My fellow irish brothers and sisters, I love you for loving Michael Collins(Micheal OCaoileann). 500,000 people turned out to mourn this great man that God had begat to us. It was Ireland's Darkest Day.
And I bet nobody showed up to that Bastard DeValera's funeral.
Michael Collins,
RIP 1890-1922
He was only 31. Imagine that, truly a dark day - for Ireland died along wiyh him.
We declare the right of the people of Ireland to the ownership of Ireland, and to the unfettered control of Irish destinies, to be sovereign and indefeasible. The long usurpation of that right by a foreign people and government has not extinguished the right, nor can it ever be extinguished except by the destruction of the Irish people.
I think every Irishman and Irishwoman who know what he did for us and our country can truly say that they love this man. He was a true Irish patriot and a hero.
Yes that's absolutely right, I was in Dublin on holiday this week and my husband and I went to Glasnevin Cemetery and I was able to place a flower on Michael Collin's grave along with the hundreds of others in many vases that completely covered his grave.Still as highly thought of today as when he died. Very moving day for me.
God bless Ireland. History always corrects itself. At the time de velara vilified him, now its de velara who is now the disliked one while Michael Collins is a national hero
No, The Big Fella didn't unite Ireland, he united the Irish, in the spirit of Republican progress. Republicanism, by definition translates as "without monarchy". Each foot of soil that Collins reclaimed for Ireland was in itself an Irish victory. The six counties manifested its own heros, in the mould of Collins, so he did in fact bring about Irish freedom, albeit long after his death.
My granfather fought in the easter rising in dublin. For you to realise the complexity of our struggle with 'our friends across the water' is extremely refreshing. Unfortunately there is a lot of information undocumented about the british army durning there presence in Dublin(Raping, murdering, stealing.......etc)For a small nation in size (huge in heart) with a limited weapon supply to achieve what we achieved is amazing. I am extremely proud to be Irish. Micheal Collins RIP
It is always the same, it's what you don't know that is never seen as a news report and the truth is often masked and hidden , while the blame is put on the ones who are seen, and not the ones who hide behind the law.
at the same time he was secretly arming the north.he was using the republic in order to obtain freedom FOR THE NORTH. NO ONE but God the almighty could have bargained it all in that single treaty
I wonder if the newsreels have anything they did sometimes do records of speeches? Like for the radio? One could try and find out. Pathe might have one.
It is part of a song called "Funeral/Coda" by Elliot Goldenthal from the Michael Collin's movie soundtrack(1996, starring Liam Neeson and Julia Roberts, dir. Neil Jordan).
what the anti-treaty guys forgot was that mick would never have given up until he got a 32 county ireland. he was the only guy smart enough to do it. great loss.
collins was trying to use the 'stepping stone' effect to free the six counties from brit rule...ie free the 26 counties then use that as a base to launch attacks against the brits in the north...while he signed the treaty he was still arming the IRA in the occupied six counties...genius
I agree there. I always said dev was a power hungry bastard. He Had Michael and many others killed. And he and his Irreglars were willing to put Ireland agasint Briton in full on open war. Selfish bastard. Would have killed and doomed the Country
Was made the scapegoat by Dev and signed the Treaty on a promise the talks will be held the the next year to decide the norths future, brits never furfilled their promise.. didn't like the fact that Collins borrowed about 12 18' pounder field artillery guns from the brits to attack his fellow country men in the four courts though... I'd say the brits had a good laugh at that, let us kill ourselves and tear our country apart and they can just sit back and watch it all happen!
What a legend, great Corkman, he'll never be forgotten. The treaty he signed gave us "the freedom to win freedom" There was nothing he could of done. Pity he never got the chance to see how it all worked out. His death united the country. "They'll never kill me in my own county," he said, God I wish he was right.
The lads would have follow him to their graves ! He beat the brits at their own game .

This video is odd because the CIRA has more in common ideologically with the people who killed Michael Collins than with Michael Collins himself.
