I had the exact same experience with my horse last month. It was heartbreaking when I left. I knew it was my choice, but I regret it now that she left and I don't know where she is. She was really my best friend and I miss her oh so very much. I was the only one who rode her (she only accepted certain people), which made her "useless" to my barn where I boarded her.
