Megan Fox and Heidi Montag are looked upon by women as ladies who try too hard. Nothing to do with beauty evolution as even in the 30s there were women who changed their looks for showbiz, died their hair, had surgery and lost weight to get parts.
The only thing that has changed is that these celebs are hounded on tv/Internet/social networks every single day whereas in the 30s the celebrity fascination was nothing NEAR what it is today.
wow, that scared the crap out of me for some reason. btw, was naomi campbell the only non-white woman to appear as a beauty icon, or did i miss someone? actually, interesting how naomi looked white here anyway...
cate blanchett coming right after angelina jolie was weird to me, I also love how you only saw megan for like a split second lol! but heidi montag being on here was completely uncalled for.
i think the heidi montag thing at the end made sense with the deeper meaning of "THE CHANGING FACE OF BEAUTY". It has to do with all the surgeries she went through... But i guess the morphing is just too fast and there were less familiar faces from the earliest generation. i mean those were all actresses and no musicians... cuz i think shania twain deserves to be there, too.
i think they were going for the "iconic" women from our pop culture. whether there were enough "women of color" or not, the bottom line is this piece sucks. Why get worked up over a piece of shit?
Ha Naomi Campbell the only woman of colour, wow. I was just waiting then I saw that bitch wow. But seriously not even latin women, middle eastern, god this disgusts me. And who the FUCK says that these white women's look is the standard of beauty??FUCK them!!
You know, people only get all offended and shit when it's white people, but if this video were based on solely ANY other race, nothing would have been said.
Really interesting video. I don't disagree with any of the faces posted. We have to remember that the makers of this video didn't pick and choose the beauties, but that society as a whole did. As for Heidi Montag, the plastic surgery she underwent represents that many people today buy their faces... or that plastic surgery has become extremely popular bc of societal pressures.
I agree so many beautiful Black, Latina, Asian, and the many mixtures thereof. A tradgedy. Still without tits, the whole clip was just a meaningless fart in the wind.
I think they were trying to make a point when they put Heidi Montag as the last face... she got the surgery to become the prime of what is considered beauty.... it's kind of like a "what is this world coming to?" kind of statement.
i think heidi montag is there because it's showing how beauty has changed over the years and that plastic surgery makes you "beautiful". even though the other girls without it were much more prettier, her beauty is gross.
i think heidi montag is there because it's showing how beauty has changed over the years and that plastic surgery makes you "beautiful". even though the other girls without it were much more prettier, her beauty is gross.
Marilyn Monroe was the prettiest one of the lot. The "modern" models look strange. Guess today's vision of beauty is a square jawed, over sized lips, odd eye color freak of plastic surgery.
uh wow, there was like on black girl on there - naomi campbell, probably because they had to put just one in there. this is sad theres many non white pretty women out there - kim kardashian, jessica alba, aishwariya rai, beyonce, eva longoria, the list goes on. and this is just sad

@ImperialBlackhawk Thank you for your response. The "beauty icons of today" do include women of color and more than ever plus-sized women. They were unfortunately absent from this video. Aside from that though, I suppose my comment reflected my desire for a criticism of the standard rather than an accurate portrayal of it over the last 100 years. So yes, my comment was not entirely appropriate.
Thank you for drawing my attention to the articles. I will check them out.
Look, maybe having heidi montag in there was supposed to make a point. She is seen everywhere and had those surgeries to become what she thought was most beautiful. She's not UGLY, just plastic.
@blasianbabe09 even if plastic surgery is fake and I don't like it either but the goal is to make you more beautiful, you know, what people consider beautiful. So that's why she's in here I guess.

Reading the description shows that she was put in at the end not necessarily because she is "beautiful" (not imo, anyway) but because now a woman doesn't have to be naturally pretty -- she can be built to fulfill her perception of what is beautiful, and that is a current beauty ideal.
where are all the BEAUTIFUL hispanic, black, asian, etc. women. and the last one, Heidi is ALL PLASTIC!!! very racial point of view on someone's behalf!
@dhwife2000 well, maybe Essence will make one; htey are supposed to have a bit more momentum now that they've hired a new fashion editor. Who's white.
There's more than one woman of color shown here; first Billie Holiday, then Diana Ross and finally, Naomi Campbell. Although I agree, they need more Latina's in here!
The 'changing face of beauty' includes only one African American? Heidi Montag? The changing face of beauty? Are you kidding me?? This is a montage of caucasian women. What about Grace Jones, Tyra Banks, Imaan, Salma Hayek, Penelope Cruz, Aishwarya Rai, Jennifer Lopez, Halle Berry, Lucy Liu... There are many faces of beauty. I don't think this vid is actually claiming that Montag is one of the great beauties of our age. Am probably mistaken, but to me it seems the vid is criticizing, or at least highlighting how warped beauty has become, i.e. how prevalent plastic surgery has become. Past iconic beauties were (mostly) natural; today, people can just buy their looks.
I realize including more minorities may have thrown off whatever aesthetic you're aiming for, but...Would it have killed you? Then again, the lack of minorities might say more about society itself than the person who edited this video.
Idea for a programme: Ladyshapes with Alan Partridge. I look at the changing shape of ladies through the ages, from fat, chubby ladies of the Renaissance, to hard-faced Cromwellian sourpusses, right up to twentieth-century well-toned women like Sharron Davies and Jet from Gladiators.

Why is everyone in there except for three people- white?! Only Lena Horne, Eartha Kitt and Naomi Campbell.. are worth mentioning as women of color who are icons of beauty. Sad Newsweek Shame.
@jsilverwolf They are not considered because of their color but because they are considered the most beautiful people of their time. BTW, just because they are all pale doesn't mean they aren't different races, or "women of color" (what a bullshit term).
Honestly I think Naomi Campbell is ugly as shit and Halle Berry, Penelope Cruz, and Aishwarya Rai should be on that list, but they aren't so get over it.
It shows the reality, not the "politically correct".
Angelina Jolie is a woman of color, Audrey Hepburn is German, she is one too, and Catherine Hepburn is Irish, I think she is too, and if there is any actress with Native American blood in that list they are too...in fact any woman is a woman of color.
What about Lucy Lui, she is pale...is she a women of color?
I am Native American and Irish, but I am pale...am I a "woman of color"?
@rachaelnicole08 women of color mean people who have an ancestry that isn't angelo saxon, german, irish etc is how the term is commonly used. But I am not here to debate the usage of the term. I was simply stating that the reality of what the media thinks is beautiful is skewed and doesn't represent the majority of the planet. So we can agree to disagree on the term women of color.
I do agree with you, but I was just trying to point out that Newsweek was trying to show that these ladies in this video were seen as the representation of beauty in their time. For example, we don't think Heidi Montag is pretty but we as Americans find plastic surgery more socially acceptable now. In Naomi Campbell's time, black ladies where just starting to be represented even though she wasn't the best person to pick. Whitney Houston was far better.
@jsilverwolf Note that "woman of color" is acceptable, but "colored woman" is a horrifying gasp-provoking transgression. Aren't we getting a little too precious and walking on eggshells with our terminology these days?
Although there are a lot of beautiful white women out there, they should have put in more asian, latina and black women. Where's Halle Berry and Selma Hayek???? In my eyes every race is beautiful really....
I don't think they're saying that people of other races are less beautiful than white women - they're saying that, in society, fortunate or not, these are the beauty standards. And it is pretty clear that white women are unfortunately favored over black women and others of color as being 'more beautiful'.
Katherine Hepburn to Rita Hayworth to Marylin Monroe was really well done. Billy Holiday, Diana Ross, and Naomi Campbell were great non-white inclusions. Ann-Margaret could have had half a beat more. This was a fun video to watch.

@MrFreakaccident
I don't think they're saying that people of other races are less beautiful than white women - they're saying that, in society, fortunate or not, these are the beauty standards. And it is pretty clear that white women are unfortunately favored over black women and others of color as being 'more beautiful'.

this video was made by an idiot. all of these women are basically still considered beautiful.

Katherine Hepburn to Rita Hayworth to Marylin Monroe was really well done. Billy Holiday, Diana Ross, and Naomi Campbell were great non-white inclusions. Ann-Margaret could have had half a beat more. This was a fun video to watch.

Heidi Montag? NO. Too much plastic surgery to be considered beautiful.

@TheKingOfRuckus I think that is the point of having her at the end, to say it went from natural to now fake beauty.
x8xasdf 1 year ago
@x8xasdf That's an interesting way of looking at it.
TheKingOfRuckus 1 year ago
@TheKingOfRuckus I think thats the point. 'The changing face of beauty' includes the modern use of plastic surgery to obtain 'beautiful'
