@TheUFOeffect: I'm sure buying some extruded polystyrene and carving the foam into whatever sized toroid you would like wouldn't be to hard of a thing to do. however if you do that you would need to wrap it in tape some sort of tape or something to make the outside harder. You could also do buy clay and shape it into a toroid and then let it dry. You can even make your own play dough probably and do it. In actually is is relatively hard to find large toroids for sale. It's difficult to machine.

I don't understand what you mean when you say wind the b coil the other way. there both right hand weaves.

@Spargue; Thd current is reversed in the B coil. If you look at winding the coil by starting with the positive and ending with the negative you would wrape it the other way. Yes, if you look at the coil from above they both look clockwise. But the A current is clockwise and the B current is Counter Clockwise.

If you ran 2 opposing currents there would be inductive interference resulting in many small B-fields. but nothing significant. There is a cut in filming between measuring the bit outside the coil and inside. Even if the coil produced the north pole one one side, there is no reason why it wouldn't produce a north pole on the other side as it's still the same rotational winding about the axis. To do what you claim would throw all of Maxwell's equations, and relativity into dispute

My original point was that Maxwell's equations disagree that a counter current system in this configuration would produce a strong magnetic field. A counter current will cancel out the self inductance of the first coil, bar a small amount due to displacement of the windings, resulting in a very weak field not observable at a significant distance.

The way Rodin explains it, the gap is meant to be between the first and second windings. Though I don't know if it makes a difference to the configuration once its complete except the start/finish points. Haven't made one yet but very keen to. Do you know how important pulse frequency is when the windings are running parallel (equal/opposite directions)?

Question: Do you (or does anyone) know if the coils must be wound together one wind at a time? I wound mine separately in that I wound 9 windings with wire A and then 9 windings with wire B and then there was space left over for the empty non-winding C.

Has anyone tested the difference? If not, I'll have to pick up some more toroid toys!
