awesome I got to meet Rickson once in Tenn, I am actually in the association under Brown Belt Rep Scott Naugle in Columbia MD. I am a blue belt with a purple bar currently. We just had Chris Saunders out from Cali to do a seminar and belt test, I cant wait til we are big enough to have Rickson out

@astrongword Actually that's a red & black belt not a red belt he's wearing. It may be a long time before we get to see him with a 9th dan red belt. In BJJ you have to have at least 48 years as a black belt and be a minimum age of 67 before you can wear a red belt. Every 9th dan red belt living or dead except one received their red belt at 67 or older. That one person I’m referring to is Rorion. Helio promoted him to 9th dan red belt at age 51. Helio was 90 at the time so that could be why.

@barrettokarate you dont have to be any age to get any degree of black belt,youre referring to the ibjjf rules,helios side never abided by that,thats why rorian got his at 51 and ryron is now a 5th dan when he should be 2nd or 3rd at most,not that grades above black mean anything.

@fightculturevision its not a red belt its a black and red,red is for 9th and 10 th only.It also means absolutely nothing about ability,you get it after being a black belt long enough no matter how bad you are.Anyone getting it would be at least 50 years old.The only belt that means anything in bjj are up to black.

@yuenj01 kind of, u can have someone higher certify it, or you can just have the ibjjf do it, either way is legit.

Hi @billysue2 , I'm Brazilian and you were right in a few of your explanations and wrong in some others. The black and red belt is for those who get to teach BJJ for 31 years after promoted to a black belt. The read belt is just for those who are teaching for at least 48 years. The 10th degree read belt is just for Helio, Gastão, Carlos, Carlson and George, or as known the Gracie Master Brothers.

You won't get the read and black just by getting the black, sitting and waiting for it, ok? Hugs.

The original 10th degree red belt Gracie brothers were not “Helio, Gastão, Carlos, Carlson and George.” They were Carlos, Oswaldo, Gastão Jr., George, and Helio. Carlson was Carlos’ oldest son and he was a 9th degree red belt when he passed away.
