...So you just walk up to Satan and then it ends? And plays "Joy to the World"? That's a pretty bad ending... "See once again the stars"? What the heck happened!?
playing this game as a little kid, it just seemed me a huge success to pass the first river... remember i was really mesmerized by the good looking graphics and good music, but i probably never passed the red river. this game was a bit scaring and hard
At the beginning, you're treated to a scene of a giant skeleton about to snack on a bunch of naked toddlers. Then, you get to explore Hell. Too bad I never played this game. Looks like a gas.
@Oreichalcos stupid amounts of grim dark? o.O *looks puzzled* you do realise this game is set in hell, no? i played through the game and honestly felt it should have been a lot more disturbing :P only thing that made me squick at all was when one of the gluttons took a dump on me Xo
@nnythesuicidalmaniac Yes, but The Divine Comedy did such a great job of scaring me without going into grimdark. I really wanted the game to be more like the supposed source material and less like something a teenaged cashier at Hot Topic wrote.
@Oreichalcos eh, i think its a lot down to the medium really, the divine comedy worksn wonders as its a written piece, but to make a game people will want it has to be something a bit different. no offence to the above game, but something like that would just NOT be seen these days as it is. Also, i must admit that i havent read the divine comedy, so cant really form much of an opinion between it and the game ^^;
@nnythesuicidalmaniac Both games have their strong points. I suppose that just standing around like the original wouldn't be fun. But things like Beatrice being saved instead of saving and the lack of fun near the end suck. As long as they don't convert Purgatorio and Paradiso the same way, I'm fine :D
I knew the Inferno was too good of a video game idea to just now be made. I think the Visceral version is more accurate to the poem (at least you always know which circle of Hell you're in). But I bet the folk at Visceral played this version before: the cross as a weapon, the constant descent, the look of Lucifer.
The music is pretty awesome, and challenges are nice, but the navigation really sucks. I mean, this dude knows the game, he knows where to go, but to play the thing for the first time. It's like you'll keep running in circles THE WHOLE TIME.
Nice work, I used to play this game years ago and could never beat it. C64 games are the hardest! It has a certain scary atmosphere that even todays games have failed to capture...
Don't be fooled, this game is brutal. One hit kill and go back to the start all the way through, plus there's some objects that are useless, so you need to know WHAT to drag across Hell. You do it in five minutes flat if you've spent the last month learning the ropes.
Also, the demo recorder is skirting the rules a bit - the Gorgon is 'supposed' to be defeated differently, but it involves doubling back before crossing the flaming river to get another item. Which would increase playtime more.
@haxel75 A lot of Bach, yeah. I've been told it uses Bourrée from English Suite 2 (though maybe played backwards), Minuet from French Suite 2, and Overture (Partita) in B minor. Overture in B minor's the only one that sounds dead-on, IMHO.
For the completist: BWV 807, BWV 813, and BWV 831,
@GeneralPotatoSalad Many thanks! :-) Wonderful with the BWVs too! I'm totally in on BWV 813, and BWV 831 but I cant hear bourrée clearly. maybe backwards, Ill have to experiment on that on. Thanks again! This music is wonderful.
@haxel75 Not a problem. And just to make sure I didn't screw up that BWV, if you want to know where I got the info from, it was on musipedia's forum. I poke around there every now and then and some guy asked about it. Thread's still on the first page of their melody forum as of April 2010 -- just look for a thread about Bach video game music.
looooooool i dont know if you making a funny or being sarcastic ar w/e but u made me laugh this is dantes infeno not DEVIL MAY CRY CRY cry (u may/may not have new that but i 4rt id comment n-eway)
I'm with you bud... when i heard of the new Dante game i was excited... then i saw the trailer... ack. Amoung other things, the all powerful protaganist Duke Nukem Bellmont is sure going to make the atmosphere scary *rolls eyes*
Well, I rented the new one, and I found it actually pretty enjoyable. But I do have more of an appreciation for how this game stayed closer to the book.
How do you think he'd feel about EA's marketing... the fact they're using the fact there is no liscence holder to just destroy the intent of one of the world's greatest works of literature?
u think they destroyed it? EA presented us theire version of dantes inferno, sure in a more brutal, morbid and macabre way but it has its own style.
and if u ask me, today we need games like this, before EA's Dantes Inferno, alot of ppl dont even knew about dante's divine comedy ( dantes inferno ).
and thats the sad thing about it, that ppl today need fancy videogames instead of books.....
@AnTiVid couldn't agree more - so many people were unaware of what the Divine Comedy was and in turn its first part "Inferno". I bet there were people who had never heard of Zeus before God of War came out as well! lol
@Gojira87 The second level is extremely dark and mute of all light. The wind bellows as the seas rage in a tempest. This is a place or realm that is an eternal residence of the lustful. Sinners in this level are blown around needlessly and aimlessly by the unforgiving winds as a sign of punishment for their sins. The blowing of these souls aimlessly symbolizes the power of lust to blow one about aimlessly and needlessly.
if there were weapons and puzzles this game might have been alright. as is, it's homosexual

So this is suppose to be the first Dante's inferno. Dante you look stupid! you should be beating the living hell out everybody!
crazyanigamer 11 months ago
Even if insanely short it does look promising tbh. and since its so short the music can be lived with.
Would have been interesting to see what would have happened if the latest "Dante´s Inferno" had been more survival than hack and slash.
