I sawCorelli at the Met many times in many roles. This Boheme brings back so many memories. During the 1971 June Festival Corelli sang 3 times, two Cavardossi's & one Rodolfo. The Toscas were Levine's debut. The Boheme performance turned the audience into frenzied fans. After the curtain calls, the Met brings down what looks like a movie sreen. We wouldn't leave. Screen up, bow lights on, Corelli & Kabaivanska out for more. We wouldn't let them leave. That was love. What singing! BRAVI !!!!!!
You can't take your eyes off him, but not for a moment does he convey anything close to a young poet with raging hormones and an empty stomach, in this clip he looks and sounds precisely what he was at the time: a gorgeous, irresistible man in his late forties. Much as I adore him in almost everything else, physically and vocally Corelli was not cut for this part.
Mirella Freni is especially admirable for the way she tries to cover his crack on the final note.
If the orchestra had played that loud, broad and thick with any other Rodolfo, I think he would stopped the performance and walked out. Maybe the conducter (Santi) was so happy about such a powerfull voice that he could not resist holding back. Therefore the most heavy "O soave..." ever.
Radames sings Rodolfo.he he... In the same Gala in Hamburg 71 he sang extracts from Aida too. So i think it may be a reason for this beeing the most heavy Rodolfo ever heard. I won't call it tasteless, but I think the role of Rodolfo would suit a more lyric italian voice. And for Gods sake; he did not have to prove that high C. I agree it would be fantastic the original way. That would prove his strength! Anyway; FRENI is amazing as Mimi
Yep, he cracked it. A strong shake of the head to perhaps let Freni know to cut it short. He probably told her to watch for it before the performance. He was getting older here. He did crack it. Listen.
He didn't hold it for 10 seconds like he usually does because he was about to crack, and you can hear his voice begin to falter. Thats why he cuts it short. Pretty much a crack.
Corelli could hardly control his nerves. But with no doubt was an astonishing voice, with a lot of sonic energy. Besides that he was an athelete for most of his life. Bealtiful man. Remarkable legs... Freni is sweet...
im from hamburg and its kind of weird to know that mirella sung in our opera house.it was before i was born.

Let's not forget that Caruso was a great Rodolfo and was hardly a lyric tenor. It's not that light of a role.

sounds like he had it good first at the beginning then when it just is starting to crack he shakes his head and stops sustaining the note.
