The only reason this movie was made is because Robert Evans could not get the filming rights to make "Annie".
They discovered they already owned Popeye and someone suggested the idiotic idea of making a musical.
Dustin Hoffman was supposed to play Popeye, but he recognized a turkey when he saw one.
Altman was a good director, but he had no business making a musical in Malta of all places. none of thses songs are joyful or even hum worthy, the choreography is a joke
A perfect example of a great cast, great director and funny idea completely undermined by a lousy, lousy 'composer'. Think of how good this could have been if even, say Mel Brooks, chose the person to handle the music. This is so poorly constructed - so much time wasted waiting for the 4 bar filler accompaniment to get past before the next line of text... just awful, not to mention the primitive MIDI sound of it. Nilsson ruined the whole film.
hell yes!!! no one could've played olive like her! and of course williams as popeye was dead center as well. i love this show and i normally detest, loathe, despise, and...oh i dont like to use this word...even HATE musicals.
This movie has some of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard in a musical. I really wish the storyline had been different. I would have eliminated the father subplot, and made it a sweet, pure love story about Olive and Popeye.
What I love about the way Olive Oyl goes about singing this song is that she's trying to convince herself that Bluto is her guy while preparing to leave him.

If the only thing you can say about the dude you are with is that he is large and strong, he's not the one for you!!!!!

I know it is naughty... but it seems that by 'large', Olive is obsessing over the size of his genitalia.

@mattjblythe01: Why? Even in the Segar canon, Popeye was a sailor because his "poppa" abandoned him, leaving him alone to fend for himself.

The local girls helping olive have deeper voices in this clip. Watch the same clip thats uploaded by potatoscone and they sound much different.
I presume I am not the only one detecting a hell of a lot of innuendo in this video either! LOL
