  • after i heard all this remakes of Tom Waits original song, i realized that at the end, original is the "worst" in this competition. My favorites are blind boys of alabama and steve earle.

  • seasons in order of best to least-best (doesnt make sense to use the word "worst" for such an awesome show): 3, 5, 1, 4, 2. and the theme songs: 3, 5, 1, 2, 4.

  • my seasons rank (seasons not theme songs) 1,3,2,5,4

  • Whos that chick at 1:08 ?

  • Actually the original version of the song in the one from season 2 played by Tom Waits, and imo that is the best one.

  • Epic Rock Throw Finally in Color!!

  • the begining of this sounds like the intro from steely dan's do it again

  • I just can't believe Steve Earle was an established singer, he has such a great voice.

  • this was my least favorite because its way to upbeat

  • Meh, Earle's version is alright, but nothing beats Tom Waits' rendition in my opinion

  • @Renee2383 Oy! Asshole! don't post spoilers like that without some sort of warning!

  • TRIVIA (for those who don't know already)

The guy who sings this version, Steve Earle, plays Walon (Bubbles's mentor) in the show.

  • @imbobsaget

    good trivia dog

he also does the song for the montage at the end of season 2

  • the original season 2 mr tom waits was the best then mr earle

  • the original season 1 mr tom waits was the best then mr earle

  • The original is the one from season 2 by tom waits; but i've allways liked the one from season 1 better...

This is also great though :)

  • 1 > 5 > 2 > 3 >4

  • 5 > 4 > 1 >2 > 3

  • Best intro of the best T.V. show ever!!!

  • Speaking of intros,

    Season 2 > Season 1 > Season 5 > Season 3 > Season 4. That's just me though.

  • @darthzydar Haha, I think the intros are the complete opposite... 4 > 3 > 5 > 1 > 2

  • this is the best intro by far. i hate this show didnt last longer than it did. stupid HBO ending shows before they should.... grr.

  • @superbrian1214

It didn't end prematurely, there was no more material for a sixth season. Although covering the influx of Hispanics to Baltimore was thought of there was no one with experience about the Latin American immigrants on the crew of The Wire. It's all in the extra material on the 5th season DVD's.

  • yea i agree i loved this show like no other and have come to accept the fact that television will never have a show this good again but look at it this way. The Wire went out on top as opposed to successful shows that keep coming back for the sake of having a show and in the process end up tarnishing the overall quality of the show..The Wire didnt do that...The Wire=Greatest thing to ever happen to the television set.

  • @cs00024 I don't agree it's the best, but it's not often you get a decent American produced drama and this one is brilliant. Makes up for all the crap that comes out from the states.

I did throughly enjoy it though, used to love sitting down and watching three episodes in a row late at night while I was writing work up etc. America won't make something as good as this again for a very very long time.

  • @B8rkley yeah its the best

  • @B8rkley AMEN!

  • I agree with bluesgurugod, Tom Waits version for season 2 is definitely the best version.

  • I love this show, and this is the best theme. I really wished the show would have went on to a 6th season, there are so many things it could have went into, I wished it would have went into the health care industry.

  • haha....i agree with everything but y healthcare?

  • I like this intro the best of the 5 seasons

  • Uh false.

  • My favorite rendition of the opening song. Best of the 5 seasons, followed closely by the original from season 1.

  • @killerskillet

    Whoa..... there matey!!!

The "ORIGINAL" is from season 2 - not season 1.

All versions are great but TOM WAITS is ONE OF THE GREATEST musician/poets in USA and there would be no "down in the hole" without him. Go get yourself a copy of Frank's Wild Years and hear the master at work.

  • @killerskillet you mean the original from season 2...

  • @killerskillet I agree completely. Season 5's theme comes out on top, with Season 1 close behind.

  • Fantastic

  • What that woman name 1:10

  • i think shes katie cassidy, she was in the show harpers island, in the movie live! with eva mendez and in a movie with liam neeson set in france

  • best program in the world

  • My shoulders can't stop dancing!

  • Simply awsume! Its baltimore no1 lives 4 ever HAHA

  • this really rocks, the beat is perfect! the Show was very raw!!

  • i liked 5th most others were pretty boring

  • i didn't know this was walon singing this! this is my fav. opener next to season 4.

  • Watching Season 4 i thought that its theme was the best, just saw the first episode of 5 and now i have a new fav.

  • Tom Waits the original, but Steve Earle's was so perfect for the final season. Brilliant!

  • alot of peeps say this version was the worst but was my fav

  • this was my least fav. 'til i saw it a few times, now its joint fav.

  • crazy how wallace is showed at 0:55

  • All the intro songs were brilliant, but I tend to lean towards Season 5's and Season 1's. Those were great :)

  • I love every single intro song..until I hear the following season's intro, and then I like that one more than the one before..hahahaha

But this one is the best, hands down!!

  • when is this coming on bet?

  • WTF. Why would they stop using the Tom Waits version??

  • because they changed the theme every season to a different cover of this song. and his version wasnt even the one they used originally anyways.

  • The Best opening is probably season 4 and 1,

  • Steve Earle rockz

  • I'm sure there must be some symbolism behind the shot of Bodie breaking the camera being in colour in these..

    No idea what though.

  • The introduction of the wire is faultless, even with the woman singing it in series 4, the best is series 2 sung by tom hicks i think.

  • Season 4 wasn't woman it was kids.

  • Dude shut the fuck up. The intro has nothing to see with the show being good or not.

  • jestwat

  • great intro

  • I don't know about Jesus but Steve Earle is the man!

  • season 5......big dissapointment so far....i have 2 episodes left and if it doesnt pick up....

  • i agree

  • The Wire Demands alot from the audience so my guess is that u missed alot of important things being said

Its not always about the action

  • Well I'm not all about the action, but I believe involving the newspaper in the story was a huge mistake. Season 5 also left out any chance of emotional attachment besides Bubbles story.

  • the newspaper was not supposed to be emotional, david was trying to make a statement about how the news is now corrupt and when people cant rely on it , then everyone suffers. I do think it could have been better, the scenes were boring until mid way

  • I knew it! WHen i first heard this song i had a feeling it was Bubbles friend played by Steve Earl.

  • i miss this show a lot :(

    damn it HBO

  • Is this walon from the wire doing this song?

  • 'tis...

  • yes - steve earle

  • tune!!

  • nobody in the world can touch Steve Earle, season 5 and anything The Man does with music, writing and singing....God bless Steve Earle....

  • i dont care what no body say...but i like season 4 opening better than all of them!!!

it had a better beat and whoever was singing did a better job out of the ppl who were singing in the other seasons.

  • I'll be honest I love all 5, I love 5 seasons, and by God I love this show!!!

  • maaaybe, they would've been more interesting if there was a season 6 or more in order to develop the characters...but putting them in the best t.v. serie ever in the last season... i think it wasnt appropriate, i'd have preferred seing more scenes of randy or whatever

  • Hell yeah! Like wtf happened to him after that fire. Plus i think season 4 was pretty interesting cos' of them block boys.

  • Randy was originally going to get more development if I'm not mistaken, I think that would've made Season 5 better

  • has anybody noticed that season 5 has the only opening where bodie broke that camera with a stone in colour?

that happened in black & white even in the "original" moment, in season 1

i would pick S5 opening the best, it's really catchy, but the season itself for me it was the worst, i mean, in general terms it maintained the quality achieved in theprevious seasons, but come on, the newsletter storylines were bullshit

i never gave a fuck about that lying reporter or the guy who didn't like him

  • agreed,

i guess the newsletter angle was there because david simon actually worked there, so it's more like a personal stuff he wanted to show long time ago

maybe the worst moment in the series to do that but hey, its is show

  • Wasn't it D'Angelo throwing the rock with Bodie standing next to him?

  • nah other way around

  • I've been wanting to know the answer to that question myself! She doesn't appear in a previous season, so I imagine she's either a genuine newsreader and that was a genuine news clip. Or she's an actress pretending to be a news reader that they've just filmed for that clip. Either way she's hot!

  • Hahaha! She probably appears in a proceeding season, as all the other clips in the season 5 titles seem to suggest.

  • Does anyone know who the sexy female newsreader is towards the end of the opening credits (she's in black)? Or is it an actress?

  • No way I was just going to ask the same question she is fit.

  • A tiny bit repetitive, but the little sequences of Dee, Stringer, Frank etc mugshots gives you that sense of same old same old-ness that's almost the motto of this Season.

  • Definitely my favourite version of this song.

  • It's amazing that the five openings can be similar and yet feel so utterly different from each other. It makes me wish that they'd altered that opening for The Sopranos.

I think my fav is the season one opening though. That bass line gets to me. But the Tom Waits version has great editing. And the season four one is beautiful.

    AH! I can't decide.

  • Very repetitive and boring. Tom Waits version was the best, with DoMaJe's second, except for the crappy guitar solo. Once again, for the kids, this is just my opinion, before you get all juvenile on me.

  • I really dig this version. I like the way it's pretty stripped down and also the fact that Steve Earle appears in the season also makes it pretty cool.

  • when does he apeears?

  • He is Bubbles sponsor

  • i dunno, i really like the Tom Waits version, its alot more guttural but i listened to this one first and for some reason i am just more fond of Steve Earle. i see where you are coming from tho

  • fond of Steve Earle...yeah, i love Steve Earle

  • Loved the song he used in season 2 closing montage.

  • he is the best...you should check out some of his stuff on YouTube, incredible...

  • Tom Waits gravel voice was the worst version in my opinion. I think the The Blind Alabama Boys had the best version.

  • The season 4 intro was the best

  • Can't wait to se season 5. I'm on the 9th episode of season 4...

  • season 4 iz way betta dont lyk dis intro

  • Translation:

Season 4 was a lot better in my opinion. I do not care for this introduction very much. Thank you.

  • season 4s song entrence song was better

  • you cant top tom's version in season 2, and it really went well with the whole...stevadore, polish/greek dock theme....but steve earl is the man....n he was bubbles buddy when he was trying to get clean 1st or second season....this show is incredible

  • Steve Earle = The man

  • you are right about that, my friend...i've been a huge fan for 20 yrs, he just gets better and better...for an old guy! ha! he's 53, 2 years older than me!! God willing, he will be singing and i will be listening when we are both pushing 90....

  • I like this version the best. Especially the "in the hole, in the hole" overlay sound effect.

  • best version

  • no the best in the order is:

    1. season 1

    2. season 2

    3. season 3

    4. season 5

    5. season 4

    those were the best intros.

  • Thanks beast. never seen the show but was lucky enough to see steve earle 2 times this weekend in ca

  • Waylon who? This is Steve Earle. This song was written by Tom Waits.

  • Waylon is Steve Earle's charactor name on the wire....

He plays the guy who used to be a crackhead who talks to bubbles...

  • Damn I never new Waylon sang this song until tonight. Cudos!

  • Walon...

  • is this the last series????? need to wait a few months till it comes out to ireland!

  • is this the last series????? need to wait a few months till it comes out to ireland!

  • Yes, this is the final series ("season" for us North Americans.)

  • I wasn't sure if I was into this version at first but now I love it

  • The best intro song out of all of them.

  • the wire is such a fierce show i love it

  • I like this intro it makes it more ... idk classy and stylish at the same time.

  • Everybody who says The Wire should just stick to the corners and the drug game is missing the point of this show entirely. Their minds are severely limited.

  • They're just stupid. Everything is connected. If they couldn't get that, then don't watch The Wire.

  • jsu cuz a song entrence is good but they didnt post it dont mean u gotto stop wachin it u stupid its jus a song entrence

  • dat guy who put up the spoilers is a fuk boy stop buying the bootlegs

  • wow dog u love talkin shit on da computer its not da serious get a life nigga 4 real.(LOL)

  • "easy listening"????????????

  • Damn you you darn fucking idioit

  • i think you lying a couple things like Randy only in the season for 2 minutes is true but id rather sit through it & figure out myself

  • Anybody have any idea who the hottie TV reporter is at 1:08 right after the slim charles hallway cut?

  • @trinityproj3ct besides the interest in the show of course, her 2 seconds are awesome! Did you found out who she is? Cheers from CT

  • Diffrent ver diffrent don't sure if i like it it's okay but not great poor though it is the last season

  • I didn't like the focus on the docks but didn't realize they were going for a different theme each season and not just a continuation of one storyline. It works better this way since we still get the drug trade stories mixed in with the docks/city hall/schools/media storylines.

  • I think there needs to be one more season with the Hospitals/Emergency Room/HealthCare angle.

  • Nah, there are way too many hospitl shows as it is doing that would totally be copping out.

  • get the fuck outta here.....stupid shit... they bring something new each season, i suppose the docks from season 2 and city hall from season 3 was stupid shit too, I suppose they should just keep it about the drug game an all that.

  • do anyone know what dirt Burrel has on Daniels i know it was said in season one or season three but i cant remember.

  • I think Daniels embezzled money or something. They said he has more money than someone in his position should have.

  • i think you're right, thanx

  • Daniels was DEU Sargeant in the Eastern and was looked at by the local Feds and CID for possible skimming of cash off of drug busts. No suspicions were ever followed up with arrests or convictions. This was first alluded to by Agent Fitzhugh to McNulty when McNulty went to the feds to ask for surveillance equipment.

  • also.....wallace, d'angelo, avon, bey and bodie....no STRINGER in the opener!!

  • There's no Stringer since there were never any crime scene/post-mortem pictures taken of him (that we saw), nor were there any pictures taken of Stringer by himself that got posted to the board. All that aside, this ties with S1 as the best opening credits.

  • do anyone know what dirt Burrel has on Daniels i know it was said in season one or season three but i cant remember.

  • wrong I just saw season 3 and when there is an x on stringer's solo stand alone picture. Now I kno he doesn't have a prison pic(at least I think so). But he definitely had solo pic which I thought they should've used over wee bey, only flaw of this otherwise great intro

  • This is best version of the song.

  • na, season 4 was the best

  • hell yeah

  • yeah i like this one and season 4..but this one sounds a lil better

  • Totally, this is my absolute favorite! And I'm really feeling the media theme for this season, probably my second favorite season to season 4.

  • Is this worse than the season two intro? I didn't care for that one too much. This one is kind of bland.

  • omfg. someone took down all the wire clips. DAMN YOU HBO AND UR COPYRIGHTING! =[

  • I don't like it all that much. Season 4 opening was very good.

  • Oww Me to. it sounds like carcetti is singing this. me no likely.

but i mean the first ep. was garbage, too slow. so maybe the theme will grow on us, yea? I Think Season 3 Was THE BEST SEASON, With BEST THEME SONG XD

  • LOL! Yes, it does sound like Carcetti singing! Just like the season one intro sounds like Andre Royo (Bubbles) singing!

  • the guy who sings the song (steve earle) plays bubble's sponsor waylon on the show

  • That's cool!

  • omar hurt his leg cuz of an ambush

  • That aint slim charles on the that Omar got his gun on thats one of Marlo's people Omar Shot him in the Leg with a Pump Shot Gun and Omar is Vicious in season 5 but he's emotional and unstable he even walk funny I dont know why I guess its from all that robin and killing people living the bad life will do that to you

  • No doubt...Cheese want to wear the crown

  • "From Matters84" ^^

    Hi pal ^^

  • that sounds so good

  • aww man this intro is so sick. hands down the best one yet. that shot of slim charles on the floor makes me so curious because you can't tell if he got shot or not. i saw a clip and thats where omar busts in on him.

  • WHEN YEW WOWLK THROO THE GODDEN!! this is my new favorite intro. s4 aside, its the best one.

  • I like the way the creators have tied characters like Wallace and Frank Sobotka into the credits. Gives the feeling of everything tying together.

  • Wonder who that is lying on the floor in Jessup....

The bell tolls for someone up in the walls...Hmmmm...
