I simply love Caballe, and always will do for her intelligence, her musicality, her pianissimos , her voice, her legato and her phrasing. This is not her at her best, but everything I love about her plus a great personality is here. Just a thing, will people PLEASE stop making negative remarks about her size? It just shows how shallow some of you are, and also with the Callas comparisons and the criticisms that she's singing flat when people half her age have sung much flatter than this.

@athensnews you mean of course callas' bad achievements..then yes. The purity of caballe's voice is something that callas' squecking voice would not achieve in millenium. But when it comes to acting and expressing the aria/song then i would say Calla is/was godly, i think the best actress among sopranos.

I don't care what who thinks who is better at what aria. The fact that Montserrat was singing this well at 71 (!!!!!!) is a heck of an accomplishment within itself.
It's too bad that the quality of this sound is so very poor. I am amazed at this 71 year old woman's strength and clarity of voice. It's truly beautiful and I will look around for a better recording of it.
there will never be complete agreement, everyone hears in a different way and what is beautiful to one will be the opposite to another! I adore Caballe and to me her voice thrills at any age. in her youth she truly deserved the title la superba and even into later and then old age she retained the magic which is star quality, the voice may not have the supreme control of the past but her expression and warmth remain, and she can still float those beautiful soft notes, brava Montse!

Bocelli isn't an opera singer, he is a pop tenor, as far as opera goes he isn't considered anywhere close to the level required for singers who sing in top opera theaters even today. He's not a good comparison. As to opera singers, there have been great opera singers who were/are slim e.g. Mario del Monaco or Franco Corelli. As to sopranos, there were slim sopranos too e.g. Rosa Ponselle; many today's sopranos are slim.
Caballe called herself " small " compared to Callas. Those were her words. She worshipped Callas. Caballe is a great soprano, but unless you are prepared to challenge the BBC's naming of Callas as " THE GREATEST SOPRANO OF ALL TIME " , I guess you have to STFU, and suck it up!!!! LMAO! I don't care what who thinks who is better at what aria. The fact that Montserrat was singing this well at 71 (!!!!!!) is a heck of an accomplishment within itself.

It's too bad that the quality of this sound is so very poor. I am amazed at this 71 year old woman's strength and clarity of voice. It's truly beautiful and I will look around for a better recording of it.

there will never be complete agreement, everyone hears in a different way and what is beautiful to one will be the opposite to another! I adore Caballe and to me her voice thrills at any age. in her youth she truly deserved the title la superba and even into later and then old age she retained the magic which is star quality, the voice may not have the supreme control of the past but her expression and warmth remain, and she can still float those beautiful soft notes, brava Montse!

Caballe would still be amazing even if she sang the aria entirely off key and with no breath support at all lol. At 71 she simply has nothing to prove...However, this is beautiful. Brava, Caballe!

@domineilluminatio I think you are generalizing based on wrong comparison. Bocelli isn't an opera singer, he is a pop tenor, as far as opera goes he isn't considered anywhere close to the level required for singers who sing in top opera theaters even today. He's not a good comparison. As to opera singers, there have been great opera singers who were/are slim e.g. Mario del Monaco or Franco Corelli. As to sopranos, there were slim sopranos too e.g. Rosa Ponselle; many today's sopranos are slim.

Caballe called herself " small " compared to Callas. Those were her words. She worshipped Callas. Caballe is a great soprano, but unless you are prepared to challenge the BBC's naming of Callas as " THE GREATEST SOPRANO OF ALL TIME " , I guess you have to STFU, and suck it up!!!! LMAO! @hammer55292 -Funny that,because Callas said that everyone was aware that Rosa Ponselle was the very best. She included herself in the everyone. Greatest of all time is truly a stretch.She was a great singer,but not a great voice by any standard. Great emotion and acting for sure.Caballe was far better vocally,and Sutherland had a much better voice,but horrendous diction.Most authorities such as Toscanini and Serrafin called Caruso,Ruffo,and Ponselle as the three unquestionable best.

@paulostroff99 OK, but the BBC is the final authority. Yes, Callas did say Ponselle was the best voice. So what?? When the BBC determined the GREATEST soprano of all time, it was most likely based on MANY factors. They NEVER Said she had the best voice, they said she was THE GREATEST SOPRANO OF ALL TIME. I listened to some of Ponselle's stuff, and granted it was old recordings, but I listened for only two minutes, it was nothing to me. So, based on a panel of world experts, Callas is number one!

There are so many great opera singers but we are all stuck on callas, she was great but I personally, "personally" find her voice a bit rough. Cabelle here is devine at such a mature age! bravo!

They had more knowledge in their little fingers than you in your whole body. Who really cares whether Caballe or Callas were better or not -they were all great.Being a great opera singer is more than having just a great voice.There were some others with greater voices-but not greater singers.
