Now this is what teaching should be all about. Inherently kind, gentle, funny and encouraging. Both Irena Orlov and the fantastic Elisso Wirsaladse are beacons for the rest of us to emulate. How I would love to have some lessons with Wirsaladse. I first heard her in Frankfurt in 1988 in Schumann (incomparable), Chopin etudes (technically and musically flawless) and a ravishing Mozart encore of K281 Romanza. It remains one of my top five recitals - up there with Richter and Gilels.
I have now looked at the Irena Orlov story four or five times and each time it never fails to move me with its humanity. For me to visit it has become like a sanctuary but not a sanctuary of solitude but peopled with kindred spirits. I am a poet and translator of poetry but came to Classical music rather late in life. More power to you Irena and to your students!
