That is a GMC M220 shop van and is 6 wheel drive. The transfer case is a SPRAG type which means the front axle is automatically engaged and disengaged depending on the road conditions. It's geared so that the rear wheels rotate slower than the front wheels, so if you go off road (or over a car) and the rear wheels spin (slip) 2% faster than the front wheels, the front axle will automatically lock in place for 6 wheel drive power. I have this same truck but with a 7.5L 455 V8 gas engine!
