  • difficult to make black/white judgments about McNamara. On the one hand he lied to Congress about the justification for war. On the other he grew a conscience in the end and realized Vietnam was a terrible idea. That being said he and Rumsfeld are definitely in contention for worst SecDefs of all time. He was not a dumb man. But he made some terribly destructive decisions.

  • Great film. A smart man, with a moral streak, which took hold too late. We are fortunate that we are left with this film.

  • "genius" and "brilliant" are not words I would use to describe McNamara ... "war criminal" and "slime" are a bit more like it.

Then again, I'm part of that group of "a lot of people" who think he's a "sonofabitch" (as he puts it himself)...

Oh, and another fitting word: tragic. He was gifted with great intelligence and ability, but served a corrupt military industrial complex that will likely destroy the world one of these days. "Sad" fits too... and "flawed."

Maybe "human" = best of all.

  • because people like him USA is sinking FASSSTTT (1~2 trillion wasted dollar iraq+afghan wars)....and today the sink is more faster than EVER...good job..

  • A great man.

  • We need more statesman like Mac and Kissinger!!

  • Brilliant Brilliant man

  • you're an idiot, plain and simple. we ignore cries for help ALL THE TIME. if it's not in our political or economic interests, you can bet those cries will go unanswered. this isn't about being "liberal"; this is about being informed, being ethical, and being prudent .

  • Great movie.

  • When i saw the monument, i felt that america was a selfish country indeed. for every name on that wall 60 vietnamese were killed with the majority being civilians.

  • RIP? Not likely. "His regret cannot be huge enough to balance the books for our dead soldiers. The ghosts of those unlived lives circle close around Mr. McNamara. Surely he must in every quiet and prosperous moment hear the ceaseless whispers of those poor boys in the Infantry, dying in the tall grass, platoon by platoon, for no purpose. What he took from them cannot be repaid by prime-time apology and stale tears, three decades late."

Anyone who doubts it, fuck you.

  • RIP Robert McNamara- from a GI

  • What about Darfur? Why enter in Iraque and not in Sudan? Is oil the diference?

  • Felipe: you are asking AND answering your own question. Of course the US invaded Iraq because of oil.

  • Of course it's the difference.

  • Oil, veto from China and Russia, Interest and power conflicts between the United States and the African countries. Also, Sudan do have oil as well. Just not as much as the Middle East. China at the moment is heavily involved in Sudan's oil industry.

  • What are you talking about? no one has said anything about liberals here and McNamara himself said we didnt fight in Vietnam for their independence but to fight the Soviets.

Stop making stuff up, stupid troll.

  • Anyone studying 20th century history and or specficaly the Vietnam conflict/Kennedy era should watch this as compulsory viewing. I also recomend Macnamra's book he wrote. This is all quality historical importance. Also, where are the leaders of today with the vision of a better world like this one.

  • I sooooooo wish Rumsfeld would do an interview like this.

  • @Revbone450 nooooo... rumsfield is actually a terminator, sent back from the future... just to be an asshole in general

  • @Revbone450 I think he did something similar with Aljazeera English.
