REM covering 60s hits. Maybe Michael Stipe's attempt at winning back listeners after his disparaging remark against the Beatles - "those guys didn't mean a fucking thing to me".
When did Michael Stipe make those disparaging remarks about the Beatles?
Was it in an interview? Was he joking or being serious? Michael Stipe's big influence seems to be late 70s punk. That is the period of his musical birth.
@Doleafol - I looked for the exact quote from the exact source, but all I can find is people on music forums talking about what Stipe said about the Beatles. Which is -
"The Monkees and the Banana Splits meant a lot more to me -- and whoever did Yummy Yummy Yummy ..... all the Glen Campbell stuff .... I've always referred to the Beatles as elevator music ..... I've never sat down and listened to a Beatles record from beginning to end. Those guys just didn't mean a fucking thing to me."
It was in the 1990s, I don't know what year. He wasn't kidding. He was being serious. And, he DID say it, because when he said it, he was all over the news. I remember that. And I also remember that was a turning point in how I've thought about Stipe since, which is, I think he is a self-important prick.
Ringo Starr's witty reply I loved: "If it weren't for the Beatles, Michael Stipe would still be taking the stairs."
Wasn't it about then that REM's CD sales took a plunge? I think it was.
I would think that Michael Stipe would have liked something from the Bealtes mid 60s psychedeilc period (songs like Paperback Writer, Rain, Love You To, And Your Bird Can Sing, Strawberry Fields Forever, Blue Jay Way). These are R.E.M. songs before there was R.E.M.
It was a joke about the song Michele that they played constanting on the radio while he was living in Germany with his family. From an interview heiindicated that Michele is one of his favoirte songs (look at his top 10 favorite songs on the internet). Michael was born in 1962 so the 70's were not the period of his birth, perhaps his youth.
Ok,this confirms it.All of you people who claimed you were too cool for John denver are rotten liars.I'm finding a lot of people who'd you'd think would be too 'sophisticated' to be fans are coming out and showing they know all the damn words to his songs. If REM aren't too hip to do Denver, then noone else should be ashamed of liking the guy.
Denver rules. We all know it.So there. Now,will you all quit pretending it's uncool to like him?

Sorry, no wait ... I'm NOT sorry ... if some 'local' not so famous average everyday person(s) did this it would be considered a disaster train wreck.

Anyone who ever thought that John Denver's music was uncool is sadly mistaken. I've liked his music since I can recall listening to music.

John Denver was/is awesome. His music is wonderful. But you know this. It is a shame that anyone would ever have considered it "uncool".
