  • Civ IV is the best!

  • One more turn indeed! It's difficult to break away from Civilization once you're in the middle of a game!

  • Oh, to have done this as an interview with Sid Meier, a la the interviews with Romero!

  • Thanks a LOT for Matt Chat, Matt :-) I've discovered it a bit over a week ago and have been watching a few vids a day now... Trying to catch up ;-)

I've played many of the games you are discussing and am discovering some that I haven't played but heard about from others, when I was young(er).

Thanks very much for these little trips to my childhood! How much have I played Civ, heh...

  • Oh how many sleepless nights i have devoted to this game ...

  • Just FYI: I appreciate these videos and always look forward to seeing more. ^^

  • Not the best rts, not even closs.

  • Another trick for non-conquest players interrested in an alpha century win: if another civ lauches their space-craft before you, I recall that if you simply capture their capital city, their program is cancelled and their craft has to come back to earth.

By the way, if you capture the capital of another civ, you risk putting them in a civil war and that civ can split into two different nation/civ if there is an empty "civ-slot" in the game.

  • This is my favorite game of all time. I never even liked the sequels, this one is it for me. I used to have alot of fun playing defensively (going for the Alpha-century win), focussing on population growth and science instead of conquest. I always like to leave all the civs alive and see how the geography of all the civs developped on the map. the two most important wonders in my view is the United Nations (as soon as somebody attacks you, you can end it by forcing peace), and womens' suffrage

  • This was my spouse's & my Christmas present to each other in 1991 (that & our twin sons' first Christmas). I still remember what a treat it was when this came in the mail just before Christmas that year. I played the Amiga version of Civ 1 at the following year's GenCon. We've since played every version of Sid Meier's Civilization (I'm currently spending way too much time with Civ 5), but Civ 2 was probably the best, with the wonder movies & Council video clips.

  • This is the best channel for the game classics! Is "Dungeons and Desktops" distributed in Thailand? Can I get it there?

  • 1MOAR TURN - DAY!

  • I like The old games. You do good reviews.Plz give me the site where I can join the community.I mean adress.

  • i cant get enough of this series. its just such an epicly timeless game.

  • Awesome, I've been wanting to know what the first 3 civ games are like, I've started with 4 and already pre-ordered 5.

  • An awesome game, that has gotten better with each new version. While I think Gal Civ 2: Twilight of the Arnor, is the best 4x game ever, the Civ series still offers a ton of challenge and most importantly replayability!

  • Where can I get this game?

  • Thanks for the video! I have spent so many hours playing " just one more turn" hahaha. I still play civ to this day, and I think it is one of the best games ever

  • I love civilization!

  • Cool! I was a fan of civ II, but it's the first time i see the interface of Civilization I

  • So awesome... this is the game my brother and I grew up on... We even wrote Sid Meier's a letter asking him to make a multilayer version of the game back when we were like 8 and 9 years old

  • Back thenit must of been a icon for other developers

  • I can not tell you enough how happy I am that I found your channel! It kind of fills a gap - my childhood/youth relived!

    Thanks!

  • Thanks, Dilberboy! I'm so happy you like the shows.

  • Cool video man :). That was like traveling back in time.

  • What you need to do is a review of Microprose, the company. Surely the purveyor of classic games from the mid 80's to the late 90's and from 8 bit (C64) to 16 bit (Amiga & ST) to 32 bit (PC), From Pirates to Railroad Tycoon to Civilization to Midwinter and F-117 Stealth Fighter.

  • I like your commentary. It appears very natural... and your clicks made me go play another civ ;) It's a winner. This Sid's game.

  • cool man keep it up

  • i like how you say adue.

  • I'm addicted to Civ series too :))) One more turn, one more turn... :D

  • Simply the best game of all time.

  • I remember this game came packaged with our first computer to ever get on the Internet. I can't remember what brand it was, only being excited because it has a Pentium 1 chip in it. LOL. Anyway, I never actually played this game once even though I had it. Pretty sad.

  • Great vid as always!!

  • A great review on a great game! Mostly growing up with consoles, the original Civ was the first PC game I ever really got into around '93, and it changed everything. The beginning of that game defines epicness, too. It's also so challenging! 5/5.

  • I can definitely see that. It must have been a real eye-opener coming to this game from consoles. I played IV so much I thought my computer was going to burn up. Thanks for watching and commenting!

  • I love this game but I always felt that Colonization had much more depth. I remember playing this on the Amiga and having to swap disks every time you did, well...anything!

It's a shame that the recent Colonization remake (which I reviewed) didn't live up to my high expectations due to my love of the original.

I also prefer the original Civ game to any of the sequels. I liked feeling as though you were entirely on your own as that added to the experience. The sequels had too many aids.

  • Ah, Good' Ol' Civilization ... The "One More Turn" Game Ever, that's how addictive it is :P

By the way, Great Reviews! And a question... Are your books available in Spanish O-o ?

  • Thanks, Bajamamut. As far as I know, there are no plans for a Spanish edition, though things are looking very good for an Italian.

  • The visuals are before my time, but I can't deny it's a classic. Another ambitious game I'm thinking of is System Shock, although a very different genre.

  • Another classic i didn't play. I like how it's turn based and slower-paced with less emphasis on combat so I may try it. I've always like the discovery aspect much more.

How do the sequels compare in this matter?

I really liked the intro but of course if it's Rob Hubbard it makes sense :)

and it's interesting that you think Spore is the most ambitious since Civ... i would think maybe Ultima Online or some other to be more so.

  • Well, I meant in the context of a single-player strategy game and in the sense of the scale and scope of the game, not so much its complexity.

I adored Civ IV. Old time fans seem to prefer Civ III, however. Not many still play the first one.

  • I personally think the first one is the best. (Also, another good video :) 5/5)

  • Really? I thought I was the only one!

Though I do find myself drawn to IV. :P

  • Dwarf Fortress is the first game that is bigger, better, and more ambitious then Civ.

  • I hear a lot about that game. I might have to consider it for a future episode! :)

  • just started playing this again for nostalgic reasons :)

BTW does anyone know how to hire tax collector in "keyboard only" mode?

  • Thanks for watching, Exon00. I'm afraid I don't know the answer to your question, though. Have you looked in the manual?

  • Manual?? Do I look like a sissy? :-D

I agree with you, this is the greatest strategy game ever made.

  • 3:18 i so missed that music intro...

Thank you so much for the memories and review.

I'm trying to get Civ somewhere... don't think i can buy it here in Chile, i'll try tho.

    Again, thank you very much!

  • Hehe, you're welcome, Rosotova. Good luck finding it! I don't know much about Chile, but you might want to try ebay.

  • Thanks for another great review, Matt! I've been having a great time going through all your videos, keep it up!

Did you ever play Master of Orion 2? That was another turn-based game that I spent many many hours with.

  • You're welcome, Richard. No, I haven't had the pleasure of playing Master of Orion 2...Yet!

  • Have you ever played Rise of Nations? It's a good mix between this and Age of Empires, so it's a bit more combat based but it's based in technology-trees and the kind of strategic aspects of the Civ games.

  • I haven't played that one, no, but it does look like a nice game. A good combination of Civ and Age of Empires, maybe?

    Thanks for commenting and subscribing!

  • Also that music at the start, that's from Sanxion on the C64 right? Good times :)

  • Thanks, Henri. You are correct about the music; it is a remix by Trauma (the original is by Rob Hubbard, of course). I think you're the first to realize what it was. :)

  • Ahh, Civilization. I remember when I played it for the first time, in 1993, on my brother's 486.

Great video, I'll also check out your other videos. Subscribed.

  • Great vid!... I'm amazed to see that the soundtrack hasn't changed since the first game! :)

    Cheers!

  • Thanks for watching, tomi. Hey--if it ain't broke, don't fix it, right? :) If only more developers followed that mantra...!

  • Hey Blacklily 8, great video. Civ is one of my favortie games. But I have only been able to play Civ 4. When I was young as I remember me and David used to love playing Warloards for the old Amiga. I think Civ and Warlords have some similarities . Then we moved on to playing Heroes Might and Magic for the PC.

  • Warlords and Heroes of M&M are fantasy-themed, turn-based strategy games, so there is a similarity. However, Civ is less focused on combat than those games tend to be.

  • I don't usually comment on YouTube vids, but I wanted to make sure you know how much I love your Matt Chats. Keep up the good work!

  • Thanks, FlexFlexerson! Comments like yours are fuel on the creative fire!

  • Matt, I own both your books. I look forward to more of these features!

  • Thanks so much! I hope you enjoy the books!

  • Good review :-)

This is my favorite of the series, followed by Civilization 4. Didn't care for 3 too much.

  • I was totally enthralled by Civ 4. Great game, all around. You might want to check out Empire Total War; does a nice job combining RTS and TBS.

  • Thanks for the great comments, guys!

  • I'm really enjoying this series. I love retrogaming - the games of 20 years ago are just as much fun now as they were then, and it feels great to finally beat a game you spent hours on as a kid. Keep up the good work, Matt!

  • I have to agree i have enjoyed this one and will be on the look out for more of the same.

  • Stay tuned, Darthpathfinder! There are many great games left to cover. :)

  • It's the "test of time." Although some great games do tend to get forgotten for no apparent reason.

  • wonderful, looking fwd to more ! thx

  • Thanks!

  • Very Good. Thank you very much for uploading this. :)
