  • are you saying there noo drivers for cd-rw on 486?

  • I have netbsd 5.1 on P1 166 Mhz 32 Mb RAM. Works as fileserver via wifi net !! Fast and cool ! on a machine from 1994 !!!

  • wont Windows 95 run faster than this ?

  • @cobrafazea More likely, Windows 95 will *crash* faster than this.

  • Wow, that's really neat! I have the same exact computer, but not so much RAM. I cant believe you got Windows 2000 on there. How did it work out? And how did you do that anyway? When I try to install Windows 98 on mine it says I can't because I have no Math Coprocessor.

  • @smartalex61 I replaced the Am486SX2 that comes stock with the unit with an Am486DX2 (with a built-in math co-processor) that I thought was no good cause one of the pins broke off. It hasn't shown any signs of being busted in the last two years.

Make up a floppy disk with either DOS + CD-ROM drivers (FreeDOS is a good choice) or Smart Boot Manager (I recommend SBM over DOS)

SBM can El Torito boot a CD even if the BIOS can't. This will boot you straight into the Windows Setup textmode installer

  • @segin2005 Ah, okay. Thanks! What I used to do to get it to get into a Windows setup was use the Windows 98 startup disk with the CD-Drivers, then go to the CD drive and execute the setup program.

  • I have the same computer with FreeDOS.

  • I've considered FreeDOS. I can't do it, I need UNIX. DOS seems so... bastardized... in comparison.

  • wonderful ! I have FreeBSD working just with 32 MB ! P1 166Mhz

Now would be COOL to run server WEB, MAIL, PRINT and gateway on your "server" :-DDDD Very good job !

  • @mptrax Except that I don't own any parallel printers, and ISA USB cards have shit driver support (the drivers don't support Bulk transport making most USB devices e.g. flash drives and printers unusable).

Also, why mail? Then I would have to get my ISP to give me a dedicated IP, ensure that Spamhaus has it whitelisted, etc. lot of work when GMail does everything for me.

Gateway? I need more than 400KB/s throughput.

  • And you can put also Win2000 on this PC without any problem. Cheers

  • ROFL - my mistake mate, I saw now specs on this PC , you can barely run even WIn95 on this rofl, but okay, NETBSD is a powerful Unix distribution - I love bash shell - so this PC can be good IRC/FTP server at home. Cheers

  • Wait, this machine HAS ran Windows 2000 - I misread the back of my StarCraft CD case, and forgot that you need a DX4 (133MHz), not a DX2. But yes, I've done the 2000 route. It ran, and even ran a command-line mp3 player (mpg123)

  • But minimal system req. for win2000 are p133, 32mb EDO-RAM (or SD-RAM on 100mhz) and non-3d graph. card.

So pentium and DX4 - what's the difference anyway?

  • It is possible to get Windows 2000 to install on an 80486.

The 80486DX4 was Intel's last pre-Pentium processor. It ran at 75 MHz and 100 MHz. The 100 MHz version was faster than the 66 MHz Pentium! (Except for 3D graphics.)

  • You can install Win2000 via setup.exe /nm command(s) - but real minimum for win2000 is p133 CPU. Because NT kernel is more advanced and more resource hog than any Win9x (MS-DOS) based OSes. Cheers

  • Yes, this computer should run Win2000 with no problems.

I thought the 486DX4 went up to 100 MHz? At least, that's what it says on Wikipedia.

  • You can install Win2000 via setup.exe basic install commands (as /nm). These type of commands can avoid CPU/memory detectionn. But using Windows 2000 on 80486DX4 is useless, because NT arch. is MORE advanced and it has more requirements than ANY MS-DOS based Win9x OS. Cheers

  • I think it's Windows 2000's eye candy that's why a Pentium is recommended, because when Windows NT 3.1 came out in 1993, it's system requirements were an 80386 and I believe 4 MB of RAM. When Windows NT 4 came out in 1996, it's recommended SR were a 486 and 8 MB of RAM, but it was claimed to run fine on a 386.

So, assuming that the NT kernel hasn't been changed from NT 3.1 to 2000, I think it's Windows 2000's graphics effects (fading, shadows, etc.) that recommend a Pentium.

  • Yes I remember first NT arch., but in these times NT arch. was based for servers only. I know that Linux in these days was a though "enemy" of M$ and of NT arch. NT was firstly introduced on servers, then Win2000 was first desktop commercial based OS (for desktop PCs as I remember). And NT always was though for CPU/memory resources when you even try to compare Win9x based OSes with NT based OSes. And you can also find source code for Win2000 and you can discover that many codes are from NT 3.1

  • Yes, but why the hell would anyone in their right mind want to run 9x anyways?

  • People who own older computers and/or take an interest in older Windows OS's. I'm running Windows 98SE on an old comp with a 466 MHz processor and 256 MB of RAM, and i'm testing Windows 95 on an old laptop with a 266 MHz processor and 128 MB of RAM.

Some people dedicate themselves to using only Windows 9x - lol!

  • You are right - Win9x is outdated. NetBSD is fantastic, but you cannot run any modern OS (which can be updatable) with GUI (even any modern KDE/Gnome Linux distribution is heavy for that PC). I see that you had Gentoo Linux on that PC? Probably you run that distribution without GUI, you run that in terminal mode/bash shell. Cheers

  • Ok, maybe my mistake, I was trying to use the machine to play StarCraft.

I guess it would take Windows 95/98, but I would never do that.

  • Barely run Windows 95? Windows 95 should fly on a 486DX2 and 64 megs of RAM...shouldn't it?

  • I don't have Win95 anymore, 486DX2 should run fine Win95 yes, because as I can see minimal system req. are pretty low for Win95. But I didn't have 486DX2 at home with Win95. I had Win95 on P133, 16mb EDO-RAM with S3 Virge card. Timeless classic.

  • But nobody would ever want to run Windows 95.

  • That's way cool! Although i'm more interested in the computer itself than I am of BSD running on it. lol!

I love these old computers, especially Compaqs. The Presario CDS-520 is one of the few all-in-one desktop computers ever made.

Have you ever tried a graphical BSD or Linux OS on this?

  • Yes, I have. This machine has ran numerous different OSes in the past, I'll update the video description to reflect them all.

  • If you want to know more about the hardware, I can probably go over more of the details... I was given the machine by someone that once was a CEO, and the company they worked for went under. This PC was their office PC.

It's a nice machine for it's time, if I can get X to work and not die on me, I might install xdoom :)
