@HammerFloyd The sound that's like a horn starting at about one minute is part of it, but you're right, they don't play it a lot in this clip. It's sort of a bass noise, a bit like a church organ, but not as clear.
Yeah, it was quite loud, but the surprising thing was the heat from it, even standing at the back of the crowd. It must have been pretty severe up on stage!
This is all the footage I have of it, but I noticed a few other clips in the related videos. I think a YouTube search for pyrophone will turn up some decent stuff.
Thanks for that Chris - I think if I had my time over again, I'd have spent a lot more of the evening watching this performance. I'd highly recommend it to anyone going to the festival. I hope you get a chance to check it out. Thanks for the Favourite too - it's much appreciated.
I don't think anyone has! I thought it was just some elaborate stage for a performance piece when I walked past it earlier. I had no idea it was a musical instrument.
Yeah, it was amazing watching them play the pipes part of it - I wish I'd got footage of that too. The funny thing now is you'll see one and know all about it and your friends will be o_O !!
Yay! Glad you got to see something new and creative! It was just so odd, I had to post it. Of course I'd never heard of them either and was just mesmerised by it!
Yeah, I was wondering how you carry it to band practice on the bus...
I think the basic concept isn't that hard, it looks like just tubes and a blowtorch, with the flame setting up a standing wave in the tube. I imagine tuning it would be tricky though.
LOL! Absolutely! We were all actually looking the other way when the big fireball went up because they had just started fireworks in the opposite direction, so none of us saw it first hand, just felt the heat and the blast. Luckily, like a true YouTuber, I kept the camera rolling...
Oh yes, the city goes into full summer mode. Christmas, New Year's, Sydney Festival for a month, then Australia Day on Jan 26, so it's all happening.
Fireball fail! I thought the world ended there for a second. I have to get to wondering though, how they think to invent a device you play by FIRE? Pyromaniacs of the world - unite and be musical! :)
Oh, you dig it the most... Yeah, what more could you ask for than people standing and applauding as you set things on fire? Appeals to the inner pyromaniac in all of us!
SUCH an odd concept, but judging by the Wiki article there are several related instruments. I guess it's not that fare removed from the steam driven organs in old carousels.
The thing with this was we didn't really realise it was going on. We'd seen the instrument on the way in but didn't know what it was, and we were just on our way home and caught the very end of the performance. We really should have wandered around rather than staying in The Domain all evening!
Very strange, and it was right in the middle of a pedestrian mall in the center of the city that is 'suit central' with all the corporate buildings around it.
Aha, sort of what 'The City' is for London I take it. I guess every metropolis has a version of it. It's hard not to think of Sydney as the capitol of Australia.
Yeah, similar concept but Sydney is much much smaller than London. You can walk the long axis of the CBD in half to three quarters of an hour or so if you're on a mission.
Yeah, it's a common misconception. Brazil must have the same thing with Rio vs Brasilia. Canberra was created as a capital to stop the rivalry between Sydney & Melbourne to be the capital city, and it sits in its own distinct zone (The Australian Capital Territory) the same way Washington D.C. does.
Sydney has roughly half the population of London but is 10 times the area, although most of that is suburbs. The actual city itself is relatively small, I'd guess about the size of Amsterdam.
Yeah, it was way cool. I'd never heard of it either & spent most of the time staring in wonder. I was amazed at the Wiki article that these things actually have a history!
what sound is the pyrophone making? I can only hear the xylophone-type thing they're playing at the bottom

Yes, the video can't give you an idea of the blast of heat from the last explosion!
Ah yes - they're all over for another year...
zebidee55 3 years ago
Interesting blast at the end - looks like it was pretty loud, too!
