@elio367 try pushing the small button just under the EF-Bajonett Releaser, it will set the aperure to your current setting (if you are in AV or M) for more infos please have a look in the 5dmkII´s manual. Hope it works.
my aperture blades always open wide and only change when i press the shutter button and then it opens all out again. how do i make the blades close before i took the picture? the only way that works for me is by pressing the dof preview button...
@funnyguyindahouse Put your camera into video mode and make sure it's set to manual exposure. Otherwise, it won't work without pressing the preview button.
@chrisjmolina hi there, you cant really set the aperture during video recording, because it would result in a bucking chance of DOF and Brightness, it is not nice. Altough, if you change this setting befor recordning, the changes are similar to what you see here.
Can you please tell me, does 2.8 and 1.8 make a huge difference when taking night video?? I'm thinking about getting a new lens 50mm f/1.8 along with my f/2.8 zoom lens but I don't know if it will be worth it.
Nice, good info. I'll be getting a 50mm for my 7d when I have enough money. I have the 15-85mm kit lens which is good but I want to get a couple more prime lenses with a wider range of apertures. 15-85 will is f3.5-f22.
@obeasthead the exposure has no effect to the DOF, you can select the aparture you want for the best DOF effect and then chose your exposure to make your picture bright enough! :)
I am going to echo a couple of the other comments - this short, straightforward demonstration was a LOT more useful than all the text and graph explanations of DOF that I've read. Many thanks!
Why can't more people do demonstrations like this!!!!!!!! I always thought f/3.5 was "Good enough". After seeing your demonstration I see that f/3.5 is already so much smaller than what I expected! Thank you thank you thank you!
@TuRtel89 he changing the exposure to show u how it effects depth of field the shutter is changing to he can keep the picture at the same brightness level so u can see actual effects of exposure.
All of your photos are exactly the same exposure and when the camera moves towards f/22 on each stop less and less is coming through. how do you keep the same exposure while changing the aperture from f/1.4 to f/22?

This is great. Is there anyway you could do a similar video feat the differences in f-stops with video? That would be VERY helpful.
Thanks!! :D

xxbluejay21 5 months ago
@xxbluejay21 it is a huge diffrence, but is has pros and contras.
pro, you have a much bigger apperture, so you have more light
pro, you´ll have a much nicer DOF
contra, a low DOF will also give you a hard time focusing a moving object.

The exposure is not the same, it is changing from 1/4000 to 1/13, if you look the video again it is shown on the left side of your screen....
