I competed here a long time ago, and I got my ass kicked in the second round! But the guy that beat me went on to win the whole thing. So I'm not so sad about it...I'm Lying!
Want has little place in a real sword fight. If you end up in tsubazerai you use what you can to win. Tsubazerai techniques are some of the deadliest in the kendo players repoirtoire. It is also the art of bodychecking.
This is my first time watching a kendo match but how come the body and arm blows don't register as points? I figured if the blows will damage you with a real sword, then they'd be worth points in kendo. I also don't really understand the part where they are right on each other hilt-to-hilt. Sometimes this "hug" gets crossed in a way that your sword is actually between his and his head, opening both of you up for an easy hit. Yet, no advantage is taken or point given?
Kote --> the right wrist (always) or the left wrist (in raised position)
Or when you're very good, a tsuki (thrust) to the throat.
But hitting alone is not enough. you need kikentainoicchi = synchronisation of mind, sword and body. Your right foot has to hit the ground at the same time with your sword hit while you make a kiai (battlecry) naming the place you're going to hit.
@Sally0602 I am a Kendo-ka, and yes, you have to shout your moves. At least at Shinai Contest as you see in this Video. For example "kote". It means "hand", and has to be shouted when you are about to hit the enemies hand. Only if you really hit the enemy and shout the right "Kyai" (The name of the move) you will get a point. After two acknowlegded hits, you win the Shinai battle.
@TheMangekyoItachi Just out of interest (im a fencer not a kendoka) does that mean that tactically you premeditate the move before you hit? Is there any scope for changing your mind mid action? What about 'feints', can you pretend to strike one area to draw the opponents defence into a different line allowing you to attack another or does the discipline of kendo rely on 'timing and distance' to break through a defence. (I'm trying to understand the essential mindset.)
@muresug Yes, you can "feint". For example you can pretend attacking Men (head) but than swiftly swing your blade and hit the Do (abdomen). You can also hit Men and switfly hit Kote (Wrist) after the first strike. Otherwhise you can change your stance. Some Kendoka fight with two Swords (Nito: a short and a long blade). Other have a very open stance, they have their arms in the air all the time, so they can strike for Men more efficient, but the Do remains uncovered.
@muresug No, I think you got me wrong. It would be senseless to premeditate the move, because 8th Dan, (highest grade in Kendo) would have an easy battle. Such trained Kendo-Ka like we see in the video would be able to defend if you premeditate. Neither you are allowed to name an area to hit, and then hit another spot. No, the meaning is "Kikentainoichi". This sounds complicated, but it simply means: Your Sword, Mind and body are one. You name the part you hit in the same moment as you hit.
I have to admit I know nothing about Kendo. It was interesting to watch, but they just stood there most of the time. I couldn't even tell who won because I don't understand the rules for the game. -shrugs-

The hilt-to-hilt thing would be silly in a real sword fight. That's why I don't get it.
tchenku 2 years ago
True, modern kendo is a lot different from kenjutsu, from which it evolved.
This situation is called tsubazeriai or handguard fight. The kendoka are pushing each other trying to create an opening for an attack.
For comparison, it's a bit like a clinch in a boxing match.
With a real sword, you wouldn't want to be standing like that...

Points in Kendo are only awarded when you hit:
Men --> the head
Do --> the chestarmour
Too technical?

@succumb2me i was just thinking of starting to play kendo, where can i read more about the rules? do you really have to shout your moves?

The point of the red is made around 2:30. Time goes off without any other point being scored so he wins.
I agree it's difficult to understand a kendo match for a untrained eye.
