballing in his room. That'll take care of a cold.

  • anyone notice that jeremys r's are quite prominant? in other episodes, they werent as much. i know that jeremy had a r problem, so did i, but in this one they seem much more noticable than in others . . . . .

  • Jeremy Brett had rhotacism, which caused his trouble pronouncing his "R"s. He had corrective surgery as a teenager, and practiced his speech exercises daily, whether he was working or not. Hence his enviable pronunciation and enunciation.

  • thank you so much for posting this I love this series and love watching it. Thanks a million!

  • My dad and I used to watch these back in the day! They are just as good now as then!

  • "The house is freasing, Watson" , Lol.

  • People from this era would probably heartily agree.

  • A schoolmaster who became a butler...that's rather a step down in the career ladder. Whatever it was that happened to Brunton must've been very bad. Going "into service" as it was called, was one of the last respectable occupations you could do, if you were down on your luck.

  • LOL Holmes is higher then a kite..poor watson

  • i studied ''The adventures of Sherlock Holmes'' and ''The memories of Sherlock Holmes,,

  • What an extraordinary house, with that moat encircling it. Wonder where it was filmed?

  • It's very childish of Holmes to laugh at another man.

  • What Watson has to go through...

  • whats with the random giggleing at 07:44?

  • I would think that its because he's pretty wrecked after his "dosage".

  • let me set you right my dear fellow its crutch

  • Aluminum crutch or crotch?

  • LOL!!

    Crutch.

  • Good God Holmes!

How much cocaine did you use today!?!

    XD

  • They changed the violinist who plays in the intro several times...this one sounds much better than the others.

  • Or else remastered it.

  • Was Holmes a cocaine or a heroin addict? Which one was it?

  • Holmes used cocaine and morphine.

  • @DernWraithslayer @2:30...slowly slowly going

  • @DernWraithslayer I knew he used cocaine but not morphine. How did he take that? Do you remember which story told about that? Thanks for posting Dern. :)

  • @Songsmirth Actually, you get both from this quote:

'"Which is it to-day," I asked, "morphine or cocaine?"

He raised his eyes languidly from the old black-letter volume which he had

    opened.

"It is cocaine," he said, "a seven-per-cent solution. Would you care to try it?" '

    -Sign of Four

As far as I know, there is no actual scene in which he is shown using morphine. But Watson here implies that he does.

    You're welcome :)

  • @DernWraithslayer Thanks D! Your comments are always interesting. :)

  • @Songsmirth der r many stories in the initial cases of holmes where it is mentioned he took cocaine injections

  • he's the reason I smoke

  • how pethetic..

  • he's also the reason I'll never marry

  • hahah can't you think of something yourself? wannabe,,

  • At least he can spell 'pathetic'. Holmes is awesome :P

  • ofcourse he is awesome buth i think its not that "awesome" to copy some one habits just because you think thats cool..

  • Too late, I've already copied him

  • What is "pethetic" is your spelling!

  • @pratyah he was a cocaine addict as it is mentioned in memoirs of sherlock holmes

  • 6:32

Holmes: "And how is the dear wife?"

    Musgrave: "I'm not married, Holmes."

    Holmes: "...How WISE!"

    LOL Jeremy's the man!

  • Does anybody know when they started paying property taxes on these manor houses estates?

  • OHH the opening theme !!! such good show

  • This is one case where I like the episode better than the story X333

Holmes's laugh just kills me... It's brilliant!

  • *awkward pause*

    "Goodnight, gentlemen."

    "....HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!"

    O_O O_o

Ahhhhh, Holmes laugh puts Proffesor Moriarty's to shame! XD

  • Mr. Holmes is comfortably numb *evil grin*

  • ha Holmes goes on vacation to avoid cleaning his room!

  • i miss david burke

  • wow. the woman in the begining didn't waste her time.... O.O

  • I remember this episode, which was one of my favorites. Then again, the entire Sherlock Holmes series with Jeremy Brett was among my favorites. I can watch this with Clue, The Private Eyes, The 1949 Batman and Robin serials, and House On Haunted Hill that would have filled my days of mystery.

  • Sherlock Holmes saying that someone is pale(LOL) Now that the pot calling the kettle black!!!!!

  • LOL

  • yeah i see it too

  • they have such a great friendship it's great fun to watch

  • when was this filmed?

  • recherché

Sought out with care; choice. Hence: of rare quality, elegance, or attractiveness; peculiar and refined in kind — especially with an artificial or pretentious effect.

  • i was gna ask the same thing.. rishershay

  • What does he say when he's describing the "singular case of the Aluminum Crutch"-- "that was something a little..." what? Sounds like a French word, and starts with the letter 'r'. I couldn't make it out. He's so erudite!

  • In the book Holmes describes this very case (The Musgrave Ritual) as being "something a little recherché".

  • thanks a million mate...

  • Thank you so much for posting these videos. Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot are my favorite! Thanks a million!!!

  • no he's not gay. u fans should remember irene adler

  • people over interpret the character. holmes was turned on by nothing but science. conan doyle lived at a time when to write about a gay character would have got him banned.watson was twice married.

  • i don't think Holmes was a gay...he's the type of detective who's so fascinating that attaching a woman to his character would make him more human, because the portrayal of holmes is always like he's not normal, as in his geniusness and acute observation..that he's alot more than meets the eye( not the gay stuff, mind you)! Watson was also a mariied man too!

  • "Yes my boy" ha-ha(lol)

  • Thanks for uploading.

  • We are all bisexual to some degree or another...those who deny it are just fooling themselves. We are biological creatures and not binary machines with 1's and's...everything else is learnt behavior!

  • I love the intro music to these!

A few historians have stated Doyle wrote Holmes as having bisexual tendencies and hinted in a few stories of past relationships with men. While others state it was Watson. Very interesting. Personally, I haven't read enough of the stories to detect this, but I think it makes him even more interesting :)

  • I adore Sherlock Holmes!

  • au contraire -- there is enough evidence in the books to suggest he -- Well anyway. Good show.

  • Vraiment? NO provocation, I'm really curious... is Watson telling lies? In "Scandal" he describes Holmes not wanting emotional involvement, in "Devil's Foot" Holmes states he'd never loved... I like the idea of Holmes/Watson in love, love can have different faces. But does a man HAVE TO BE gay, when he doesn't want to sleep with women? I would not mind a gay Holmes. But re. a scientific approach to the canon I don't see evidence. Maybe I'm wrong? Then it might be interesting to be convinced :-)

  • @Nunewesen I personally agree. I dont think men or women have to be gay or lesbian if they dont want the opposite sex. The only evidence i can find is where watson says, "Holmes as a lover would have placed him in a false position" He was in love with science. BUT i recently reread the Dying Detective, and Holmes says "Hide, if you love me!" thats the only evidence i can find, other than Watsons servile attitude in the books, as well as Holmes masterful one. I think that Holmes wasnt gay, though

  • @sparrowgirl25 He's manipulating Watson in the Dying Detective - guilt tripping him into doing what is needed! And even if not, there is a friendship love, more commonly known as affection, but need we split hairs?

  • Funny how Holmes on arrival actually tries to "behave" and act like a normal, socialising human being... :-))

  • thats my last name how cool is that

  • because people are homophobic and believe it is wrong for Holmes to be gay!

    pitty them

  • Interesting house.

  • im doing this at school

  • Getting it on in a hayloft?

  • no the story :p

  • This part is different from the original story. In the original, Sherlock and Watson are at home and Sherlock starts narrating to Watson the story of the Musgrave Ritual. Nonetheless, I like this version as well.

  • That is right dude!

I remember reading this one. I believe Holmes tells the story to Watson. And the story happened before Holmes y Watson ever meet.

I think the other story without Watson is "The Gloria Scott".

    Am I right dude?

  • That's right. If I remember correctly, Holmes is telling the story of the Musgrave Ritual in order to distract Watson from "encouraging" him to tidy up the room. But I like it like it's shown here. Watson simply BELONGS to Holmes solving a case, don't you think?

  • No question about it. I admit that half the stories are Sherlock's genius and the other half are Watson's outrage! =))

  • "I wish I had notes on these cases."

    "Hmph" *thunkthunk*

XD I love that and when Holmes starts laughing.

"I remember on my last visit that he spent several hours explaining to me, in French, the origins of the picalo"

XD Another one of my favourites in the laughing part

  • Oh man, that was great! Thank you SO much for uploading! I too, think that the "I'm not married." "How wise!" Was hilarious! And when Sherlock Holmes is high and bursts out laughing...I swear I just cracked up. Man, how I love this show! Sherlock Holmes and Watson are great!

  • Yes, and I have no idea why you got six thumbs down for saying that.

  • " Splendid air:

    "*COUGH COUGH COUGH*"

That always kills me....how I love those men...!

  • How many of those tiny little notebooks do you think Watson filled up each time he and Holmes had an adventure?! They are so small!

  • Mr.Jeremy Brett is very famous for(as) Sherlock Holmes in Japan(Zipang).

I have often watched his program of TV in Japanese.

  • "And how is the dear wife?"

    "I'm not married Holmes."

    "......How wise!" Brilliant!

And Holmes laughing made me nearly fall out of my chair. You gotta love Brett.

  • Super - thanks a gazillion!

  • "You must be interested in the house, Holmes."

"Watson, the house is FREEZING!"....Then later, "Watson, we must behave ourselves."

Then he gets high. [Watson tries his best to cover.]

    Woops.

  • Loved this exchange:

"And how is the dear wife?"

    "I'm not married, Holmes."

    "How wise!"

  • maybe i'm putting a little more in it than your supposed to, but is'nt dear Mr. Holms not looking a little to interested in the butler?

  • Well, yes, not only can he foresee events, but he is high.

  • Yes, that gets me! :-) I am certainly not among those who (within the canon) believe Holmes to be gay (rather asexual imho). At least I have never found any evidence of it written by Doyle. But watching the way Holmes is eyeing the butler is priceless. Looks as if he's coming on to him...*gg*

  • i dont think he is gay either - in several of the stories holmes remarks on the beauty of various women. Furthermore, we must remember that at this period it is not seemly for the protagonist of such serious events to appear smitten by anyone. From my reading i get the impression that holmes once had a lover or interest at least. However your point about him abstaining or being asexual seems possible.

  • Holmes is so cute when he chuckles to himself. And how about at 7:51? Geez Holmes, he's not deaf. 7:55-8:16. Holmes looks creepy. 9:55 Watson turns blue!

  • yea prob coz he is as high as a kite!!

  • yes, that's because Holmes is high on cocaine during dinner.

  • 2:06 Well, hello...

  • I'm afraid I prefer Burke than Hardwicke.

  • Is it just me, or is the sight of Holmes wrapped in a fringed blanket enormously endearing?

  • No, it isn't just you. ;) Surprisingly "Poirot" of the old fellow.

  • O yeah, you are DEFINITELY right!

  • Holmes in a blanket is adorable.

  • Thanks a lot for uploading!

  • Thank you so much for this! Great job!

  • HA! love the mad uncontrollable laughing :)Thank you for posting this DernWraithslayer!
