Today marks the day of the franchise departure of ATV (Associated Television Limited). The 30th anniversary 1981- 2011! How Television has changed since then! This is when at the time, regionisation of our television network was changing. ITV say it is for the better! If it was for the better, why is it? That the station has underated in the last 30 years. Why? Reality TV!!! How many times has Youtube viewers underated ITV? Millions!! Youtube viewers, give ITV a culture shock this year!

Absolute nonsense , ATV died on 31st Dec 1981 , Central wasn't a patch on ATV , any comparison between them would have Lew Grade turning in his grave.

Central , equally as bad as Carlton , who took over from Thames and made a pigs earhole out of another great franchise area.

ATV was in a class of it's own , and we will probably never see that likes of it again.

Might as well rename ITV Simon Cowell TV

@1ATV That was a perfect if not excellent comment 1ATV!!! Do you know I don't own a TV Licence anymore. Why? Might you say... Because are identity has been destroyed since ATV is a class of its own and was taking away from us. You are right todays TV is absolute rubbish!! Central was a management re-shuffle at ATV as ordered by the IBA because it was still seen as a London managed company and they wanted a proper focus placed on the Midlands hence the name change and the opening of Lenton Lane studios in Nottingham, and different local news bulletins for each part of the Midlands. There is a bit more to it than that, but that is the gist.

Central wasn't ATV. It was a complete separate entity. ATV lost the franchise and it's final day of broadcasting was 31 December 81.

Atrocious TeleVision- Crossroads lol. Great ident. Saw it on the first few episodes of Shine On Harvey Moon recently on the Yesterday channel, then Central took over, good series i thought.

You know, I think here in the US, we're lucky that ABC/NBC/CBS, etc., didn't try something like this. Even now, when local programming seems pushed to the side, we still have each station with their own look.

It's just a movie of a Flash version of it - it's out there with most of the other ITV idents on a TV site. It's not from the original film

This ident has been converted from a Flash video . I know where you got it as I've got loads of them from all different ITV regions.  The man that made these is David Jefferies.

Possibly the most recognised TV indent in the UK even though it's not been used since 1982. Lew Grade actually ripped the idea of an eye in the indent off from Americas CBS record label logo.

no. I think the rot set in when carlton took over from Thames in 1993. Thames was *THE* ITV station!!!!!

Yes I agree! Thames was the best ever franchise to run the ITV network. Never again will this happen. Carlton paid IBA bosses some serious back-handers to get them to drop Thames out of the franchise bid. I'm hoping Thames and LWT make an online channel one day with all the tv classics and adverts from back in the day. The sites would have heavy usage!

Yes that would be brilliant. I reckon the rot set into British TV when they started making the price of broadcast quality equipment available to amateurs. Then we got amateur TV. I no longer posess a TV set I spend more time on You Tube and I love reading and making comments more than anything.
