  • This runs on nitro-methane .......

  • @madjimms no, this runs on a mix of kerosene and oil and cetane booster. If it ran on nitro-methane, you would need a glow plug. Please look carefully,, do you see a glow plug ?

  • @hopeso acetane booster? what is that?

  • @madjimms not acetane,,, CETANE booster. Cetane rating is the tendency for a fuel to ignite by compression alone. The addition of a small amount of a chemical that raises the cetane level by a bit is the idea. But cetane booster is a mis-nomer. The material actually initiates ignition chemically. Amsoil makes it, it's octyl nitrate.

Ether is the real cetane booster.

  • @hopeso I had no idea, very informative! Can you run this in a vehicle (very shortly)?

  • @madjimms Well, this hybrid, experimental is a one of a kind, proof of concept engine. I was hoping the original manufacturer would take me up on the offer of accepting this sample and making more of them just like it. I haven't given up hope on that so I won't risk losing it or breaking it by flying it.

  • @hopeso Well, I meant the fuel :-P

  • @madjimms yes, I have run this on some of my other, diesel conversions. I can't post a link here but do a search on Google Video for MiniSport Norvel and you'll see a plane I designed for a Norvel engine, diesel conversion.

  • @hopeso I know of some guys who add ether to race fuel 80% nitro, to get a little more RPM , tricky and hard on glow plugs

  • @kamphwagon1 na it is no problem

i have diesels that are normal glows with a diverent fuel setting

runs cheap runs smoky and if the engine gets hot enough it will continiu running

  • @robot797 I was talking about adding ether to nitro glow fuel , pylon racers usually run all nitro with the recomeded amout of oil , engine manufactures varry on the on the % of oil to fuel some 15% some 20% Picco recomends 15% for normal use and 10% for profesonal use , what ever that meens,I'm gusseing there refering to a high nitro mix,as you consume more fuel and oil as nitro precentages increase.

  • @kamphwagon1 Wow are people still flying old Formula one Pylon?? High nitro and mini pipes!!

FAI Pylon[F3D] is FAI fuel 20% Castor and 80% Methanol - Burns faster than nitro for more RPM on a full pipe and Castor oil is better in extreme conditions.

  • @tomview1 Well I haven't been around any of those guys in a while so I couldn't say for sure , Picco has a specal head button & plug for nitro in for their tether car engines . Geting high RPM has always been a problem with nitro, the fuel drag boys used to add a little hydizene, untill it was outlawed, now all of them are running 2 plugs per cylinder, before nitro was like haveing a governor, lots of HP but RPM stoped at around 7,500 untill a extra plug was added.

  • @kamphwagon1 Mmmmmm, the days of Chemicle fuels!!! I remember well - Like mixing teamrace fuel in the boot of a car, getting high off amyl nitrate!!

That button head also works a treat for FAI set ups too - the flat element makes for a nice even burn throughout the combustion chamber. Is it the "glo bee" plug?

Top fuel drags - it's all over in 4 seconds - you don't want it to last longer!!

    Cheers

  • any idea on how i could make a weed trimmer run diesel?

  • LOL. Kind of a round about way to explain diesel combustion to people. The only difference between a regular diesel engines and what you are doing is that you are flowing a fuel/air mixture, where other diesel engines intake air only and inject the fuel into the hot compressed chamber.

  • Captain,

I'm not trying to explain diesel combustion per se, in this clip.

Model, diesel engines use an adjustable contra-piston to alter the compression ratio, as is required to do, when you go to start a cold engine.

That's the very significant difference between a two stroke, model, diesel engine and a full size diesel engine.

But you're right, diesel engines, both two and four strokes, rely on compression alone to initiate combustion,,,, no spark plugs in sight.

  • Have you ever tried tvo tractor vaporizing oil in these?

  • nice suff

  • i dont get it, someone explain? so diesels can run solely on compressing air? and not burn diesel?? huuuh?

  • Model diesel fuel, traditionally contains kerosene (diesel), ether and oil in various proportions.

It was conventional knowledge that a model, diesel engine HAD to have ether in the mix to run.

This series has proved that that is NOT the case. It's not possible to HAND START a model diesel without ether but with an electric starter and the addition of applying heat to the engine, a model, diesel engine WILL start and run on a no ether fuel. Just kerosene and oil.

  • oh i see, thanks.

  • oooooh could i start it on nitro?

  • how high do these little guys rev?

  • rpm???

  • cool

  • Wonder if it would run of peanut or vegtable oil .

  • petrol cars use a spark plug which constantly sparks to ignite the fuel, diesel and nitro model engines use glow plugs, which heat up the chamber and burns the fuel, eliminating the need for constant heat

  • Partly correct. Glow fuel powered (nitro) engines require a glow plug.

Model DIESEL engines do not. They only require that the compression ratio be adjusted to match the diesel, fuel formula used. This is done by using an adjustable contr-piston. Notice the adjustment, T-Bar on this engine. No glow clip attached to start.

  • diesel engines use glow plugs to start the engine... after that its all compression

  • in cars and trucks yes.. not in model diesels(they're anyways not diesels, they're just called so)

  • I need a small four stroke diesel.

Where do I search? Thanks anyone...

    'dominantholdings at usa dot com'

  • Enya makes a small four stroke diesel but it's a bit of a hybrid. It does not use variable compression to affect optimal combustion. I believe they have you play with the fuel formula to make it work. Do a search for Enya Diesel.

  • Thank you for your assistance.

I did go to there website and had a good look around-- and it is amazing what's available for so few dollars.

My project requires an engine about the size of a Volkswagen Passat diesel.

And my intention is to identify a range of choices based on output, size, reliability, price, and availability (for more engines in the future)

    Any suggestions?

  • Warren,

Sorry, I'm a very small engine guy. But I'm willing to bet that the Chinese have something. Do a search for a Direct, Chinese export website.

  • Whoa! don't get your finger too close to that! :P

  • Yes, two stroke, diesel engine.

  • 2 strokes??

  • love that sound it stays in the blood hay good clip motor runs nice
