You guys, he's coming back! I just heard from Flavorwire he is doing an east coast tour of the US and tickets for the NYC show go on sale this Friday!
@ILoveMikeyStipey the B-Side of Holland 1945 7" Single was Engine. And I think (Not sure!) that that was a studio version. Not sure where you could get it.
@Ned0002 He's done 2 or 3 little songs at places. I think he preformed in 2008 two times for 2 songs, but i'm pretty sure they were both surprise shows. Although he has said he hopes music becomes a larger part of his life than it has been in the past after his final concert...so maybe one day he'll play regularly with a new album... let's hope :)..
This gave me so much strength, when I was feeling down about a year ago knowing this guy was back singing after his resign from music or w/e. Great filming juss wish I was there. its been a while. "For I am an engine and I am rolling on"
Jeff is a such a true artist, unfortunately this is the reason we haven''t and maybe never will hear another album. This was great to see though, he sounds really good still, his voice sounds magic, it posses you and fills your mind with images you've never seen before. I'm sure if he ever releases another album, it will be just as great as In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, possibly even better.
I lived in Columbus at this time and never knew about this. Who is playing the singing saw? Why can't I find out when Jeff comes out of hiding and decides to play some of his best music?
Julian Koster, former member of NMH, is playing the saw. and from what I understand jeff doesnt ever look at it like he's ever been in hiding. he stopped playing with his band and releasing music, sure. but he's still like exists. this is an Elephant Six tour, which is all his good friends, so I guess he felt like playing a song. no big announcements. no big deal
this is the most amazing thing ive ever heard. it sends chills down my spine. i really hope he goes on tour with them again... those people are few in a million to hear this.
that's me going YEAH at the beginning! i teared up at the show cuz E6 are my heros and i love them. just hearing all of these songs live that changed my life was incredible! it was nice meeting jeff.
No, sorry you are wrong. I don't really feel the need to argue about this, but I drove 18 hours to this show from Florida, got stoned out of my mind and was stammering when Jeff started playing. I definitely remember saying it, and I can recognize the sound of my own voice. Who the fuck are YOU?
This is the best video of all the holiday surprise mangum videos. There is just something special about it. Thank you for whoever recorded this. I was there, and i will probably return to this video many times in my life.
I was sitting outside The Knitting Factory earlier on this tour. I look up and he's walking towards me down the street. My friend and I went over and talked with him for a while about where hes been and what hes been up too. Such an amazing and lucky experience.
i do not worship him. i do not google him every day,
i do not talk about him. i do not call him a god.
his music voices what i want to say but never could and cant explain,
thats why it is beautiful and emotional for me.
to criticize someone else for taking his art in there own way makes me angry, because i am not a fanatic, im am not an obsessor, i am someone who has been truely moved and touched and yes sometimes cried as a result of this music.
I've never heard anyone say this, but I think he is one of the greatest guitarists I've ever seen. I only see this because he has the incredible ability to separate his voice from the guitar, without either relying on each other. It's something unique that I have never seen before, it's a unique in that I hardly even see it in separately recorded music. Neat.
Sounds like he's strumming along to me. i think fingerstyle guitar requires a much higher level of separation not only between the vocals and guitar but also between your right and left hands as you play.
OH MY GOD.. noone understands how happy this makes me. ive had a shitty day and Jeff Mangum is my only cure. he hasnt changed a bit, except maybe even gotten a little better =]
by the way i cant stand when people love nmh and youre like whats youre your fav song? and they say, "that aeroplane song". but any way. i like all their songs. i absolutely love the last line of engine.i dont have time to think of a list. its like 2 am.
Hey I agree that jeff is an amazing artist that can create music that does touch someone deeply, i just think that there is a point that because of the success of aeroplane that he is in a lose lose situation. If they come out with a new album chances are it won't have the same magic as the last one did. if people want to idealize him than thats fine because it is their life and whatever I think doesn't mean shit. Thanks for responding sorry if i ofended anyone.
viggo215: well put. but i feel like neutral milk hotel is the music that is logical to me. everything i feel is in those songs, and everything in the songs is what i feel. i have never been tired of a nmh song.ever. thats why i think hes amazing. so worshiping for the sake of worhsipping is bad. but idealizing the genius of someone is just honesty. and i love julian koster and scott spillane, especially julian equally.they do not get enough credit,.
After reading the past few posts on here I realize why Jeff does not want to come out with new music. It's because of the people who act like he is a god. There really is no reason to cry when you hear these songs, unless it has a really close meaning (a death or whatever). It just pisses me off when the worshipers cry and put him on a pedestal. People he is just a human he has no super powers, yes he has a great musical gift but thats it he is only human.
You're not an asshole. I think that to say he won't come back because people idolize him is wrong though. I know people who could cry when they see truly beautiful paintings just because they touche a certain emotion in them that is really vibrant and deep. Should that painter render the viewer a fool, and never paint again because people praise him too highly? Nah, dude. He should produce more, for HIMSELF because he really digs painting. I could cry to this song because it's so beautiful.
When I hear his work, I just get inspired to play myself. I love that his songs song good enough with one man and a guitar, but when he's with the full band you get the great unique instrumentation to go with it.
One thing I'd absolutely love to do is get a couple guys and play the entirety of Aeroplane somewhere as a tribute. I think I could do it enough justice that it wouldn't completely ruin it, and these songs are fun as hell to play.
i would be okay to die right on the spot after i saw this live. Jeff is the most beautiful person ever born, i understand his dissapearence. This makes me want to cry, if i could have been there i would have.
Man. I love this song, I just played it last night, but for some reason I forgot about how beautiful it is. When he started singing my eyes teared up.
this song and thinking about how jeffs life was like gives me chillz It's so classic that he stopped doing music to enjoy life more. i hope its just a working marketing technique. cuz if he ever came back every show would be full and everyone would kill to hear his new songs.. Theyd be soo good
I was standing there watching him play this. Goddamn, what a memorable night. When he came out and sang on "I have been floated" we couldn't believe it, but when Jeff and Julian came into the crowed and played together. Gah, I'm getting shivers just thinking about it again. We drove up from Florida to see this show in Ohio, and this made it completely worth it.
well he dosnt do any shows.heonly shows up at elephant 6 shows.when ever they come to nyc i go have yet to see him. man is truly gifted the dyan of our day if there is one.just sucks we only got 2 albums but better than none.
I love the silence in the audience! That tells you all you need to know about how much Mangum is missed. Nobody wanted to miss a second of this treat!
It sounds like his voice has improved since the 90s! i would love to hear a new album, but maybe the fact that Neutral Milk Hotel have mostly disappeared is the reason i find them so enchanting.
all the people who respond to NMH videos with like, "oh man! so glad I was here for this one!" need to shut up, so those of us who arent lucky enough to have seen them dont get jealous and hate you!
i live less then half a mile away from where he played, he has been my favorite singer/songwriter since i first heard of him , i am devistated that i did not hear of this show...i missed the oppurtunity of a lifetime on that day and i will never forgive myself for not knowing about that show
I am so glad I was there for this... I went there trying to talk myself out of even hoping Jeff Mangum would show up, and... then he did. And it was beyond amazing.
wow i havent heard anything new from jeff mangum since 1998, his voice sounds amazing. Glad to have you back on the scene jeff and i hope NMH gets back together so i can see some live performances of all those great songs
so, i am pissed because at the chicago show tonight i could not get through the crowd to see him. i could only hear it. but it was so unreal and beautiful. so beautiful.
Holy shit. Never would I thought I would see this. Well, eventually I did, but not so soon. And such a perfect performance, too. Not a single error. Perfection. Welcome back, Jeff.
this video is better than the pittsburgh one for the simple fact that no one is talking. it made me absolutely furious that anyone could have such disrespect to such an unreal event, such a beautiful song and such an incredible man. i would KILL to be at any of these shows, it makes me so happy just to see video of it. it makes me more frustrated than anything that i didn't see it but some blabbering assholes did. this crowd however, couldn't have been better.
haha, no but it's an expression. i'd pay an insane amount of money for a chance to go. i'd give up eating for a month if it meant i got to see jeff mangum play nmh. i was just raising the point of people talking and not appreciating the incredible thing they're witnesses to.
So in the past month I've seen My Bloody Valentine reunited play a show. And now Jeff is playing at shows again? Is this like the end of days? It's too good to be true. Since I heard about his reemergence I've been listening to Aeroplane, Avery, and Jittery nonstop...
Regardless of anyone's beliefs on Mangum's music, or the press which has suffocated him for 10 years now, moments such as these define exactly why human beings are drawn to music, and find heroes in those such as Jeff.
I have been an enormous fan of neutral milk since first being introduced to them in high school. I have been fortunate to see many many bands in intimate settings throughout my short life. I would be lying to all of you if i I said that I was not changed forever by this performance. My friend and I did not talk the entire hour and a half of the drive back to Athens that night. I guess it was just one of those moments where words were not appropriate.
I've watched this video and the clip from Pittsburgh a million times since they've been posted. It makes me so unbelievably happy. I've been waiting to see this for years. Way to go, Jeff. I just want to hug you.
so awesome. these videos of jeff performing recently make me so happy. like to a point of almost bursting. even though i didn't get to see it, it feels just as magical.
Still shocked that I saw this. The reports from the previous night's show weren't posted until after I headed to the Wexner Center, so I think we were all blindsided that he actually played. Definitely sounds better in Columbus, too. To the poster of the video, did you stop taping at the end as it stands now? I thought the crowd response was amazingly high and it would be nice to hear a bit of it.

all the people who respond to NMH videos with like, "oh man! so glad I was here for this one!" need to shut up, so those of us who arent lucky enough to have seen them dont get jealous and hate you!

I am so glad I was there for this... I went there trying to talk myself out of even hoping Jeff Mangum would show up, and... then he did. And it was beyond amazing.

gotta love that theremin in the back too. mmm.
darbycrash661 3 years ago
That would be a singing saw, not a theremin.

I may drive from Florida to Kentucky tonight, solely to see him play; even if its just one song.

wtf? all 3 i thought i would never see.
so, i am pissed because at the chicago show tonight i could not get through the crowd to see him. i could only hear it. but it was so unreal and beautiful. so beautiful.
vuvaladusi 3 years ago
Holy shit. Never would I thought I would see this. Well, eventually I did, but not so soon. And such a perfect performance, too. Not a single error. Perfection. Welcome back, Jeff.

yet another reason why pittsburgh sucks
BeingCorey 3 years ago 2
this video is better than the pittsburgh one for the simple fact that no one is talking. it made me absolutely furious that anyone could have such disrespect to such an unreal event, such a beautiful song and such an incredible man. i would KILL to be at any of these shows, it makes me so happy just to see video of it. it makes me more frustrated than anything that i didn't see it but some blabbering assholes did. this crowd however, couldn't have been better.
slstratocaster 3 years ago
i love this song and everything... but would you actually kill someone? O_O
penelopepoisonpen 3 years ago
haha, no but it's an expression. i'd pay an insane amount of money for a chance to go. i'd give up eating for a month if it meant i got to see jeff mangum play nmh. i was just raising the point of people talking and not appreciating the incredible thing they're witnesses to.
slstratocaster 3 years ago
So in the past month I've seen My Bloody Valentine reunited play a show. And now Jeff is playing at shows again? Is this like the end of days? It's too good to be true. Since I heard about his reemergence I've been listening to Aeroplane, Avery, and Jittery nonstop...
stripathiwork 3 years ago
Yeah, I've always liked NMH but this really reignited my interest.
TheBoss2332 3 years ago
Regardless of anyone's beliefs on Mangum's music, or the press which has suffocated him for 10 years now, moments such as these define exactly why human beings are drawn to music, and find heroes in those such as Jeff.
BeingCorey 3 years ago 2
I have been an enormous fan of neutral milk since first being introduced to them in high school. I have been fortunate to see many many bands in intimate settings throughout my short life. I would be lying to all of you if i I said that I was not changed forever by this performance. My friend and I did not talk the entire hour and a half of the drive back to Athens that night. I guess it was just one of those moments where words were not appropriate.
BeingCorey 3 years ago
I've watched this video and the clip from Pittsburgh a million times since they've been posted. It makes me so unbelievably happy. I've been waiting to see this for years. Way to go, Jeff. I just want to hug you.

you can tell by dead pixels in Mangum's hat.
