I think I'm dumb (HEY! NIRVANA REFERENCE!) asking this question, but was Cobain or any of the other guys into Monty Python, specifically at the time this song would have been written? Because the lyrics If she floats than she is not/A witch like we had thought makes it sound like it. Am I the only guy to notice that? Kickass song though! I'm so buying this album
Im a 14 year old girl,I hate justin bieber and kurt cobain is my hero.I hate how all these people fight on here.It seems like stupid ppl just click on these videos so they can prey on inocent fans becuz they thnk we're "gay for listening to tht stupid guy that killed himself" but u know,in the end to me it seemed like all kurt wanted 2 do was to have his sound out there for ppl to enjoy or maybe not.I just wanted to get that out there
LoL I remember my 14th birthday, mom, dad, sister, cousins giving me crappy gifts that I never asked for, faking the smile and the gratitude, then my GRANDMOTHER produces this CD from her pocket and says 'this is what the man at the store recommended...' as soon as I see the cover and read "In Utero" I go crazy, kiss her face and rush to my bedroom- epicness ensued
I'm not going to mention that corporate fag-cow monkey-fucking-whore-fucker that everybody seems so quick to name and spout off bullshit about. Yeah, uh, yeah, he represents the end of rock music as we know it because music businessmen realize that kids are fucking retarded these days and don't know how to listen to music. Instead, they realized if you put the sound of a bloody queef and shit being pushed into a dirty vagina on a CD...kids will buy it because they are stupid. Fuck you, baby shit
@whitestripeskid It's just that capitalism these days seems to be unregulated, and anyone can make a quick buck off of things that have no real material value in life. Advertising-generates only demand YouTube-guides pop culture in an oblong direction Stock market-merely a betting game of investment with money that has very little true material value and never trickles down to the people who need it Vlogging-mind numbing tedium that beneffits nobodys well being
fuck it, i'll be an attention whore. 1 person tried to have a father but found out he was a fag. colloquial bullshit aside, kobain writes some genius stuff
just dusted off the dust of my nirvana albums..............OMG cant believe i have forgotten about loads of these songs. nirvana - the band of a generation..END OF
i remember the day he died, was with a friend looking at a super rare huge east swell wrapping around rabbit island when "radio free hawaii" dj dave o'day broke it, then played "verse chorus verse", a hidden track on a compilation album called "no alternative". first time id heard it and could not stop listening to it for days once id bought the cd. an amazing talent kurt was. he shouldve soldiered on!
at 32 I can relate to the first 2 lines of this song all too well. Grew up on Nirvana, saw them once in Portland. Still and always one of the best bands of all time, I will continue to blow spekers to Nirvana until death. Wheather you like them or not, you can't argue with the footprint they left behind on the entire world. All you trolls, get off your ass and do something with your life, you weak, parasite, maggot fucks!
It doesn't matter if Kurt wasn't the greatest guitarist. It doesn't matter if he wasn't the greatest singer and it doesn't matter if he killed himself. His music is more emotionally and spiritually charged than almost anybody who came before or after. The vibe and sincerity with which he wrote and performed places his music as some of the most important artistic statements of the 20th century.
knowing what it means",but he wasn't someone who was basking in his fame and lapping it all up, sorry, I'm drunk and deleted something I wanted to say because of youtube's annoying comment rules. You can say you loved the guy, but if he cared about his fans that much he wouldn't have done it....
Hi, to be honest with you, I'm not sure, I'd never call my self a true nirvana fan, but have to realize this guy kinda hated life, and hated fame, if he loved his fans, why would he blow his head off with millions of people looking up to him, wouldn't you think he'd hang on for them...... I know you wanna call yourself a real fan, and you probably are, but this guy wanted to be real, probably to the point of demerit, but listen to know the song about where he talks about the fan " not
lol, cool comment by grungeobsessed, curt actually didn't like his fans or his fame because he wanted to be "real", or at least he didn't think they understood him, and hated being really popular, he put out this album to turn off his mainstram fans..... Anyway, I agree with your comment about youtube people, if you don't like the music don't watch it and don't criticize it, do fucking something else, GBU
I saw you guys fighting and all I have to say is that MAYBE Kurt just wrote random stuff, but is US who give meaning to this songs. Is how you can relate to the music and what you here. That's Music's magic.

just to let you know, the actual writing of the song and melody was the prime focus of Kurt's writing, lyrics came afterwards and he didn't put that much effort into them. Really shows his talent that years even after his death, people are still finding unintentional meanings to his music, that or still bitching and arguing about what it could be about ;)
Im a 14 year old girl,I hate justin bieber and kurt cobain is my hero.I hate how all these people fight on here.It seems like stupid ppl just click on these videos so they can prey on inocent fans becuz they thnk we're "gay for listening to tht stupid guy that killed himself" but u know,in the end to me it seemed like all kurt wanted 2 do was to have his sound out there for ppl to enjoy or maybe not.I just wanted to get that out there because who cares what people think we like nirvana so what
@grungeobsessed i know right, why can't people just listen to their own shit, and leave other people alone. I mean, i do hate some artists and musicians, but i don't go to their videos and complain 24/7
i stick to what i like and i DO enjoy it.
i'm 13 years old and even i know "hating" (or whatever dumb word it's called now) won't affect anyone in the slightest bit if they are truly in love with someone's music. Nirvana is one of my favorite bands and no one is changing my mind about it.
You have 14 and you xpress like if you had brain damage, you speak about yourself as if 14 y.old was a valid reason to be stupid, and that you and only you had the power to not be stupid...
@grungeobsessed you're different than other females (no offense) but most girls fall under the catagory of "sheep-le" like sheep they just follow the herd of mindless people (guys do it too) but I have respect for your individuallism and not being a screaming bieber loving idiot. He'll for sure come and go like all other bubblegum-pop-teeniebop-fags and you'll still have Nirvana to listen to, (which I'd say probably did more for music than anyone else did, that's just my opinion). Hit me back.
@nnnnnate Yeah, thanks for being sexist. Girls have a mind of their own. We don't all scream and freak out over Justin Fucking Bieber. I can't stand his music. I'm eighteen. Been listening for "real" music--which is a bullshit way to put it, by the way, because music is judged by the individual listener, and what is good or bad to me doesn't make it "real" or "fake"--since I was ten. I'm not unusual. Most of my friends are like that, too. Meet some new people.
@grungeobsessed only reason that people hate on people like us for listening to Kurt is cause suicide became such a "light" subject to bash on for certain teenagers. So the moment they find out people listen to a guy who killed himself, they go crazy with insults, when really they're the idiots for listening to a screechy little pre-pubescent kid.
@grungeobsessed i'm 14 as well and i've been listening to nirvana since i was around 11 and i have to say, i only met 1 person that liked Nirvana somewhere close as I did. What bothers me though is that everybody listens to these crap rappers and boy bands and it's fucking ridiculous. People are so trendy nowadays and judge everything by it's cover. It's sickening. No one looks at the canadian/black rich guy rapping like he's hood like he's dumb but they go against the artistic soul cuz he's old
@ThaMuzikFiend ok, and in a few years lets see how you feel about this music still
I love nirvana, and always have, but it bugs me when people are like "well im ___ years old and i hate all the new trends and i love nirvana im soooo cool"
chances are you will probably become a hypocrite of your own words
@tokersrule it's been a few years since i've started listening to Nirvana. I've went from rock to hip-hop lately but I always put Nirvana as my inspiration. I'm not doing it cuz it's cool. I love music a lot and I want to become a musician and Kurt Cobain is my main influence. I make hip-hop beats and grunge is my influence. Plus, by my comment i was sticking up for the dude. c'mon don't underestimate me. I can give a fuck less wut others think, ppl dislike my music but I still love Nirvana.
@grungeobsessed hi there! mr. cobain was an incredible musician and a complicated human being. and i know that you look up to him and admire the man and not just his music. but as a krusty old person (38) i must tell you that kurt did a stupid selfish thing when he shot himself that day. just hope you never consider suicide to be a viable option or solution to some seemingly in-surmountable prob. because kurt did it and was lionized for it. ok, thanks for lettin me babble!
@grungeobsessed What can people think of us? Nirvana were The Beatles of their generation, not just a grunge band a generation difining band, like all the classic bands Velvet Underground, Led Zep the who, the Doors! The Clash, The Smiths! Nirvana were primerliy a punk band! & Kurt Had Punk values thats why he hated being famous, Smart people who know what their talkin about could only think your cool for litsening to Nirvana! Who cares how he died he died a classic RocknRoll way like the greats
@grungeobsessed Why does it matter to you? I listen to Nirvana since I was 11. I don't care if younger or people my age have different taste in music, they should listen to whatever they feel like and I'll do the same.
@grungeobsessed You claim to be grunge obsessed. Do you know who Mudhoney, Green River, Screaming Trees and Mad Season are? Mother Love Bone? Or The Melvins? That's real, powerful grunge. Or do you just listen to Nirvana, Hole, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, and--dear God--Stone Temple Pilots? Expand your horizons, as well. Did you know Kurt Cobain loved hip hop? He loved John Lennon's and The Beatles, too. And for future reference, if you want to be taken seriously, use good grammar.
@BlossomingFreak Melvins are more sludge, aren't they? Pearl Jam is hardly considered grunge in my book. I never got into Mother Love Bone. Kurt Cobain also loved Screaming Trees (he had an obsession with their song 'Polly Pereguin'). Kurt himself predicted that hip hop would turn to shit in a few years, and it did.
To me, nirvana's lyrics aren't as much about deep intellectual poetry as they are about simple thoughts and emotions fully explored with metaphors and really clever word/ phrase choice, and for the most part they are vague lending themselves to interpretation and therefore evoke a sense of ownership to the songs, especially the lesser know ones.
yes i think this is a song about the media hounding him and teenage agnst has paid off well now im board and old to me hes saying smells like teen spirit paid off now hes sick and bored
I was born in 1994. in about 1 year and three months I'm gonna send this song to my dad and live a meaningful life. The fucking hell away from all of these control issue people.
@101gamecock theyre the one in the same commercialized packaged over produced junk food for the ears sold to the masses, , nirvana just won the lottery, it was a time when big labels and radio was affraid to take the plunge and for harder tunes to be mass sold, , they were just there at the right time , 80S HARDCORE PUNK AND METAL ,
what kurt means by his lyrics being meaningless is that they're meaningless to everyone else who reads them. Kurts lyrics werent meaningless to him though
@RandomVideos7818 I would too. I suspect that most people who heap praise on Cobain's lyrics are just being sycophantic. Nirvana's lyrical content isn't what drove them.
No meaning? totally the opposite most of his songs have multiple meanings, and actually if you listen most of "In Utero" songs like (serve the servants, Scentless..., Rape Mr, Frances Farmer, Very ape, Milk it, Radio Friendly and all apologies, you'll listen that, their all most about he wanting to leave the music business or he wanting to kill himself, (however you wish to see it) but he was pretty much saying good-bye that he had enough!
@interpretop To "over-interpret this would be to say something like " its about how we all have problems in life but sometimes our inner self can get us out into an new world that's actually inside us :O that's so deep!!..." or some shit like that... this does have a meaning, Said by Louise Carroll (I think) even the most crazy dreams have a meaning, something inside you something you like or stuff, made you imagine the seeming nonsense!... and I just said it clear he says "I've had enough!"
@beAVENeasy It does have meaning. I've heard two possibilities as to what it is. It could be about one of his friends being raped or the one I think is real - its about the news and reporters and such just tearing him apart and it was making him depressed but then ended up enjoying it so he's asking for it again. Which relates to the lyrics from it: "Rape me....rape me again."
@innisjohnston I know im thats what im sayin its about everything the industry obviously......Im sure he had a personal meaning....but kurt pushed buttons he was always asking for more
@innisjohnston Actually Kurt commented to a question pertaining to the song rape me. Kurts reply was "Its an anti rape song, hippy". haha Kurt was funny.
Those who do not understand their songs, don't know anything about Nirvana and Kurt . If they think so, they should read the biography of Kurt , maybe than they'll understand what he wanted to say, because every song is special and deep, you just have to feel it !
Like, listed under Related Videos, right there, are largely the more polished and engineered tracks (along with a couple oddities, in there, for good measure).
Hit things Here She Comes, and stuff, and Related Videos are largely comprised of rarities, like outtakes and such.
How the hell does YouTube sort things this way? Who programs this sucker?
why would you disable embedding @NirvanaGrunge87

I'm not unusual. Most of my friends are like that, too. Meet some new people.

@grungeobsessed only reason that people hate on people like us for listening to Kurt is cause suicide became such a "light" subject to bash on for certain teenagers. So the moment they find out people listen to a guy who killed himself, they go crazy with insults, when really they're the idiots for listening to a screechy little pre-pubescent kid.
XRulerOfHellX 5 months ago
@grungeobsessed i'm 14 as well and i've been listening to nirvana since i was around 11 and i have to say, i only met 1 person that liked Nirvana somewhere close as I did. What bothers me though is that everybody listens to these crap rappers and boy bands and it's fucking ridiculous. People are so trendy nowadays and judge everything by it's cover. It's sickening. No one looks at the canadian/black rich guy rapping like he's hood like he's dumb but they go against the artistic soul cuz he's old
ThaMuzikFiend 5 months ago
@ThaMuzikFiend ok, and in a few years lets see how you feel about this music still
I love nirvana, and always have, but it bugs me when people are like "well im ___ years old and i hate all the new trends and i love nirvana im soooo cool"
chances are you will probably become a hypocrite of your own words
tokersrule 4 months ago

I don't care if younger or people my age have different taste in music, they should listen to whatever they feel like and I'll do the same.
clandestiny01 3 months ago 5
@grungeobsessed Your age doesn't mean shit, there's older people out there with a shit taste in music too
HitmanJenkins1 2 months ago
BlossomingFreak 2 months ago 3
@BlossomingFreak Melvins are more sludge, aren't they? Pearl Jam is hardly considered grunge in my book. I never got into Mother Love Bone. Kurt Cobain also loved Screaming Trees (he had an obsession with their song 'Polly Pereguin'). Kurt himself predicted that hip hop would turn to shit in a few years, and it did.

0k0sMrHazard 1 month ago
To me, nirvana's lyrics aren't as much about deep intellectual poetry as they are about simple thoughts and emotions fully explored with metaphors and really clever word/ phrase choice, and for the most part they are vague lending themselves to interpretation and therefore evoke a sense of ownership to the songs, especially the lesser know ones.

what kurt means by his lyrics being meaningless is that they're meaningless to everyone else who reads them. Kurts lyrics werent meaningless to him though
MrBrownstone1994 11 months ago
Kurt said himself that his lyrics were meaningless. i would trust him.
RandomVideos7818 1 year ago 2
@RandomVideos7818 I would too. I suspect that most people who heap praise on Cobain's lyrics are just being sycophantic. Nirvana's lyrical content isn't what drove them.

oh you kids gotta calm down!
this isn't Motley Crew or Poison ya gotta remember.
"it's you crossword puzzle" don't read too much into his words.
listen to old 4 track recordings of Nirvana songs sometime, Kurt changes lyrics like I change my underwear.
he was the best and his words will live on with us but not everything he says if for us to interpret...
TheBubbles9 1 year ago
No meaning? totally the opposite most of his songs have multiple meanings, and actually if you listen most of "In Utero" songs like (serve the servants, Scentless..., Rape Mr, Frances Farmer, Very ape, Milk it, Radio Friendly and all apologies, you'll listen that, their all most about he wanting to leave the music business or he wanting to kill himself, (however you wish to see it) but he was pretty much saying good-bye that he had enough!
fsfsfsfsfsfsg 1 year ago 2
@fsfsfsfsfsfsg His songs had no meaning; that's just you trying to over-interpret it.
interpretop 7 months ago
@interpretop To "over-interpret this would be to say something like " its about how we all have problems in life but sometimes our inner self can get us out into an new world that's actually inside us :O that's so deep!!..." or some shit like that... this does have a meaning, Said by Louise Carroll (I think) even the most crazy dreams have a meaning, something inside you something you like or stuff, made you imagine the seeming nonsense!... and I just said it clear he says "I've had enough!"
fsfsfsfsfsfsg 7 months ago
@fsfsfsfsfsfsg Loved what you wrote. Louis Carroll. All that stuff. I agree.

RAPE ME has no meaning ........come on
beAVENeasy 1 year ago
@beAVENeasy It does have meaning. I've heard two possibilities as to what it is. It could be about one of his friends being raped or the one I think is real - its about the news and reporters and such just tearing him apart and it was making him depressed but then ended up enjoying it so he's asking for it again. Which relates to the lyrics from it: "Rape me....rape me again."
innisjohnston 1 year ago
@innisjohnston I know im thats what im sayin its about everything the industry obviously......Im sure he had a personal meaning....but kurt pushed buttons he was always asking for more

Those who do not understand their songs, don't know anything about Nirvana and Kurt . If they think so, they should read the biography of Kurt , maybe than they'll understand what he wanted to say, because every song is special and deep, you just have to feel it !
I just love them, and Kurt was really genius !

Man, YouTube's really incredible-
Like, listed under Related Videos, right there, are largely the more polished and engineered tracks (along with a couple oddities, in there, for good measure).
Hit things Here She Comes, and stuff, and Related Videos are largely comprised of rarities, like outtakes and such.
How the hell does YouTube sort things this way? Who programs this sucker?
Anyway, fucking fantastic site.
