  • It's called the "tide" - it comes and goes every day. According to the water marks on the pilings, this video isn't squat.

  • @draugefil805 Thanks! We've gotten many comments and thumbs-down clicks based on a misunderstanding of what we were trying to show. Very pleased you get it!

  • That's super fake didn't u guys hear the squik sound that mean fastfowrd

  • @Atreyu1718 - Our discription clearly states that the video was sped up to more clearly show the effects of the five minute long surge.

  • @YourCalifornia I have a similar video of the west coast surge caused by the Japanese earthquake that I sped up so you can see the effect... it is amazing how dense people are and just think it is a "normal tide sped up." Thanks for posting, great video (for those of us who know what we're watching).

  • I live inland too and I live in port coquitlam, I am safe because if a tsunami happened it would go straight not an angle and the tsunami would not go that far, it would hit other islands first like powell river and vancouver island victoria also sunshine ciast, so I know I am safe

  • I live inland away from the coast but i don't know if Im safe.

  • Thanks for speeding up the video!

  • Great video. Wish I was there to see it but I had class. Also wish there were a lot more raw shots out there for the rest of the coast. Thanks!!

  • so the tsunami was 50 times smaller than the normal waves we get in Australia right......

  • the mayans told us where do you think all this is leading up to, oil spill, hati, chile, this, what next????

  • @RazDaz2000 what are you ten, no more natural disasters are happening now then 10 years ago.

  • "It looks like the tide coming in." Seriously? Who's ever seen the tide come in in about 6-8 waves. Looks good to me....Thanks for the video mate!!

  • @AHMetal86 Great point! It's clear there are just a half dozen waves or so - really no reason for me to even explain that the time-lapse was only five minutes. Appreciate the comment!

  • What time was this video shot? Around 3:00 pm was high tide that's what it looks like.

  • @michaelford3 Hi Michael - this was one of many surges lasting about 5 minutes (tidal shifts take about six hours). It was shot from 10:00 a.m. to 10:05. Hope that explains why it's significant.

  • waste of my time

  • just looked like high tide to me

  • @rookiekf123 this was one of many surges lasting about 5 minutes (tidal shifts take about six hours). It was shot from 10:00 a.m. to 10:05. Hope that explains why it's significant.

  • Another voice of thanks from someone who knows the California coast well and can appreciate the magnitude of what you've captured and showed us here. Thanks.

  • Check this video out guys,"Tsunami Wave Surge Up Mad River, Humboldt County, CA. 3/11/11. ".

  • A lot build up for nothing nobody even died I'm let down. But, WINNING!

  • hey theres a beach named after my last name?! :) yaaay! lol

  • So it got a little choppy big woop

  • Small waves? California beaches suck anyway

  • great video

  • okay well i heard that this tsunami was suppose to hit hard... did anywhere hit harder than this?

  • AWESOME

  • Thanks for the video. I looked this up to see the real truth of how the tsunami impacted the California coast, since the media media was giving false/exaggerated impressions. I appreciate you time spent.

  • @alexparody :) It was our pleasure.

  • @alexparody Watch a few more videos...the impact of tsunamis isn't consistent along coastlines. It impacted other parts of the state more significantly.

  • @alexparody This is the stupidest video ever

  • Thank you for the vid. I was curious as to what it would look like.

  • i heard this came from Japan. im not tryin to be mean if you think i am.

  • @54bobbers Yes - it travel more than 5000 miles, which makes it all that more dramatic!

  • @YourCalifornia correction it can travel more then 500 Miles Not! 5000

  • @yomomsroom The tsunami originated off the coast of northern Japan and the effects were felt (as shown) along the coast of California. That is more than 5000 miles.

  • did any of the boasts crash?

  • @dad5101520 Not in this harbor - but up the coast in Santa Cruz and much farther up in Crescent City, there were dozens of damaged boats. I simply showed the boats to indicate how you could watch the harbor for signs of whether the surge was coming in or receding - based on which way the boats were all pointing.

  • absolutly horrific...those poor californians...my heart goes out to them

  • Damn Freaky. i have never seen the sea react that way especially in 5 minuetes... i was born in California Im now glad i live FAR from coastal areas.... though i do miss the beach/

    ;_;

  • dope

  • LOL... I just wasted 1 min and 15 sec...

  • Dear "YourCalifornia". Thanks for sharing this. I am sorry to see the ill-behaved comments such as "This video was a waste of time". I guess some Youtube users think it is only a place for chaos and fun, with no room for fact-filled representations. I appreciate you having taken the time to compile the time-lapse. Cheers.

  • @JesperCairo Thank you! Your comment is much appreciated! The video is actually support for a written news piece we did explaining the event in further detail. When combined, I think the video makes much more sense to those watching it.

  • will this wace reach downey CA

  • thank god this isnt higher.

  • Hahaha, Good Job on the time-lapse. Don't mind all these morons that expect 100 foot waves from like 5,000 miles away. They don't realize the amount of energy in water even how tides work for that matter. Gravity's a beach!

  • when was this recorded? Do you know the time in the morning?

Thanks! BTW - thanks for posting - very cool time lapse

  • when was this recorded? Do you know the time in the morning?

    Thanks!

  • @coliasmeadii Yes, this was recorded at 10:00 a.m. until about 10:05 a.m. (PST)

  • @NINJATRONdnb Sorry you feel that way. We were just trying to show what took place Friday morning - for people who understand California's coastal patterns and would appreciate the time lapse effect.

  • @YourCalifornia , no offence , but there was nothing going on cept hi tide lol I dont know what this 'kaytaya1' person is talkin about. ' u r cuz u only think about ur self ' wow heh koo koo hehe

  • @NINJATRONdnb I am srry that i made remarks about u i didnt mean to offend you ur rite i shouldnt have said anything about u or anything. I apoligze and hope u can accept it. I was worried about my family in cali and about the people in japan. So i am deeply srry. And after i replyed i watched the video again and realized that it possible maybe high tide

  • @kaytaya1 you shouldnt jump to conclusions so fast , Ive lived in ca before ' riverside/oc line ' , i was only stating that i saw no tsunami.

  • @YourCalifornia

Hey, can you reply to my comment?

I wanna feel special like everyone else :)

  • @NINJATRONdnb Excuse you do you have family up in california. r u worried that it might get bigger i doubt u r cuz u only think about ur self i have family in california and that video is just showing how the waves r coming in farther and farther up the beach did u not hear wat happened in hawaii and japan

  • Comment removed

  • @NINJATRONdnb douche

  • @NINJATRONdnb Awww... Too bad they didn't show the belt.

  • @NINJATRONdnb Seems to be that if it was such a waste of time why would you waste anymore time leaving a comment?

  • no offense but its looks like high tide

what part of cali is this?

  • @akelodmc This is along the Central Coast. Yes, it looks like high tide - but keep in mind a tidal cycle only happens twice a day. This happened in less than 5 minutes!... and happened several times over the course of the hour or so we were there. We just captured one for the purpose of this time-lapse video.

  • @YourCalifornia Oh this looks like Mendocino, CA... thanks for the video.

  • @akelodmc Yeah it did. But it was definetly more than that. Lucky it was not nothing more. Easily could have been...

  • People who disliked this were hoping for people in California to get hurt..

    Freakin whores....

  • Guys this tsunami wasnt suppose to be like water in the city or stuff..

Just a series of waves that lasted a long time.

And its called a 1-3 foot tsunami.. Stupid people i swear xDD

  • According to a CNN weatherman or something, this would be the biggest event in the lives of the people of the east coast. I guess he thought he would be saving lives. i sure hope somebody has a copy of it, they'll do anything to keep viewers watching them instead of other news. I think more people will die of boredom.

  • Ive farted in the bathtub and made bigger waves than that, cnn, abc , fox and everyone else made it out to be big event haha wheres my rubber ducky and my tub ill show you waves

  • nothing happend....omg..lol...omg ...lol

  • im so sick of tired seeing the top rated comments being like "20 ppl will die in cali" its so fucking annyoing

  • @Onelove8226 We tried to be very cautious and accurate with our headline - simply saying that we were showing the related surge to hit California. No, it's not hugely dramatic if you're looking for video similar to the horrific destruction in Japan - but it was a very significant event for coastal California nonetheless.

  • @YourCalifornia no i dont want that i was just saying for an example,,, like ppl always put a number then something and it becomes the highest rated.

  • Was it like a powerfull undertow or what I don't understand! What the Hell is this showing?

  • tool - enema

  • 31 people liked how there was a tsunami in california because they hate cali so fuck u...and uuuum 15 people disliked because they thought people were gonna get hurt

  • @ALex26381 somebody did get hurt....

  • Tsunamis are so difficult for most to understand. Even on NBC's national news tonight the "science correspondent" said "the tsunami speeds up when it hits the continental shelf". ... ugh. ... anyway ... thanks for contributing to knowledge and understanding.

  • glad it wasnt that bad and everyone was ok.

  • so scary that it even impacted over here :/

  • Man today in school we all talked about this, we were so scared. Lol.

  • person got swept out to the Pacific Ocean. didnt they get enough warning?? im telling you people. ugh

  • @jr4chargers No offense to those who perished, but if you go to the beach AFTER hearing a tsunami warning, your so fucking stupid you SHOULD be killed.

  • Great shot of when it came in!! It doesn't look like much but it could of still of caused minor damage.

  • Omg you better watch it! Those waves will suck you in!

  • That was it... Good... No need for all that begging for money...

  • A man in California died trying to shoot pictures of this

  • @MiKeDpRoDuCtIoNs really? it didnt look to bad or were you just kidding

  • @purplebanana0 yeah it happened look it up very sad but he was warned.

  • Thank you for sharing this. The reality that people do not realize is it may not look like much but the currents are very strong which is what makes the tsunami dangerous. These very conditions could kill a unaware person and have in the past. That is why we have early warning systems in place for them.

  • its just a high tide bitch!!! hope u will hit by tsunami..moron you........

  • Wow and that's from an earthquake from across the pacific. Imagine if it hit right there!

  • this was great to see, thanks a ton for your time to film this and to speed it up.

  • IMPRESSIVE VIDEO!!! There are so many hurricane and tornado videos out but very few tsunami ones. VERY GOOD depictions of what these devasting waves can be!!!

  • I thought this was one of the better videos of the cali wave action. Most just show aftermath stuff, which is boring. This was fun, and I appreciated that it was sped up. Nice work! :)

  • @purefusion2 Thank you... your comment is much appreciated!

  • That was also during lowtide!!!

  • Wow, people like to be negative for no reason. I feel sorry for them.

  • Tsunami »

California harbor 'destroyed' by tsunami, but damage less severe elsewhere

March-11-2011-The tsunami created by Japan's 8.9 earthquake has now hit the West Coast.

Early reports suggest that two California towns - Crescent City and Santa Cruz - have been hit hardest.

Video: Watch the Japan Tsunami surge hit the California Coast at Avila Beach

Crescent City harbor destroyed; 4 people swept into sea, 1 feared dead

Crescent City's harbor destroyed by tsunami

  • It's may well be a small ripple of the tsunami but it also coincides with the high tide, i doubt it would look much different any other day when the tied comes in!

  • @danshell23 A tidal cycle only happens twice a day. This happened in less than 5 minutes!... and happened several times over the course of the hour or so we were there.

  • @YourCalifornia Fair enough wasnt sure how long you were filming for.

  • Tsunami-related surge hits the California Coast at Avila Beach <-- I copy / pasted the title for the idiots who didn't read it correctly.

  • what tsunami?

  • Thank you @miriamgillartist - not sure why the comments are running so negative. We just are trying to show what it looked like as the surge came onshore. No special effects (other than time lapse).

  • :O

  • who ever made this video is a loser

  • No, this is the tsunami surge from the quake. Pretty significant though to see the water rise that quickly!

  • oh yes. thats one "big" " terrofying" "tsunami"

  • um... tsunami this is not. Glad to know we're safe here on the central coast though :)

  • @miriamgillartist Believe it or not, this is actually tsunami footage. A tsunami is a surge of water, not a wave, like the stuff you see in cartoons.

  • ACTUALLY, the definition of a tsunami as given by the dictionary is a large, often destructive, sea wave produced by a submarine earthquake (underwater), subsidence, or volcanic eruption. Sometimes incorrectly called a tidal wave. But sometimes people call a tidal wave, Tsunamis. This was just a tidal wave. A tsunami is like what hit Japan.

  • @KaiThePhaux well, then tsunamis are pretty fucking weak. At least the ones in this shit-ass hunk of land.

  • @KaiThePhaux cool, thanks for the info. learn something new every day... perhaps "devastating tsunami this is not" would have been better wording anyway... still glad it was at safe levels here on the central coast. my heart goes out to the folks in Japan.
