okay i know archie doesn't appear much in this scene but just watching the rest of this episode and retiribution, does anyone else notice how much archie kennedy has changed since the last espisodes? i guess some years must have passed but what about all his 'issues' and 'tendancy to panic' and all that? i strangely miss the more troubled archie. he's suddenly become this rather bland (but still cute) sidekick.
His seizures were caused by the abuse he suffered at the hands of Mr. Simpson. We can probably infer that Archie's life was somewhat rehabilitated by Hornblower and service aboard the Indefatigable. His life could only be looking up after promotion to Lietenaunt and transfer to a ship-of-the-line.
I think his life is still riddled with some issues though, such as his voice being the prime one calling for mutiny. Perhaps his turn around went to his head and he became too cocky?
He doesn't win all the time, matter of fact his record isn't that good, lost the two ships captured that he was put in charge of (so far) Lost the girl, lost the invasion. true he escapes more times then not, but not allways on a positive note. besides then there wouldn't be any more books LOL.
'Most people say a hero is a guy who lays down his life for his country. MY definition of a hero is the guy that makes the other poor dumb bastard lay down his life for HIS country'
Gen. George S. Patton on taking over the 5th Army in North Africa after the slaughter at Kassarene Pass.
i really liked the first instalment but they become more and more ridiculous with every episode. Hornblower always somehow manages to escape with the skin of his teeth. Its more like Indiana Jones -
we'll see what this one is like. Maybe Hornblower defeats an entire french fleet with a rowing boat.
I know what you mean. I was really sucked in by the first one, as Hornblower was an outsider/underdog who ended up winning respect. As time goes by he becomes a kind of seafaring superhero. :p
Love this series. The music is basically amazing (my cousin and I like to sing it and be all dramatic), but I can't find it anywhere. I like this series better than the Sharpe one or Master and Commander.
I like Sharpe, but prefer Hornblower, who is more simpatico, shy, especially with women, but masterful when necessary though never cocky. However. Master and Commander is a masterpiece that will become a naval classic like
Charles Laughton's Mutiny on the Bounty, It is of consistently higher quality than S. or H.,which is understandable in view of its much higher budget and very much shorter running time..
Well, some discussion of history is only natural here since it is, after all, a fairly historically acute show (or meant to come over as such, I'm not going to argue on that point) and it's topic is a pivotal point in history. As for Vietnam, the South ..tyrants ? What silly bastard told you that ? There were no "re-education camps" and no killing fields, no slaughter by disembowlment in front of your family and village for failure to pay "rice tax" to terrorists..That would be the actions of North Vietnam. Communists bastards ....you think the South were tyrants...go live in a Communist country and see what tyranny is !
The tyrants were the South, backed by tyrants here at home and in Rome. The Catholic Dictatorship in S. Vietnam - for such it really was - was simply another thrust of Romes world wide Inquisition and all forms of Catholic Totalitarianism - given differing colors of "fascist" and "communist"...but differing not one whit in end result.
The same thrusts are occuring here, and now, under the pretext of anti terrorism.
Gucho...unless you have seen war, or had a terrorist kill a family member, or lost the same to despicable tyrannies like Germany and Japan...you are ignorant of what America fights for !
america openly fights for democracy while failing to be a true democracy urself, moreover you talk of tyrannies such as germany and japan i accept that but what about the vietnam war?? as i recall it was the south that were the tyrants there. America fights for wealth and power under the guise of democracy.
Even politics was much more honest at that time, it was more legitimate, the british were an empire, they accepted they role as empire, and functioned like an empire, they openly acknowledge their intentions, now we have americans that fight wars for "democracies sake", and manage themselves like an empire but they dont openly acknowledge it.
As an American who majors in politics, I hate that we fight as you said, "for 'democracy's sake'" but we do openly acknowledge it in our founding documents. The British Empire could be seen as much worse, just read Rudyard Kipling's "The White Man's Burden".
In or due respect to your argument, why is it necessary for you to state that you major in politics??? It does not add weight to your argument! Arguments need reasoning not a résumé
The fact that I major in politics is important because a large majority of Americans make statements about our politics and policies without knowing their facts or having anyway to back up there ideas.
My reasoning is that Americans say that they are doing things for "democracy's sake" but honestly, when looking at the G.W. Bush years it seemed like he and/or Cheney had a personal stake in matters of international affairs.
I find Britain to be worse or equal to the US. Because of "The White Man's Burden" but also because of the way the conservative party has acted throughout the years. Look at the horribleness of war with the Zulus or the stronghold they had over Indian for so long.
Three weeks ago, during questions with the Prime Minister, David Cameron said (in not so many words) that if the UK gets themselves out of this economic down turn speedy & well then the UK has a shot at being a major world power again.
The show is called "Questions with the Prime Minister" in America it airs every Wednesday morning at 7 am on CSPANN.
David Cameron is, of course, the head of the conservative party, and as I previously stated was simply commenting to the Prime Minister, along with the other MP's of the opposition.
You said it 'back up there(sic) ideas' and 'knowing their facts', if one can back up their arguments with solid and well informed arguments than it does not matter if he is a garbage collector, a 20 yr old undergraduate with a major in politcs or Winston Churchill himself.
I actually agree with some of your points. It just irks me that you feel it necessary to state your a politics major thinking it adds creed to your argument, cause it does not. I studied Engineering and that does not make my political opinions any less valid than yours or the next guy.
Point taken, I guess it is a snobby (and somewhat rude) thing to do. I get that it doesn't really matter, especially since my dad's my closest chum on politics and he's in computers.
Well, at least now that I've further explained myself you hopefully do not think me to be a total ass.
