  • Probably the best Ben folds song in my opinion :)

  • This one's my favorite because he usually brings in Jon Cray from Cake, and it's like my two favorite bands playing at the same time!

  • who's the one person that disliked this? I feel extremely bad for them. They clearly don't understand good music.

  • @ejskaer - hang in there.... Another opportunity will come up. Been there..

  • Who disliked this? Seriously... I don't see whats not to like....

  • I was laid off today. It was my first job, took me 2 years to finally get it after school. This is the song I listened to for my last hour of work. Not 25 years there, but it still stung.

  • I hate that this gig was in my backyard and i missed it! come back benny!! check out my version of the song on my channel if anyone has time. Would really appreciate the feedback. cheers

  • Damn flies.

  • Kid in English class: "Do we have to do work today? Cant we all just hug and listen to Ben Folds?"

    Me: "I love you!"

  • This song is so powerfully relevant..

  • Never again will my generation see such talent.

  • This album came out September 11, 2001. This song will always remind me of that day.

  • Ben Folds is my hero and why is the song part 2?

  • @Baam12123 Cigarette from Whatever and Ever Amen is about a man called Fred Jones, and is pretty much Fred Jones Part 1

  • I seriously cry every time I hear this song, It's just too beautiful and conveys such emotion.

  • Wow. Wish i could've been there

  • *sniff *tear

  • this is so beautiful

  • im 15 and have listened to the amazing Ben since i was a child

  • @thecuregirl1 same here im 15 and love his music :)

  • @TheWezmau5 what do you think of The Cure??

  • @TheWezmau5 Ha, I'm also 15. He seems to draw youths in. But fuck I love his music.

  • @nixrox13 Same story, I'm 13, and everybody is listening to crappy music. Ben Folds, Elton John, Arcade Fire.....people need to listen to good music! Ben Folds is awesome!

  • real music sounds amazing live.

    friends this, is real music.

  • I find it a shame this song will never get the recognition it deserves, I thank NPR for exposing me to it. Truly I great ballad for our time.

  • I find it a shame this song will never get the recognition it deserves, I thank NPR for exposing me to it. Truly I great ballad for our time.

  • @dinkibass @skppy1225 is completely right. Ben folds is better than people like soulja boy

  • every time I leave a job I listen to this on the way home

  • @nixrox i agree! hes so good but lady gaga and katy perry are taking over! the only person who knows how to wrie music is the man on the screen with the piano! ben, the best.

  • i love this song

  • Sylvester Stallone on cello at 2:09

  • This song, and ben probably didn't know it at the time, has such a real meaning especially in today's times. Just a brilliant song overall and by far one of the most beautiful arrangements I've ever head by Folds.

  • wow great song... one that actually has meaning but meaningless can be good too

  • This song make me cry so hard, almost as worse as Imagine by Lennon. Thank you Ben Folds, for making true music for the kids of this generation to love.

  • Nathan2all97, The Killers and Ben Folds make Beiber sound shitty!

  • @nixrox13

thank god. there is hope for the future yet

  • one of the few artists today who sounds just as good if not better live then on his album

  • This song is really sad, But beautiful at the same time. Kinda makes me wanna cry :')

  • @demonbarber100 17 years he's worked at destroying our ears, man's here to take him downstairs.

  • @nixrox13 Don't worry. In my experience, most people spend the first 18 years of their life trying to convince everyone else that they're the same, and spend the rest of their life trying to convince everyone else that they are somehow different. Just be glad you have a head start.

  • I use this when I teach Death of a Salesman. Classic Willy.

  • @xian3001 I knew there was something that this reminded me of! lol i just never put it together

  • True story. I had an English teacher named Fred Jones. I had him for my senior English class in the 2009-2010 school year. He told us that he was going to retire after this year. Around February 2010, he fell ill and had to take time off from teaching. Around April, we found out that he was diagnosed with stomach cancer. On May 15, 2010, he passed away. He taught high school English for almost 50 years. The whole school showed up for his funeral. Gets me all choked up. Miss you Dr. Jones.

  • about 0:40 to about 0:45 or 46 you can see him spitting when he talks. haha.

  • @TruBlueRepublicanSue too bad your mother didn't believe in abortion. shame.

  • my brother showed me this song and i always want to cry when i hear it.

  • This was a nice find.

Can't find the university Capella version....

  • It's funny. Whenever I have people in my car and they first hear Ben Folds. Silence, they ask who it is, and then get insanely into his work

  • I beat you all, im freaking 2 years old and I already own the entire ben folds discography.

  • @nixrox13

I am also 14 and I love Ben Folds so much, and when people ask what are some of your favorite bands or artists, I tell them Ben Folds, and other various artists. It blows me away that such a great artist isn't known in this generation! I love his music and I hope more people get into him!

  • i'm recording a solo album of my own original music and when i hear the songs i can't help but to think of Ben Folds. He is such a huge inspiration and the greatest songwriter i've ever listened to.

  • I've heard him sing this song hundreds of times, and it still brings tears to my eyes.

  • ya this is great quality

  • His voice is just so incredibly pure and clear, it makes the song so heat breaking. I love Ben Folds :)

  • The right hand doesn't move in the intro but I was talking about the left hand. The sheet music I have has the left hand moving left to right quite a bit in the intro but in this video Ben's left hand doesn't look to be moving too much. Maybe it is but I just can't tell.

  • wow 0:27 , putin.

  • I love Ben Folds so much it's ridiculous...

  • what a voice... incredible really

  • what are the chords during the verse?

  • I love that face he makes when he sings the higher notes, it's so adoreable xD <3

  • @psychodelicwalrus Haha I know. Every time I watch a live video of him and see that, I know there is goodness within a dark world.

    GO BEN!

  • totally awesome! beyond awesome

  • Absolutely breathtaking...

  • Man, this song came out of nowhere for me. Beautifully tragic.

  • Putin at the helm of the orchestra

  • I applaud this comment :D

  • Looks like he's playing to me.

I love this guy, and this is one of my favourite songs. But all the songs he does with this orchestra are just fantastic.

  • Doesn't look too bad to me really... All of these videos were ripped from the DVD.

  • @yonomow Just compare it to the original.

  • @yonomow

I can play the song on the piano. The first part of the song the right hands sticks to three notes: E,F,G,and A, all right by each other.

     Enlightened?

  • @yonomow If you still care, he's not faking it. It matches up perfectly. Checked it a few times, even checked the keys he's playing to ensure there's no trickery.

  • @yonomow it's totally real. promise. he probably has really big hands(to reach the lower notes easier), but the left hand doesn't move a lot in that short part you can actually see.

  • @yonomow Yeah man Ben Folds is totally faking playing this song that he wrote and I can play. Actually this entire orchestra is definitely orchestra-syncing. Their 50 years of training didn't prepare them for C and G major.

  • @AleksRealSyntek You do realise Chrisbchrist was being sarcastic?

  • Comment removed

  • @yonomow It's just that his technique is nice and relaxed and efficient - looks effortless.

    He's a legend.

  • @yonomow it might be from other instruments? i dont know just a guess?

  • Dude your voice is so unique and a your brillrant songwriter

  • This is one of the most gorgeous songs I have ever heard. I rarely have an emotional response to songs but this one is absolutely stunning.

  • Not only is this an incredible performance, but it's tons of fun to fill in the missing vocal harmony toward the end.

  • I mean, He is just so good.

  • There Is Something special with Ben.

  • this song touches my soul

  • I recommend you listen to this and then look for Shad - Story No One Told and listen to the lyrics. Both my favorite songs about life.

  • In orchestra, we were listening to this song. The conducter asked who has heard of this song.

I was the only one who raised my hand :(

  • What a shame, in my mind this is one of the loveliest songs ever written.

  • double points to you then!

  • you heard about bob dylan yet? lol

  • Are you comparing the two as storytellers? I dunno, but I do know that Dylan sucks live. Haven't seen Ben Folds live, as I'm not a fan, except for his first album.

  • Wish John McCrae came out in this one, although the pure awesomeness of it probably would have made the universe implode.

  • i still weep when i watch this vid. it tears me up every time i hear it ,just a heartfelt gut wrenching testament from a pure musician ...named Ben

  • Pure genius!

  • "alright gang, lets split up and search for clues" - Fred Jones

  • i cant wait to see him on the 19th =)

  • It's sad when a fantastic artist like Ben is shrouded away by other "artists" today.

Give me Ben ANY DAY over that Soulja Boy crap.

  • Ben is God, okay? It's that simple.

  • Amen to that.

  • Yeap thats true....i am 17 and ist really bad that not so much know him

  • @skppy1225 ya no one knows who soulja boy is because jay-z is ten times better than him. ya go hov!

  • @skppy1225 "artist" you speak of must be lady gaga, kings of leon, justin bieber, hannah montana. it makes us americans look like fools.

  • @HoldTheMayo904 I wouldn't be so quick to discard Gaga as frivolous or idiotic.

Ben plays the pop game in some of his works as well. And it's worth pointing out that Ben here is quite mature, after well over a decade of song-writing (and many more decades of life).

  • @Suitecake sorry, but when your putting comparing ANY modern day "artist" such as gaga to Folds its like comparing a elementary diploma to a PhD. I'm sure you take away the flashy wardrobe and synthesizers from her im sure she has the potential of being almost half the artist of a Regina Spektor, nothing close to a Folds and sad to say John Mayer.

  • @HoldTheMayo904

I personally much prefer Spektor to Gaga. I don't think Gaga has as much substance as Spektor or Folds at their height. I'm just saying, she is doing some interesting things. It's very easy to see Gaga as a frivolous lunatic, but if you think of her as the reincarnation of, say, Andy Warhol, you can find some interesting, subtle commentary.

For the record, Folds is my favorite artist, Spektor is in my top five, and Gaga isn't in my top fifty.

  • @Suitecake I feel you, spektor is great. good to clarify things with intelligent people. thumbs up to you.

  • @HoldTheMayo904 & @Suitecake - I would like to applaud both of you for having an intellectual discussion on YouTube, of all places, and coming to an understanding. Thanks for giving me more hope in humanity!

  • @skppy1225 can i like this 5 million times?

  • @skppy1225 You don't wanna superman that ho?

  • @dinkibass I don't even want to know what that means.

  • I've only recently gotten into BF's music, but dang, I keep getting more impressed with his songs. He's for sure good with the orchestra, but I personally like the simplicity of him and his piano better.

  • Definitely see him live... buy your tickets early! I've seen him 4 times now and it's such a blast... he's so funny and humble, and such an amazing musician, and he loves to bring the audience into everything. Really one of a kind.

  • been a fan for years, saw him for the first time in orono maine last night....ive been to 100's of shows but that was the best sounding most entertaining show i have ever been to.....seriously. everyone needs to go at least once.

  • favorite.

i've been fascinated with ben and his music since like, 1997. he's just such an amazing artist. perfection. such heart <3

  • 0:50 = CUTE!

  • 0:51

    Adorable!

  • jesus....its beautiful..i just had to pause it so i could wipe the tears from my face

  • Downright envious...

  • i think this song would be better with ben folds by himself...

  • GODDD I LOVE YOU BEN FOLDS.

  • Beautiful song and video, absolutely heart-breaking though.

  • excelent

  • this is completely heart wrenching

  • This is how i've always heard this song in my head.

Beautiful, one of the most touching songs ever.
