My God. As much as I dislike Michael Cole nowadays, Vince was fuckin' TERRIBLE as an announcer. It seems like all he ever did was this shrill wailing for the entire match (WHAT A MANEUVER! WITH AUTHORITY!) I always hated it when he was calling a show instead of Gorilla.
This was a great match. Bret Hart is one of the greatest workers of all time, along with Steamboat, Savage, Michaels, Undertaker, Austin, Rock, and Flair.
Bret Hart is a top top guy. In the same vein as Jushin Liger. And this match shows that Papa Shango was actually a pretty good worker when they gave him a chance to show his stuff.
i love how bret never pulled any strings with his sharpshooter execution, always synching it in tight and wrenching back furiously. nowadays, everyone is so careful not to hurt eachother but meanwhile wrestling was as physically demanding as ever during Bret's era and he never managed to injure/harm one single one of his opponents during his career. Just a shame others (goldberg) couldn't live up to that same mantra.
Bret was one of the best sellers in the game. He was like Steamboat making his opponent look good and making the crowd sympathize for him when he was getting beat down. One of the best.
There is nothing like watching a Bret Hart match. From the beginning to the middle to the end it's like opening a storybook and reading it through. You can't get the same type of satisfaction from any other match other than Bret's.
I remember that Bret Hart was a fighting champion, defending the belt every week and it actually received mention by Mean Gene at a Survivor Series where he was set to defend against Shawn Michaels. Anyone remember who else Bret defended against in the meantime, though, besides Papa Shango? Didn't Virgil, Repo Man and Santana get title shots too?
I'm pretty sure this was the last Saturday Night's Main Event of this era. Michaels won the IC title at this one. Bret brought realism back to pro wrestling.
@theShowStopper321: it was the final snme, and also davey boy smith's last match for 2 years, and the ultimate warrior's final apperance in the wwf...
Sooo, how come, in an important match, didn't they have Papa Shango do his "voodoo torture" to "incapacitate" Hart??? I guess that was only for the "ham & eggers"! What a letdown.
lol, watching this crowd so jacked up over a 10 minute match involving no blood or stunts, I think to today's matches, where the wrestlers crash into tables and bleed just to get the crowd to acknowledge that they're still awake... Bret's the greatest wrestler of all time. Also, Good work Papa, a.k.a. Godfather!
The pin attempts allows shango look good in the match buy constantly kicking out. it builds up the drama also some tradionalist wrestlers (Hitman) treat wrestling as more of a sport than as just entertainment so try to win every chance you have which is more realistic anyway. thats why todays wrestling looks faker than ever. they always follow the same predictable formula in the matches.
That's because Bret was a great storyteller in the WWF and could tell a great story before, during, and after the match. That's why he is the Excellence of Execution. He is the Best there is, the Best there was, and Best There Ever Will Be.
Its hard to get someone in the sharpshooter, but when you do, boy ...does it really hurt. My top three submissions are the 1- sleeper 2- Bear Hug and 3- The Sharp Shooter.

That chokelift thing by Shango at 1:12 looks fantastic. How did they do that?
joliemadchen 8 months ago
@joliemadchen yeah its a real cool move. Requires lots of upper body strength. If im not wrong Kane frequented the move too, especially before 2001

Why does Bret go for the pin so much? He should do his finisher combo all at once without all the pin attempts in between.
