  • 3:03 when the song changes so soothing!!!!!

  • Excellent. Just the right amount of text, images, and perfect music. So informative and entertaining.

  • The second song is "In A Sentimental Mood".

  • I love their shoes !!!

  • Let me just say sandra, FANTASTIC! Please be encouraged to do more. I am a huge fan of vintage and would rather dress like this than the styles that are out now. At least the clothes and shoes were made well.

  • The thirties and fourties are my favorite eras for fashion. I collect clothing, shoes and jewelry from this era. I recently bought a feed-sack dress. It's beautiful. People made clothing from feed sacks if they couldn't afford material. The woman I bought it from said she was embarrassed to wear her dresses but now they are very collectable and some are displayed in the Smithsonian.

  • For Minnie and Ethergirl ...

The song you are wondering about is called "Sentimental Mood" or "In a Sentimental Mood" and was popularly performed by Duke Ellington and other jazz superstars of that era. Check out the Miles Davis version. It's my favorite!

    Hope that helps. :0)

  • Hi Sandra,

This video was so great, thankyou so much for posting. Can you please tell me the name of the song that starts around 3:30? I love it every time I hear it, and no one around seems to know the name of it, either.

    Thanks!

  • Maybe "In a Sentimental Mood"?

  • this is the fashion for this fall....

  • many people escaped their problems by reading about the lives of the rich...sound familiar anyone?

  • Great work Sandra, really captures the era. Also captures the beginning of the independent woman through movie stars as mentioned by Harlow7. They were strong women, now you just need strong PR.

  • I agree Keith.

  • Thanks Sandra for this clip, I'm about to explore more of your fabulous work. I love the pre '50's era.

  • Thanks Keith, I appreciate your comments.

  • Very interesting video, I love the song.

  • Thanks so much:-)

  • What a wonderful song !!!!

Can someone tell me its name ?

  • Hi,

The song is a Duke Ellington composition called "Mood Indigo." There have been many versions since and they are all great.

    Keith

  • i wanna live in the 1930's!!!

  • I would only live there AGAIN if I knew then what I know now.

  • I have to ask, and what is that? :)

  • the 30s had Greta Garbo,Joan Crawford,Jean Harlow,Barbara Stanwyck,Marlene Dietrich,Katherine Hepburn ect. why don't we have actresses like them anymore in the present?

  • Elsas first dress was awsome =)=)=)

  • Hey Mimosa. How are you? Yes the dress was awesome inded. In fact the clothes were quite beautiful (hard to believe when most people lived in poverty during the 1930s)

  • I'm fine how are you? Yeah, I was amazed to notice that too. And they are feminine too. I like that.

  • at 1:52 the dresses are absolutely Adorable!

  • This is terrific! Came across your video whislt researching fashion styles with my 12 year old daughter who has chosen to do a large school project on fashion!

I love the 30's era fashion, architecture etc you have covered it very thoroughly! Thankyou

  • Thanks so much! I wish your daughter good luck with her project. Glad you both enjoyed the video!

  • Sandra,

    Great job!

  • Thanks so much!

  • very good vid !! well done

  • potato sack couture? now they come in little polyethylene bags. too bad.

  • gosh sandra....it looks like you COULD have written your own music...

thanks for the part on schiaparelli. she was the deal. nice work.

  • simply maavalous daahling!

  • Thank you so much;)

  • Wonderful! Absolutely great. Every aspect of it fit so well together, a professional work. It's like watching a movie clip from that time, kind of surreal speaking about it from the "future" though.

One thing I'm curious about, maybe you can explain: why is it called a bias cut?

  • Thanks so much for your comments. I am happy that you like it. That is the idea, to put you in a trance! hehe...

Actually bias cut means cutting the fabric on a 45 degree angle instead of straight. This gives the garment a slightly stretchy feel. A lot of clothes in the last few years were created by using the Bias technique. The last time that this happened was during the 1970s and prior to that during the 1930s. It can give a very flattering style to clothes.

  • Well yeah..I caught that in the movie, I meant why is it named that?

  • Well, the streight part of the fabric is called Selvedge and the 45 degree angle is called bias. I don't know why you call it bias on the US over here we call it cut it on the cross.

  • Because in the US cutting on the cross means cutting on the straight grain that runs from selvedge to selvedge. Cutting stright means on the straight grain that runs end to end along the length of the fabric. True bias is at 45 degrees to the straight grain. All these cuts have different characteristics and applications.

  • historybuff33, I am curious, do you design or make clothes?

  • Yes. I also teach the history of Costume

  • That is great historybuff233. I always wondered why people would use miniskirts in times of prosperity and long skirts (which need more fabric and therefore are more expensive to make) when the economy is depressed. Do you have any insight about why this phenomena always happened throughout the 20th century?

  • It's an intriguing phenomenon. My theory has to do with increased social conservatism during difficult economic times.

  • I think your theory makes a lot of sense. Thanks for your comments and for sharing your knowledge.

  • people need to remember that this could happen again

  • Hmm... "credit crunch"

  • Not many had the money to purchase such fashion. One cannot begin to imagine how hard it was without living trough it....Everyone should read or see the film the "Grapes of Wrath" that is only a small sampling of how it was but very true in what it shows.......

  • The video tells you how the economy affected the fashion of that era. Skirts dropped dramatically (ironically this happens in times of hardship) and dresses, trousers and skirts were cut at a 45 degree angle (bias instead of being cut on the selvedge)

Still, people seemed more smartly dressed than they are nowadays... I wasn't alive during that era, but I realise this by looking at footage.

Thanks a lot for the recommendation. I will get the book.

  • Wonderful...Oo my Greta Garbo :-)Im am sincerely intrigued with the vintage fashion, where did you get the pics??

  • Hi XxpinkdymondsxX. I did a lot of research (books, internet, old magazines) a bit of everything. I am glad you enjoyed it. It seems that a lot of people are intrigued by retro fashions, (especially since this century began!)

  • Thank you Sandra,

It is like a seminar of the time. Wonderful that you combine the fashions of clothing, architecture, jewellry and manners!

  • Thanks to you Zuzu for watching and for saying such nice things:)

  • thank you, great work!

  • Thanks to you for watching:)

  • we're having a 1930s night tonight....just checking out the fashion requirements! Thankyou x

  • Hope your 20s night is a lot of fun... Glad you liked the video:)

  • GrouchoBarks, love your name:) Thanks for your comments...

  • This video (which I discovered thanks to ziegfeldgrrl) is so amazingly informative and made with such care, I learnt a staggering amount of interesting facts in just 6 minutes. If only most documentaries on TV were just half as interesting! Since I read you are planning to continue this series, I gladly subscribe to your channel.

  • kspm01, you have made me very happy with your comments. Thanks so much for the encouragement to make more videos like this one. I think it is important to keep those memories from the 20th Century. Fashion was amazing during the 30's despite the situation and with all my videos I have decided to comment on some of the main events of each decade. We must not forget some of the bad things that happened, as well as learn and being inspired by the creativity of each era.

  • So glad to read this. Thanks again for your inspiring and inspired slideshow. Keep up the outstanding work!

  • Yes, ziegfeldgrrl, it was very funny, I loved it. I would definitely be interested to see some of your slideshows, I notice you have a lot of interesting videos. By the way, thanks so much for subscribing. I will do the same... Your videos look really amazing...
