  • I'm sorry to say that this version doesn't get anywhere near where Miles went with (and pushed) his sidemen. All the edges and the excitement are gone. Maybe he would play it similar to this these days, at 85 years of age. Sorry, but that's how I hear it, and I attended Miles shows in the 70s.

  • The fact that so many of these cats played with Miles makes this even more fascinating--right on, Bob Belden, for pulling these cats together. Spanish Key still sounds fresher than anything out there now, in 2011, just fresh and bold and makes you feel damn happy to be alive. Miles rocks forever!

  • As with any tribute, it makes me want to go back and hear the original, which obviously is/was will be much better. First time best time. The actual new elements South Indian vocals and violin can barely be heard.

  • AMAZING MIles

  • Just..wow man.

  • Bob Beldon - I want to thank you for all the fantastic work you've done with the Miles Davis legacy. I have all of the release you've supervised and now this! Something for the lovers of Miles who hunger for something fresh. Wonderful, absolutely wonderful!

  • @bobelden....I think U need to read my comment again and see who I was addressing. ok...enuf about you. LOL

  • @92ninersboy that is NOT the MILES DAVIS, these guys are doing a great job thou. In 2009....just think....where was Miles ? ok....Now you know it was NOT him...neither any members of his last band was there in that video. Again...whoever these guys are...they did a GREAT job.

  • Jack de Johnette never played the beat so stiffly on this tune.

  • @jlim2397 I think the magic elixir in the working bands of the Bitches Brew phase - besides Miles of course - was Airto.

  • @Zappatero But Airto doesn't play on Bitches Brew ;-)

  • @talkingwall "working bands" = check "Isle of Wight" for some A+ Airto.

  • @Zappatero no, the Isle of Wight was a year after Bitches Brew. The working band that recorded Bitches Brew was David Holland, Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, Jack DeJohnette and Chick Corea. Trust me here. I've read at least 1/2 dozen biographies on Miles and his music. Bitches Brew was recorded in Aug 69, the same week of Woodstock. Airto was not in that band until early 1970. Jim Riley (Juma) is the percussionist on Bitches Brew.

  • @talkingwall Airto The earliest evidence I see of Airto in session with Miles is November 19, 1969 but he was not a member of the working band at that time. While I like his contributions I can't agree that he was the magic elixer in the Miles' music of that era - but this is a personal thing isn't it? It was a bit of everyone, McLaughlin's angular chords and leads, Corea's harmonic explorations, Zawinul's compositions and pioneering of electric/electronic sounds, Herbie's funk and so on.

  • @jlim2397 That's certainly true but this is still very cool in my opinion. I think Belden did a great job of assembling musicians who created a fitting homage to Miles while doing something very unusual and different with the music. I have this CD set and I think it's brilliant. Was just listening to it today actually. Great stuff. I like the driving beat too but no, it ain't Jack. Of course BB had both Jack and Lenny White and that beat was driving and fluid at the same time.

  • beautiful album, well done to all the musicians and Bob. this is music at the cutting edge.

  • Geez! Miles looks like he ate too many Twinkies. Damn, why does Roney bother doing this - what? Is he like the Rich Little of trumpet or something? This is such a mere shadow of the original - its not a tribute, its like necrophillia, or something. Miles must be rolling in his grave. Come on, Roney, you can do your own thing.

  • @92ninersboy there are "schools" of trumpet players, i.e., the Roy Eldrige school, the Harry James school, the Dizzy Gillespie school and so on. I see nothing wrong with Roney playing from the Miles Davis school. If I were a trumpet player I'd do the same. I'm a guitar player and I play using an approach like Pat Martino with a little Robert Fripp and Pete Cosey thrown in. The greats stand on the shoulders of giants (that's not my quote but it is absolutely true.

  • This is a very good session. When did this happen?

  • Montreal jazz festival 2009 edition
