  • That's more aikikai than Iwama style. I've practiced Iwama style for many years both in Japan (at Iwama) and Europe. I believe that Newens sensei is ranked by Hombu dojo in Tokyo. Iwama style is well structured under two banners : Hitohira Saito sensei (Iwama Shin Shin Shurenkai) in Iwama and Daniel Toutain sensei (Iwama Ryu International Academy)

  • Aiki-Dance as usual

  • Is Iwama style aikido the same as Iwama ryu aikido? I´ve read somewhere that Iwama style is represented by Hiroshi Isoyama and Iwama ryu is the unchanged aikido tought by Saito sensei. What is true?

  • @unikad Iwama style is what generally refers to the harder aikido Saito sensei taught in Iwama. Iwama ryu is the name of hitohiro saito's style after he broke away from the aikikai.

  • @unikad Iwama Ryu was dan ranks handed out by Morihiro Saito. These teachers were in Scandinavia and main land Europe, but not in Japan. The highest ranking Iwama Ryu teachers today are Corallini and Evenås, both 7th dan shihans.

After M. Saito passed away, Iwama Ryu ceased to exist and was under Aikikai again. I've trained at Aikikai dojos for short periods even if Iwama style is what my sensei was taught. There are some differences, but it's all still valid, good aikido.

  • @unikad

Actually, there is no official "Iwama AIkido". The term loosely refers to the rather hard and weapons oriented style practised while boss was in Iwama, and to those who follow that.

  • I study "Iwama style" at "Aikido Dojo London" with Sensei Justin Christou 5th dan

a former full time Uchi Deshi (live in student) of 8 years at the Iwama Dojo in Japan under Morihiro Saito sensei, this looks very different from what we do! I think Aikimans is correct, this looks more like Aikikia (my two pennies worth)

  • @szane67 Still Iwama style just a few of the more unusual kokyu oyawaza techniques

  • Your brain must heve been broken in 5 places before that sentence popped out from your mind.

  • Aikido: The art of breaking your attacker's arm in 5 places before he hits the ground.

  • That's the best description of Aikido I've ever heard! :P

  • @EnochMetatron Not sure you understand aikido, dude. Watch a few classes at a good aikido school and you'll understand why I say that. Not dissing you or anything. I just want people to understand the art I've practiced for nearly twenty years. It's still effective, without bodily mutilation!

  • @osirisanubis Haha, I understand. It was mostly a joke, but you must admit, in a real-world situation, an opponent who has not been trained as an uke is very likely to be hurt when he's on the receiving end of an Aikido technique.

  • @EnochMetatron You got that right! I remember practicing koshinage three years ago. I was not focused that day and my ukemi was horrible and consequently it hurt like hell. I landed on my side and heard (and felt) a crunch. Man, if i was on the sidewalk I'd be toast! Nice post.

  • I doubt very much this is Iwama style Aikido unless this guy just wasnt watching sensei while he was there. This is more like Hombu style ie light and flowery.

  • The video IS in slo-mo, y'know.

  • hoa newens sensei, student of morihiro saito,he had some other teachers as well so perhaps a little bit more open minded than most iwama teachers.teaches in davis, usa.

  • He is also a tai chi teacher, which gives him amazing flow.

  • Everyone in Aikido eventually develops their own style.

  • Agreed.

  • where did u get that transation

    Ai-harmony

    Ki-spirit

    Do-way/path

  • Just kidding around.

  • Hahaha, good one.

  • what is the difference between Iwama style Aikido and the other kind that I am training that I don´t know the name of but seems more softer then this style?

  • from what i know iwama ryu was the founders dojo and saito sensi took over and continued teaching and it was located in the countree not in the city. the farmers that trained there regulary were by nature much stronger than that of the city people who trained with the founders son and therefor its a more phisical art than that of others..

  • Iwama is a place in the Japan countryside. O'Sensei continued teaching there after the war and Saito Sensei was his longest standing student. Many of O'Sensei's pre-war students didn't continue with him and ventured out on their own (Yoshinkan Aikido). The Iwama eyu style still incorporates weapons training, whereas many other styles don't. The bokken and jo are the origin of all Aikido technique.

  • I understand Iwama style tends to be a bit rougher than Aikikai. The way Aikido used to be before the hippies took over :-)

  • Aikidokas that chase the White Dragon, wear badly colored clothes and smell like some sick spice? Where's the dojo at? Ahma sign me up!!!

  • Exactly. The proper term for those people are Aikibunnies.

  • @Derukugi2 The way you worded your comment is hilarious as well as true. Although I tend to like less aggressive training, I understand aikido's roots well. I don't care for aikido dojos where people just dance around sniffing scented candles and listen to Enya playing from the dojo mini boom box. Honest to God, I went to a dojo for a seminar and found out that there are no belt tests there. People automatically receice belt promotions based on training day numbers!

  • @osirisanubis The school I attend is much more rigid as far as belt promotions go. And the level of seriousness about the training is at a maximum at all times. Oh yeah, and no scented candles aloud!

  • @Derukugi2 Wouldn't that be Yoshinkai?

  • @cloudstone123

Doesn't look Yoshinkan to me at all. But sure, everything is possible.

  • @Derukugi2 I just meant that Yoshinkai would be considered rougher than Aikikai.

  • @cloudstone123

Yes it is. But this clip is about Iwama, which precedes Yoshinkan by a long time.

  • Actually, aikido is useful but its limitations. the best use of aikido is in opening a martial art school because aikido classes can be a tad expensive in some places.

  • Aikido is so useless

  • Hahahaha, so is a fork if you don't know how to use it.

  • ur a tool

  • Aikido is so graceful

  • I love the one at :08. Will have to try that today.

  • The one at :16 is my favirote.
