Actually, as I recall, there were no overt references to Christianity at the ceremony. Just the usual inane reference to a god that most of our society continues to pray to, as exemplified by some of the other comments below. But I very much appreciate your point, particularly since I was raised in the Jewish religion and am the son of a P-51 fighter pilot who fought on Iwo Jima.

Yes, there were about a a dozen vets at the ceremony who fought on Iwo Jima--including my father.

Why do the secular government of the United States officially pray during ceremonies like this? Not all soldiers were or are Christian.
