One of the founders of the club was Fr Brady who had spent some time working in the state of Maryland in the US. He probably suggested the name due to the religious assocaiations i.e. Mary's Land. Maryland's home venue is named in his honour - Fr Brady Memorial Park.
Maryland is the name of the Gaelic Football Club for Drumraney Parish situated in the very middle of Ireland. I am from Galway myself, so I have no idea why they are called "Maryland" and not Drumraney. Anyone care to enlighten us?
