mine drops spiders (and sometimes creepers) 22 blocks so i can just punch them once and they die, I also have a little room about 6 blocks away from the spawner, so they will spawn continuously, one night i left my game afk for 2 hours, and I had so many spiders amased that my game ran at 1 fps (I also have an i5 extreme, so it usually runs at about 30 fps or above )

you could use this idea for a mob grinder:

it would also be a good idea to add pistons to the beginning of the trap (before they go up the water shoot) so they wont spawn too much, and at the top before they fall..so you can hold them up top and just flip a switch and let them fall..then follow up with a splash potion of healing

I find that this XP farm has a very crude design. Just a water stream and a spawner. Your sword will lose durability very fast and because the spawner isn't near your base the skeletons won't accumulate. Watch some of Etho's or Avidya's videos to get a better idea on how to do it.

A great thing to do is to get the water current to one block and then mine down that block 23 times on the dot, this will allow the skeletons to fall down the hole and it will leave them half a heart which will able you to one hit them, so your sword doesn't brake.

@Falcor43 i have idea for your grinder....what if you take it and ratheeer than setting glowston you set up a few pistons on the ceiling so lave falls down a small chute and that way you could thin their numbers and light the aerea. just a thought.
