Stunning book. I began on CD, had to give it back to the library. Get it on CD if you can the reader brilliantly breath life into the characters, Prubaker came to life. The voices in my head when I turned to print. A quibble Mr Roberts. Tolkien and Lewis were friends. Tolkien spun tales for the sake of the story. Lewis told stories to promote his worldview. You let Lewis seep in, that broke the stride of the tale and took it back to being just a book . Had to set it aside a while and come back.
i think i have read shantaram about 20 times! such a great book. everytime i read it, i find another pearl of wisdom. i even met gregg and he sighned my book!! if you havn't read it - DO SO!!!!!! thanks shantaram,
I read this book a few months ago - making sure there is some time before I read it again.........then repeat this process over and over again. I can never forget this book. Truly a masterpiece. I am still waiting for the movie. The only star of the movie (it it is eventually made ) will be the story for me.
Thankyou Gregory, I really loved your novel, in particular the philosophy. The part about the cosmos expanding to reach a God state, if only the religons of the world would focus on that. I felt your losses and your loves and I came to understand the importance of staying true, stubborn, to the basic rights that guide us all as people of this small planet. Thankyou.
Thank you for this wonderful book. I'm blessed with it and how it passionates me and how it moves me. I' am almost crying for knowin that a movie is coming out with stars as johnny Deep and Brad pitt producing and acting...! amorous passion, great book and it will be successful movie.
This book is fantastic. !! I read the architecture of the book from the shantaram website and I am now re-reading the book - I have it in audio, soft cover and hard cover.
I can sum this book up by quoting a couple of lines from it; "I was hers, she was mine. My body was her chariot , and she drove it into the sun." The book is filled with this drivel that sounds like a 13 year old wrote it... which is who I'm guessing is giving all the good reviews. The author looses the story by getting too caught up in his own long winded literary mazes.

His book's a tall tale. And if he wasn't such a crap writer, with overly-wordy descriptions of everything from Karla's eyes to his heroin addiction, the book would be 500 pages instead of 900. Interesting story, but written like a 15 year old. I'd been wanting to read it for a long time while on the road, but wouldn't recommend it. Thousands of better books out there than this shite.
im still looking for the book, quite difficult to get it in the country i live.its a small tropical island called mauritius.im dying to read that...anyone ...can i download it ??

I read your book and I have to say its one of the best i've ever read. Thank you for sharing your life. I wish my english was better so i could express what your book made me feel.
An incredible achievement, the fictional characters portray roberts philosophy and intellect in a profound way. Roberts emotional rollercoaster journey, comprises every human feeling, from the most gut wrenching physical and severe mental pain. To the most uplifting spiritual highs. Always an amazing, relentless adventure, inspirational writing.
yes I agree with most comments above. The book also made me understand why a person is driven to become a suicide bomber! A world we do know so little about. When reading the book I could smell the Bombay I knew in 1970. Not having returned since, only in my mind, I am surprised that the book stopped me wanting to go again! Alice
Wow....what a novel! Thanks to GDR for going through such an amazing journey and being able to tell it in such a touching way. My mind was tingling and reflecting as I flipped the pages.
I inherited this book whilst travelling around Thailand, from a girl who had spent many months in India and had fallen in love with the 'Indian heart'. Such a gripping read. The way Gregory writes, I could feel his hunger and suffering when incarcerated in the Indian prison system. I could feel the strength of his love of Karla....Amazing book, amazing man.
My father gave me this book, fantastic! a great great job and what a life!! Hope that the movie makes up to it! In fact, I didn't see Jhonny Depp as main actor but reather Russel Grove, or some more rude than is Mr. Depp. Chears!
my uncle who lives in austrailia gave me this book and it changed who i am an a great way.there is something about the way he writes,it really draws you in
there is a fusion of the physical and spiritual and the writer - resulting in Shantaram. An amazing book and a life so much larger than the ordinary life through transcending great physical and emotional pain to write the truth from the heart. Shantaram makes me see life, world, society and its evils in a new light as it is a book of great heart and soul as well as being an incredible adventure story.
Absolutely the best novel I have ever read in my life... I mourned the end knowing that a sequel is impossible. If only I could find another book this phenomenal.....

I say, let those haters hate, for the same reason they hate themselves. I, on the otherhand, have a deep love for this novel and anyone who reads this comment should really go out and pick up this book. To think I'm saying this after only reading half of the novel. Hater's are more than welcome to reply.. haahaha..
Why would I engage in an emtional relationship such as "hate" with a book, I do not care much about? Lovers and haters - that is what all people are? Your readers, Gregory. Think about it.
We know you're a superhero in real life already. As a writer he love the narrator of your novel too much. A novelist needs to keep a distance. The book's a plot-oriented adventure novel on the same stylistic level as Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code. So a total failure.
Since when does a novelist need to keep distance? Who made up that rule and could I please read your novel in which you prove your point as a writer? I guess in a world of high achievement a failure is probably not a bad thing, anyway...D.C.Gallin
So if that comment was directed to me, it's probably me who must try to read some sense into it. Ok. You are saying that in order to review novels one must be a novelist. That imo is dangerous nonsense. Do I have to sizzle in hot butter before I can rate a steak?
You can argue that technically the novel might lack sophistication. Comparing it to Dan Brown is ludicrous. The dialogue show a well tuned ear for the rhythm of human speech, his observation show a scrupulous pursuit of truthfulness, they provide insights which are original and enhance the range of human consciousness and experience. Calling it a total failure is a testament to your envy and your creative impotence.
"enhance the range of human consciousness and experience"
Dear Gregory,
these are your readers using language that could not be more ambiguous or pompous. Cluter everywhere. The next aphorism always lurking behind a corner nearby. Sounds familiar? Good Bye.
are you referring to this video? there's no term cluter in that..if it;s in his book, say what;s the entire sentence, i might be able to explain..i have the book but i'm only half way through..
i'm reading this book now, on the third chapter. Had to stop this video half way just in case!
Anyway, it is already one of the most engrossing books I have ever read. I wish I could write half as well as Mr. Roberts
