Rebirth was the only thing i could work and actually have a good time on. i wish there was a device like it that i could work on irl, instead of computer. you probably know the name of some devices that will let me create live music. with loops and stuff.
Hey, great Vid. Do the 909 / 808 samples come pre loaded in the MPC? Or do you need to load them yourself? Also, where do you suggest finding good funk sample stuff, as you used in the video. I myself, have got abelton a bunch on soft synths and a Juno 106. But I think the hardware just gives you something to 'play' unlike software. Any good tips on drum loop creation also?
you are probably full of shit mate/ why dont you show us how you make exactly the same pattern and swing feel in logic with no MPC. Face it MPC is well known for its swing and its 8 bit sound.YES the machine is crucial.
hey i'm seriously interested by the kurzweil k series, i want to make 92/95 garage house! what do you think about it? do you know those synth (k2500, k2000...)?
thanks i really like your channel, especially the video about the tx81z, by the way what synth would you recommend me between the dx100 and the tx81z?
You know i have been loosing sleep over the fact i like fruity loops so much. but like you said its what your comfortable with. Thank you for not only saving me money but from the let down i might have gotten if i spent a bunch of money on a mpc and didnt like it. I mean i got fruity loops for free why spend money on a mpc. thanks for your advice its truth. I am just going to work harder on using what i have.
Hey great video mate! I was wondering what the most reliable storage device you've found to work with the 2000 XL? I've lost a lot of my work going with the 100 MB floppies. Thought about upgrading to the 1GB adapter that I found online, but wanted to see what your thoughts were before I made a move. Cheers!
nothing adds warmth like running it line in. digital sounds digital because it is produced digitally. and that's okay... but there is no secret plug-in for logic that transforms software into hardware. or digital into analogue.
there are ways around everything though, if you're a true musician/producer/dj and you work hard/
amen to the roland 707, 808, and 909. also, amen to an mpc/sequencer/drum machine with a hard disk drive. what's the storage capacity on one of those things? hehe
is it down to the machines?....remember...YOU are the machine. i had an mpc, and made crap-out-of -tempo-crap because i couldn't bang the beat out right!! doh!! BUT....cred to the machines for the quality of sounds that come out of them...i mean the grainess or sheen that a sampler can give to your samples. but in the end, vinyljunkie is right. its up to you what you create, musically speaking.
but asides from softwares ability to emulate what you can do on the MPC dont forget your akai is build for the purpose of sound quality. they'll have to make a bit of an investment in good soundcard if they want to capture & export sounds to the same standard. (AD/DA)
i have a 200XL but i cant NEVER get my hats to swing and Shuffle like that... what swing settings do you use??? i set mine to 1/16 with swing set to around 54-57
i just demo'd the maschine today, its awesome, but yep you need the computer with you, which i dont get the opposition too... im a developer and engineer too, look, the mpc has an onboard computer written in C or C++ or java on the core compiler so who gives a shit if you haul a full production pc with you for your set? the power and the size of the screen are larger than the little LCD's, i dont get this purist bias...
hey guys can someone pm me / message me back , i really wnat to make house music , with a simple sample loop and beat but i want hardwar not FL i find it really hard to use and the best priced equipment too. thnx if anyone replys
Your too modest, that track makes the grade for old school house, great sample. Add side compression to it driven by a massively over compressed bass drum and you have a little French touch.
But yea, i agree with you completely, tools are all about workflow, find one that suits you. There isn't a 'magic' tool or should i say 'magic flute' that will make the music for you.
For example, you could make this track with an iPhone if you really wanted to...
It's old school because everything now is over compressed. I really dig this choon because it reminds me of the music that got me started in this business! Good work.
see that's just apoint of view. there's a lot of cheesy house out there but those swingin hats are just to cheesy to me. that's why i like guys like deadmau5. they keep it straightforward but barowue in a way.
I like what you said about learning your gear. I always used to chase the latest plugin, the latest software.
It's all about enjoying it. If you're a pro then fair enough but if you just want to dabble for an hour here and there it ain't worth it. Look how simple decks are and people have been creative with those for decades. Work with what brings you out of yourself.
would you send me the link for internal drive - can't seem to find one on ebay. 300? that was a steal. They seem to have grossly inflated over the last few years. I bought a Juno 6 recently and that cost me more than I expected to pay. But I guess that's the over-inflated ebay prices for you.
Oh I see. I've seen a few examples for around the 400 mark that come with the SCSI drive and expandable 32MB. would it be easy enough to just hook up the drive to my pc and drag the files over?
Yeah screw the SCSI drive it's annoying having to carry it about, you can fit a internal IDE cumputer ZIP drive to the MPC for about 5 quid from ebay and no messy cables then all you need is a USB zip drive to transfer the files from your PC onto the ZIP. Make sure you got the 8 outputs board and got the max ram (32mb) also make sure the screen is ok and is not pixelated or has lines appearing on it, check the pads too.
Greats vids btw. How do you get the samples on to the MPC? I understand that they can't read Wav? I've been looking at getting one myself, however I'm a little dubious for the above reasons
Every MPC after the 3000/3000LE can read wav's, with the latest OS the 2000 classic too, XL reads wav's as standard.
You get sounds into it by sampling from either digital in's/analogue with the sampler or you can transfer files from the PC via what ever you have fitted to the MPC be it Zip disk, CF card or floppy disk
I would have one again but have you seen the stupid prices?! There is a simmilar sound in the DX-7 but it doesn't sound as nice imo, I preffer the 100 as it sounds more dirty
Just wondering where the funk sample is from, as Ive got a house tune on the other side of a funky nassau white label that (I think) uses part of that sample!
By the way, have you released any of your stuff yet coz its wicked!
Advantage of synthesizing sound: You can form the cound you imagine. This requires know how or you can learn by trial and error.
There are learning resources on creating your own sounds.
If you want to use the sounds of drummachines like the 909 or 707 without owning them or using the bass sound from a funk record you can do so using a sampler instrument.
The actual sound is based on a recording then and can be tweaked a bit with filters (for sound color) and envelopes (for amplitude and pitch
man thanks for explaining the swing concept- just wish I had this a few years ago when I made tunes....BTW that groove you made sounds wicked!- release it !
very sneak sounding mate, thats pretty tasty actually, you should make a proper tune and send me it, id play it on my show on chicago house fm. hit me up on here dude and I will give you my msn
It's an Akai MPC-2000XL, the one I have also has fitted the optional 8 output board, 32Meg of ram, internal zip 250 drive and soon the FX board too (EB-16)
The basic machine only comes with a floppy drive and 2 meg as standard.

to get you started:
basic music programs are called sequencers or DAW (digital audio workstation).
for beginners i would recommend:
on PC: magix music maker, fruity loops, energy xt
on Mac: Garage Band, energy xt
sounds are generated either by synthesizers or by sampler-instruments.
both exist as hard and software.
as software they are added as plug-ins to your DAW (plugin standards: VST, AU, RTAS, DX).
Synthesizers generate the sound out of nothing. ... continued in next comment
cliffmannooo 3 years ago
hey Martin.
you`re making a very important point there: the machine doesn`t make the music. the musician makes the music.
that that means is :
creating any kind of art is not as easy as switching on the tv.
you need to get something original out of yourself.
that is work.
it involves but thinking about the creative process and many hours of producing material that you will be throwing away because its not good enough.
eventually you may find something great.
its worth it.
