Not trying to be a killjoy here. But you forgot that "Undun" hit No. 1 in Oct. of '69. So this was their 5th killer in a year's time! Kicked the Beatles' ass with that salvo!!!
really the story behind the song is they were invited to play woodstock and said no. So the american radio stations wouldnt play thier music for awhile so they wrote the song as a protest to the way they were treated i was tehre i know because of the interviews they did about it.
I think this song is perfect lyrically, because our country has acted so irrationally since WWII that it invites comparison with a 'woman,' God's most irrational creature.
I've got a story about this song...via my father..he had the 8 track that he played in his car constantly. My mom grew tired of this song playing over and over again...which I wouldn't I could listen to it everyday for the rest of my life...anyways one day she just got so upset of him playing it one day.she took the 8 track and threw it out the window of his car while going down the road.
Well my dad dropped off my mom at the house and had a excuse to go back out...only to retrieve the 8 track.

One of the most misinterpreted songs ever, the lyrics are a scathing commentary on America's imperialistic attitude at the time of the Vietnam War. Despite a very clear lyric: "American Woman, get away from me," Americans often hear it is a patriotic ode and a tribute to American women. The Guess Who are Canadian.
@LauriePlum "The Guess Who" between pop music & hard rock. This song was N. 1Internationally for the critizism of American's War Machine as Laurie Plum mentioned. No one thought different, though it also was an attack on American fashion business.Whoever was over 16 knew that there was "The Guess Who" from Canada & "The Who" from Great Britain, besides "The Who" had a number of albums out already,"Tommy" LP came out rbefore this "American Woman "song.
@LauriePlum Actually, I think Americans at the time knew exactly what it was about and agreed wholeheartedly, since the 60s was an era when college students (and sometimes professors) were protesting the Vietnam War. Compared to some radical groups like The Weathermen, this sentiment was pretty moderate. However, you might be right about Americans today misinterperting the lyrics. Although I don't know how they could misinterpert "I don't need your war machines" or "Goodbye American shit!".
A lot of people seem to get The Who and The Guess Who mixed up, but I don't really mind.
If you look up this song you'll probably end up finding other songs by both bands, which I consider to be a win-win in my book, as they're both fantastic groups.
It is a great song and their albumn Live at the Paramount has a fantastic version which runs into Trucking of Across the Sky which is also a fantastic song. It would be nice to have a live version on here. I saw the Stones in Sydney and chatted to a Canadian guy next to me about music and he didn't know the Guess Who were Canadian!
It is a great song and their albumn Live at the Paramount has a fantastic version which runs into Trucking of Across the Sky which is also a fantastic song. It would be nice to have a live version on here.
I remember when my older brother brought home the vinyl LP of this song in the 70's. I was riveted to the record player with excitement. It still rocks ...
@MicroWorldLover, another good group is Country Joe and the Fish with their "fish cheer & I feel like I'm fixin' to die rag" song from their album or their performance at Woodstock ;-)
This song (in its original) was, and still is, extremely significant to me. I am so glad there are so many young persons out there who like it (well, who like the original). Life hasn't all gone to Shite (Irish 'swearing'), after all. Thanks for all your comments--the vast majority of them have been positive!! Great! Now I can stop pestering Burton Cummings to make at statement about the REAL meaning of 'American Woman'. Let us ALL 'call it a day', and be done with it. :)

@SidEskorbuto Dude, sorry that so many people gave you hell for this. I didn't know they were different bands until I was like 12, and I heard both of them from a very young age. I don't blame you for not knowing. But I'm sur plenty of people have made sure you know the difference...

@50pstone I agree very strongly with you, but this song isn't about American women... it's about America as a whole. Still... change some of the lyrics to convey what you're meaning and I'll dig that song as much as I like this one. matter of fact... I'm thinking about learning this on my guitar and changing the lyrics to suit...
@zeroswings2 If you can, would you please update the lyrics from 'Alice's Restaurant' and 'God on our Side', by Arlo Guthrie and Bob Dylan, respectively?
@MicroWorldLover Wow, man... I'm kinda honored that you'd ask me to do that, but to be perfectly honest I haven't heard those songs. And I'm only just learning to play guitar... I would love to update lyrics and such, but I'm not really qualified to do that. I wish I didn't have to disappoint you, but...
@50pstone This song is not about American women. This is an anti-Vietnam war song. The 'American woman' referred to in this song is the statue of liberty.

This is the version of the song that the WHOG has always played for me and the girls prior to our protests in Dayotna Beach. We stand for the Constitution, The First Amendment, and Topfreedom for all women.
Just remember this: No corpus delecti, no crime. GOT IT? If there is no physical harm done to another human being, there is no friggin crime! Show me one incident of a human being being intentionally harmed with a breast? Please. Bill O' Reilly couldn't do it. I really doubt that you can!

I am not very fond of the words to this song but it's still a great song. I have heard several stories about how they came up with the words to this one.
@Jasminne2009 Yeah, I agree. I love the song but wish the lyrics were a little different. I saw them in concert when I was a kid in 1975 and had no idea what the lyrics were about. Thanks for posting !
@liverpoolbride1 In Indianapolis Burton's father showed up. He had deserted the family when Burton was quite young. Burton saw him but all his dad wanted was money. That is when he wrote Sour Suite about meeting his dad there in the hotel.
@Jasminne2009 This is an anti-Vietnam war song. The American woman referred to in this song is the statue of liberty. So....rest easy, unless you are in favour of the Vietnam war...

It sure made him look tall.
I am not very fond of the words to this song but it's still a great song. I have heard several stories about how they came up with the words to this one.
I wonder...

Please tell me at least one story. (=
I had this song on a 45, when I was in 7th grade, but I don't remember any stories.

The white suit was not a good look for gorgeous Burton.

Well, the white baby grand seemed to be his 'signature' . I guess he just wanted to match it !
