  • I`m going to see him in Dublin in November. BOOM!!!!

  • I`m going to see him in Dublin in November. BOOM!!!!

  • "Okay. This is for all my friends that I love and I love all of you."

  • You guys, he's coming back! I just heard from Flavorwire he is doing an east coast tour of the US and tickets for the NYC show go on sale this Friday!

  • I think Jeff is an artist whose tried to be understood by so many things that his true self has been completely lost.

  • Need to marry you **busizz4me.info**

  • He doesn't have to make another album, or write another song.

Sometimes, this song is the only thing that makes me feel like another human out there somewhere is worth relating to.

And that's good enough for me.

  • his silhouette is a torment, sounds beautiful tho

  • he is fuckin amazing.

  • The guy in front of the camera - his shirt is inside out.

    So.

  • this hasnt been recorded studio anywhere has it?

  • @ILoveMikeyStipey the B-Side of Holland 1945 7" Single was Engine. And I think (Not sure!) that that was a studio version. Not sure where you could get it.

  • I thought his last concert (before the Chris Knox tribute) was in 2002 in New Zealand or something. What's the deal? This just a one off?

  • @Ned0002 He's done 2 or 3 little songs at places. I think he preformed in 2008 two times for 2 songs, but i'm pretty sure they were both surprise shows. Although he has said he hopes music becomes a larger part of his life than it has been in the past after his final concert...so maybe one day he'll play regularly with a new album... let's hope :)..

  • Thats a theramin thats accompanying him?

  • @jaybyrd570 Singing Saw

  • @molluskweddin gracias. Never heard of it but from the beautiful sound I shall look it up

  • @jaybyrd570 someone playing a saw.

  • @jaybyrd570 I think that's Julian Koster on singing saw.

  • This gave me so much strength, when I was feeling down about a year ago knowing this guy was back singing after his resign from music or w/e. Great filming juss wish I was there. its been a while. "For I am an engine and I am rolling on"

  • what album is this song on ...or where is this song from?

  • wow just wow.

  • marvelous.

  • the most haunting thing i've ever seen.

  • this is awesome great sound quality, a amazing performance

  • lmao i literally had a convo with him and had no clue who he was.

song "chocolate coffin" ? cant find it:/

  • Jeff is a such a true artist, unfortunately this is the reason we haven''t and maybe never will hear another album. This was great to see though, he sounds really good still, his voice sounds magic, it posses you and fills your mind with images you've never seen before. I'm sure if he ever releases another album, it will be just as great as In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, possibly even better.

  • @yournameislimitless Have you heard Little Birds, the only "new" Neutral Milk Hotel song that has been played?

  • Thank you for sharing your music with us again!

You never sounded better. I'm afraid to hope to for more in the future.

  • WE FOUND JEFF MANGUM!

Now make another album! Take your time, I can wait for glory.

  • I lived in Columbus at this time and never knew about this. Who is playing the singing saw? Why can't I find out when Jeff comes out of hiding and decides to play some of his best music?

  • Julian Koster, former member of NMH, is playing the saw. and from what I understand jeff doesnt ever look at it like he's ever been in hiding. he stopped playing with his band and releasing music, sure. but he's still like exists. this is an Elephant Six tour, which is all his good friends, so I guess he felt like playing a song. no big announcements. no big deal

  • wow.

  • Jeff is great , that's obvious, but so is that singing saw. Its amazing.

  • this is the most amazing thing ive ever heard. it sends chills down my spine. i really hope he goes on tour with them again... those people are few in a million to hear this.

  • haha i'm so glad someone feels the way i do. it's become my favorite song of all time for that.

  • That was the best thing ever. I hope they tour again.

  • i'm glad i wasn't in that room. i'd probably have curled up in a ball on the floor and cried like a baby, which would have looked silly

  • that's me going YEAH at the beginning! i teared up at the show cuz E6 are my heros and i love them. just hearing all of these songs live that changed my life was incredible! it was nice meeting jeff.

  • i'm the idiot who says "we love you too jeff"

  • It sounds more like "I love you too Jeff" lol.

  • No, sorry you are wrong. I don't really feel the need to argue about this, but I drove 18 hours to this show from Florida, got stoned out of my mind and was stammering when Jeff started playing. I definitely remember saying it, and I can recognize the sound of my own voice. Who the fuck are YOU?

  • He's right, it was Dihnekis. I was in the car with him.

  • I've been playing my saw along with koster all day today. beautiful.

  • This is the best video of all the holiday surprise mangum videos. There is just something special about it. Thank you for whoever recorded this. I was there, and i will probably return to this video many times in my life.

  • I was sitting outside The Knitting Factory earlier on this tour. I look up and he's walking towards me down the street. My friend and I went over and talked with him for a while about where hes been and what hes been up too. Such an amazing and lucky experience.

  • You're pretty fucking lucky.

    Wish I'd met Jeff...

  • so what has he been up to??

  • I would kill to have been at this show.

  • to reply to viggo215.

i do not worship him. i do not google him every day,

i do not talk about him. i do not call him a god.

his music voices what i want to say but never could and cant explain,

thats why it is beautiful and emotional for me.

to criticize someone else for taking his art in there own way makes me angry, because i am not a fanatic, im am not an obsessor, i am someone who has been truely moved and touched and yes sometimes cried as a result of this music.

  • Amen, you awesome motherfucker.

  • I've never heard anyone say this, but I think he is one of the greatest guitarists I've ever seen. I only see this because he has the incredible ability to separate his voice from the guitar, without either relying on each other. It's something unique that I have never seen before, it's a unique in that I hardly even see it in separately recorded music. Neat.

  • I totally see what you're saying.

  • i too know what you mean.

  • i have no idea what you're talking about

  • What I mean is that his guitar and voice seem seperated. They work together even though they sound like they could stand alone.

  • Sounds like he's strumming along to me. i think fingerstyle guitar requires a much higher level of separation not only between the vocals and guitar but also between your right and left hands as you play.

  • seriously. he is amazing

  • Engine is my favourite Neutral Milk Hotel song. I'm really excited to see all the new videos of it.

  • viggo! you didnt ofend!(if you ment me)

by the way i cant stand when people love nmh and youre like whats youre your fav song? and they say, "that aeroplane song". but any way. i like all their songs. i absolutely love the last line of engine.i dont have time to think of a list. its like 2 am.

  • just wondering what is everyone's favorite nmh song.

    My top five are

    1-Communist daughter

    2- engine

    3-Ferris wheel

    4-2 headed boy pt 2

    5- little birds

  • seriously?

I always thought communist daughter was the weakest song on the album.

And no Oh comely, in the aeroplane or two headed boy pt.1 and 2?

  • Comment removed

  • tie between ferris wheel on fire and everything is.

  • 1-Engine

    2-Everything Is

    3-My Dreamgirl

    4-April 8th

    5-Two-headed Boy pt. 2

  • Hey I agree that jeff is an amazing artist that can create music that does touch someone deeply, i just think that there is a point that because of the success of aeroplane that he is in a lose lose situation. If they come out with a new album chances are it won't have the same magic as the last one did. if people want to idealize him than thats fine because it is their life and whatever I think doesn't mean shit. Thanks for responding sorry if i ofended anyone.

  • viggo215: well put. but i feel like neutral milk hotel is the music that is logical to me. everything i feel is in those songs, and everything in the songs is what i feel. i have never been tired of a nmh song.ever. thats why i think hes amazing. so worshiping for the sake of worhsipping is bad. but idealizing the genius of someone is just honesty. and i love julian koster and scott spillane, especially julian equally.they do not get enough credit,.

  • After reading the past few posts on here I realize why Jeff does not want to come out with new music. It's because of the people who act like he is a god. There really is no reason to cry when you hear these songs, unless it has a really close meaning (a death or whatever). It just pisses me off when the worshipers cry and put him on a pedestal. People he is just a human he has no super powers, yes he has a great musical gift but thats it he is only human.

  • P.S. please feel free to reply and tell me how much of an asshole I am and how Im not a real NMH fan. Thanks

  • You're not an asshole. I think that to say he won't come back because people idolize him is wrong though. I know people who could cry when they see truly beautiful paintings just because they touche a certain emotion in them that is really vibrant and deep. Should that painter render the viewer a fool, and never paint again because people praise him too highly? Nah, dude. He should produce more, for HIMSELF because he really digs painting. I could cry to this song because it's so beautiful.

  • I dont see how someone isnt allowed to have a strong emotional connection to a song. you're just being a bitter wanker, i think.

  • When I hear his work, I just get inspired to play myself. I love that his songs song good enough with one man and a guitar, but when he's with the full band you get the great unique instrumentation to go with it.

One thing I'd absolutely love to do is get a couple guys and play the entirety of Aeroplane somewhere as a tribute. I think I could do it enough justice that it wouldn't completely ruin it, and these songs are fun as hell to play.

  • i would be okay to die right on the spot after i saw this live. Jeff is the most beautiful person ever born, i understand his dissapearence. This makes me want to cry, if i could have been there i would have.

  • Man. I love this song, I just played it last night, but for some reason I forgot about how beautiful it is. When he started singing my eyes teared up.

  • this song and thinking about how jeffs life was like gives me chillz It's so classic that he stopped doing music to enjoy life more. i hope its just a working marketing technique. cuz if he ever came back every show would be full and everyone would kill to hear his new songs.. Theyd be soo good

  • I was standing there watching him play this. Goddamn, what a memorable night. When he came out and sang on "I have been floated" we couldn't believe it, but when Jeff and Julian came into the crowed and played together. Gah, I'm getting shivers just thinking about it again. We drove up from Florida to see this show in Ohio, and this made it completely worth it.

  • I'm bawling

  • I must see him before I die. If anyone knows where to keep up on more appearances, please reply to me. His voice/music is the greatest, hands down.

  • I love the silence in the audience! That tells you all you need to know about how much Mangum is missed. Nobody wanted to miss a second of this treat!

  • his voice sounds slightly different to me, but brilliant. shit i'd have loved to see this performance live

  • The Lord has never given anyone I have ever heard such a talent for music save David.

  • man is a genius.

  • this made me smile and made my day like 100x better than it was!! brilliant, you're so lucky to have been there ^.^

  • Man, he sounds the same after all these years. Amazing.

  • this is fucking AMAZING. Why wont he make more music?!

  • HE NEEDS TO TOUR AGAIN. WHAT THE HELL.

  • it's been way too long since he's been gone, and now that he resurfaced...he sounds better than ever!

  • its been about 10 years since any neutral milk hotel songs have been performed live... very happy to see this

  • Does any one know where I can get an mp3 of this version?

This is my very favorite version I have ever heard...

  • This video makes me want to grow sideburns

  • Yeah, I just can't grow 'em right...

  • Mine always come out patchy and weird.

  • the elephant 6 tour came to indiana.

and i didnt even now it.

    :[[[[[[[[

  • It's so glorious to see him playing again.

  • thank you god.

can't believe i just found out about this...

    it only brings me hope..

    >>;

  • best song ever?

  • yes

  • whats that thing making that sound in the backround?

  • A singing saw, played by Julian Koster (former member of NMH). If you like it, check out his music; it's really great.

  • a theramin

  • your sure about that? it sounds similar , but isn't it a singing saw? that is what has always been used for this song.

  • Singing saw.

  • yeah I knew it. I like both, but the singing saw is so much better.

  • It sounds like his voice has improved since the 90s! i would love to hear a new album, but maybe the fact that Neutral Milk Hotel have mostly disappeared is the reason i find them so enchanting.

  • Great song. I really hope he writes another album someday.

  • I still get goosebumps every time I watch this video. Amazing.

  • WHUR DA AEROPLANE LOLZ

  • "This is for all of my friends that I love. I love all of you."

  • goosebumps

  • hory clap <3 <3

  • Wow, glad to see he's still playing music.

  • Jeff still has it in him.

    very much so.

  • all the people who respond to NMH videos with like, "oh man! so glad I was here for this one!" need to shut up, so those of us who arent lucky enough to have seen them dont get jealous and hate you!

  • my heart still stops at the strum of those first few chords.

  • WHOA. I had no idea this even happened!!!

  • Wow. did not think this would ever happen.

  • just magic...i love it!!!!

  • / cry

  • i live less then half a mile away from where he played, he has been my favorite singer/songwriter since i first heard of him , i am devistated that i did not hear of this show...i missed the oppurtunity of a lifetime on that day and i will never forgive myself for not knowing about that show

  • im sorry

  • I am so glad I was there for this... I went there trying to talk myself out of even hoping Jeff Mangum would show up, and... then he did. And it was beyond amazing.

  • THANK GOD!

  • wow i havent heard anything new from jeff mangum since 1998, his voice sounds amazing. Glad to have you back on the scene jeff and i hope NMH gets back together so i can see some live performances of all those great songs

  • gotta love that theremin in the back too. mmm.

  • That would be a singing saw, not a theremin.

  • Oh wow. Kinda similar sound.

  • I am so sad that I couldn't go to this show.

  • greatest voice in all music.

  • welcome back jeff. magic. we missed you.

  • I may drive from Florida to Kentucky tonight, solely to see him play; even if its just one song.

  • Drove from New York to Kentucky. It was worth it. :)

  • did you do it?

  • fucking magic

  • so exciting.

  • you are a true hero, 911WDUB

  • So...is NMH coming back?

  • highly doubtful.

  • if i was there i would have CRIED

  • what does this mean?!?!?! is neutral milk coming back?!

  • yeah i saw MBV, jeff, and JANDEK recently

wtf? all 3 i thought i would never see.

so, i am pissed because at the chicago show tonight i could not get through the crowd to see him. i could only hear it. but it was so unreal and beautiful. so beautiful.

  • Holy shit. Never would I thought I would see this. Well, eventually I did, but not so soon. And such a perfect performance, too. Not a single error. Perfection. Welcome back, Jeff.

  • the crowd is silent. it's incredible.

  • Welcome back to the whold touring thing, Jeff

I hope to hear some new stuff soon!

  • Thanks for having your camera ready. Mine was out of memory by this point in the show. So glad to have a record of it... my mind was exploding.

  • amazing

  • this sounds perfect. thank you for shooting it and sharing.

  • yet another reason why pittsburgh sucks

  • this video is better than the pittsburgh one for the simple fact that no one is talking. it made me absolutely furious that anyone could have such disrespect to such an unreal event, such a beautiful song and such an incredible man. i would KILL to be at any of these shows, it makes me so happy just to see video of it. it makes me more frustrated than anything that i didn't see it but some blabbering assholes did. this crowd however, couldn't have been better.

  • i love this song and everything... but would you actually kill someone? O_O

  • haha, no but it's an expression. i'd pay an insane amount of money for a chance to go. i'd give up eating for a month if it meant i got to see jeff mangum play nmh. i was just raising the point of people talking and not appreciating the incredible thing they're witnesses to.

  • So in the past month I've seen My Bloody Valentine reunited play a show. And now Jeff is playing at shows again? Is this like the end of days? It's too good to be true. Since I heard about his reemergence I've been listening to Aeroplane, Avery, and Jittery nonstop...

  • Yeah, I've always liked NMH but this really reignited my interest.

  • Regardless of anyone's beliefs on Mangum's music, or the press which has suffocated him for 10 years now, moments such as these define exactly why human beings are drawn to music, and find heroes in those such as Jeff.

  • I have been an enormous fan of neutral milk since first being introduced to them in high school. I have been fortunate to see many many bands in intimate settings throughout my short life. I would be lying to all of you if i I said that I was not changed forever by this performance. My friend and I did not talk the entire hour and a half of the drive back to Athens that night. I guess it was just one of those moments where words were not appropriate.

  • I've watched this video and the clip from Pittsburgh a million times since they've been posted. It makes me so unbelievably happy. I've been waiting to see this for years. Way to go, Jeff. I just want to hug you.

  • wow this give me chills. if i saw jeff mangum live i would be balling uncontrolably. NMH is my religon

  • you are a hero for posting this

    thank you

  • so awesome. these videos of jeff performing recently make me so happy. like to a point of almost bursting. even though i didn't get to see it, it feels just as magical.

  • I got to see this live as well. Absolutely amazing.

  • Brilliant sound quality! Thanks for sharing!

  • I've seen alot of photoshops in my time, and this is definitely shopped.

you can tell by dead pixels in Mangum's hat.

    JAYKAYLOL

    whoo neutral milk!

  • Still shocked that I saw this. The reports from the previous night's show weren't posted until after I headed to the Wexner Center, so I think we were all blindsided that he actually played. Definitely sounds better in Columbus, too. To the poster of the video, did you stop taping at the end as it stands now? I thought the crowd response was amazingly high and it would be nice to hear a bit of it.
