I guess you just have to keep in mind when this song was written, ear rings and makeup on men were a quite flamboyant.

Actually the song was written after one of the band - the lead singer I think - visited an appliance store. The TVs were playing music videos...

Anyway, he heard a store employee complaining that bands don't have to do any real work for their money and that they (store workers) had to break their backs to earn a living.
