Spencer wasn't a surprise pick at #26. It was either him or Meachem when the Cowboys traded up. They would have taken him at 22, but decided to trade down with Cleveland for an extra first round pick.

They traded back into the first, because they were afraid that the Patriots were going to take Spencer. So afraid that they traded with their more recently hated rivals, the Eagles.

Again, it wasn't a matter of if he was going in the first round, but when.

How do you know he wasnt first round worthy? Have you seen his stats from the upcoming season already? Wade Phillips is famous for getting production out of that position. Spencer will have plenty of packages set up for him and Ware to get to the QB. He will be taught and used the right way by wade and his staff, trust that. Also trust him putting up very decent numbers this year. And just you wait, he'll be covering the flats in no time.

bobby carpenter is a standing linebacker with excellent blitzing skills. now they have to make him an inside 'backer and adjust his transtion. anthony spencer will make an even tougher transition. they had no gaping holes in the defense. maybe a DT or a safety would have helped right now, and their receivers are over 30. but they chose a situational guy. i never said he saucked or that he will never be good, just not worth the first round pick.

Not to mention the 'boys already have a ton of money tied up in their middle linebackers (Bradie James, Akin Ayodele, and now Kevin Burnett and Bobby Carpenter). What they didn't have was a guy who could rush the passer with Ellis injured. Spencer brings that. There are several players who have made this same transition. Ware and Merriman to name two.

While hard hits are great for highlights, they are not what makes for good play. Good play involves wrapping up and getting your opponent to the turf. Forcing turnovers and making smart decisions.

You're right the speed and knowledge required for an NFL player is much higher than that of a college player, but success in college is a good indication of future success in the NFL.
